I am at mid risk of complications due to Covid. Obese and BAME. So even with a mask I think I would be so anxious going to the shops. We also have a high death rate in our area. I'm not sure of the infection level.

Will you be returning to the shops? I worry about toilets and sanitary levels too.

@formerbabe

Despite what everyone is saying on here, I predict huge numbers of people will go shopping on Monday. I think it will be crazy
Really? Do you think people are that desperate to go and queue in shops, shuffling awkwardly around making sure they’re 2m away from everyone, and worrying about touching stuff? I genuinely don’t know anyone who is planning on going shopping on Monday. And I buy loads of stuff, and spend far too much money, I just can’t think of much worse than shopping with all these measures in place. I’d rather just buy it online.
CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 11/06/2020 20:57

Yes but only to return some clothes that were delivered by Next, that I have been trying for a week to get picked up by fucking Hermes to return.

I don’t want to go - but I also don’t want these bloody clothes and I don’t want to get charged for them!!

kwest · 11/06/2020 20:57

@TheMurk

I’ve just watched M&S segment on The One Show and...

I think I might be the only one, but...

I’m actually getting really angry about this whole ridiculous over the top nonsense. You’re not allowed to TOUCH THE CLOTHES? What? But in Asda a fat sweaty man can rifle through the bananas to pick the perfect one without so much as a batted eye from the staff? Same man later brushed past me trying to reach something on the shelf I was looking at.

But in M&S any returned clothes are going to be “segregated” And presumably sprayed with chemicals before they’re put back. So the virus lives on clothes and multiplies like gremlins does it? Really, we should all be dead by now, every one of us.

Nuts.

Sick of it.

Agree totally. I have also been to argos in a Sainsburys and I was able to walk through and pick up the Tu clothes. What’s the difference? I actually have no problem with that at all though, although I’m not vulnerable and think that things have to get back to normal soon. This way of existing is unsustainable for people and for the economy.
ITonyah · 11/06/2020 20:58

In answer to the OP, no. Haven't missed any shops apart from my local tack shop which gives me what I need out the back anyway

formerbabe · 11/06/2020 20:59

Yes I do @Drivingdownthe101 mainly because there's nothing else to do. I hope I'm wrong!

Drivingdownthe101 · 11/06/2020 21:01

I guess most people I know are still working (either from home or in their workplace) and homeschooling kids at the same time so that’s probably why I don’t know anyone who will be going shopping!

Asuitablecat · 11/06/2020 21:03

How can kids get shoes if we can't try stuff on?

Woeismethischristmas · 11/06/2020 21:05

No I'm quietly protesting the lack of schooling by refusing to participate in restarting the economy. Alsothe idea of queuing with children makes me twitchy.

ginsparkles · 11/06/2020 21:05

As a person who works in a independent shop, this replies make me sad. If everyone switches to online the independent shops won't survive. I will be supporting local shops once they reopen.

I know. But I have three young children who can’t go to school or nursery because the government has prioritised restarting the economy. Would you want to go and browse shops with queues/social distancing/not being allowed to touch anything etc with three children under 7? I’ll be staying out of shops until either schools and nurseries reopen fully or social distancing is dropped, unfortunately. It’ll be a miserable experience.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/06/2020 21:11

@ginsparkles I will be supporting the shops. I'm looking forward to doing something that doesn't involve walking around the local park for the billionth time.

RunningNinja79 · 11/06/2020 21:12

DD2 has got holes in all her jeans and has grown out of her T-shirts so a quick trip to Primark is on the cards. Though will probably go Tuesday in the hope that every other bugger goes on Monday (I'd hang on, but I'm on leave Mon and Tues so rather go then). I'm not one for browsing round shops in general unless there's something I need.

randomer · 11/06/2020 21:13

I went to Tesco the other day. OK its not high end but nobody here, wandered round, a few nice things, whats the problem?

ginsparkles · 11/06/2020 21:15

@driving I totally understand but if the overwhelming majority stay away then shops won't recover from this.

Drivingdownthe101 · 11/06/2020 21:17

I know. But if people can’t/won’t go, either because they have no money to shop (furloughed or redundant), or because they have their children with them 24/7 due to no schools/childcare and young children can’t be expected to abide by the rules, or because they’ve been petrified by the government/media into staying at home then what can you do?

Cecilia2016 · 11/06/2020 21:17

I’m planning to go end of August for school shoes and anything else will be online. I’m now used to the online shopping and had enough of the queuing at super markets and my favourite department store Debenhams won’t be opening in my city it’s closed permanently.

coronabeer23 · 11/06/2020 21:21

I’m not going Monday as I’ll be working but I plan to do a primark shop at some point next week. I need loads of their “bits”. Cotton wool, hair elastics, bras for DD, trainer socks, kids underwear, duvet cover for kids etc. Obviously they can be bought elsewhere but I like the primark ones as they’re excellent value for money and last well

ginsparkles · 11/06/2020 21:21

@Drivingdownthe101 I know, it's a horrid situation. I guess if we could just support local independents wherever possible, or recommend them to others who may be able to go shopping, then it helps the high street stay alive.

UncomfortableSilence · 11/06/2020 21:23

I went to Next today, noticed it was open and I had something to return from pre lockdown. Was expecting to just do my return and go but there was no queue, hardly anyone inside so ended up having a nice browse.

VioletCharlotte · 11/06/2020 21:24

No, there's nothing really I need right now that I can't buy online. I hate shopping at the best of times.

However I may do a Primark run once the shops have been opened a few weeks and things have settled down, could do with stocking up on vest tops, socks, knickers, hair bands and 90p flip flops!

covetingthepreciousthings · 11/06/2020 21:24

We're quite lucky here that the independent shops have now started providing an online service so we try to still use them even though they are closed, hopefully they'll
continue providing the service even when they open for those who aren't comfortable going shopping yet.

Drivingdownthe101 · 11/06/2020 21:24

Don’t get me wrong •ginsparkles I’d love nothing more than a relaxed, solo mooch round the shops, but in the absence of that being possible for the foreseeable future itll be online shopping for us. I’m usually a massive advocate for buying local and independent. Hopefully others will be in a better position to go shopping though!

Celan · 11/06/2020 21:27

But I won't be going out just to wander round the shops for entertainment

I will. I would also be spending, if I still had a job.

@Woeismethischristmas why would you punish people who are desperately in need of the economy to re-start, just because the government has been crap about schools?

I am a campaigner about schools and the need for children to go back to school - although I only have one child who's still at school, and she's a sixth former. Just because I'm not directly affected doesn't mean I should ignore the awfulness of it. The same is true of the economy.

blueangel1 · 11/06/2020 21:29

Nope. My disability means that endless standing in queues would be bloody painful and it's just not worth it. Where I live the R rate is still quite high and most people don't seem to have much idea of social distancing. I'm still managing to get delivery slots from Tesco and I can get most other stuff I need online. The garden centre and the farm shop a few miles away are quite enough for now.

missingmum · 11/06/2020 21:33

The only shop I'd like to go to is a toy shop for my dd's, I'll take them with me but definitely not on the 15th, probably not even this month as I hate shopping at the best of times. They however have had a really tough 3 months and are desperate to visit a toy shop!
