I guess the science has officially left the building. The threat of 3.5 million job losses in the hospitality sector had swung it.

OP posts:
IcedPurple · 08/06/2020 17:16

*but imo education of 15 million students should come before hospitality sector jobs.

The UK is continually putting children at the bottom of the priority list*

Presumably Spain and Italy too, who have reopened restaurants and bars but will not reopen schools at all until at least Sep? Unlike in Britain where schools have been open for a week?

Delatron · 08/06/2020 17:19

The schools in Italy and Spain close in June for the summer anyway.

In Spain they are having 10 people over for dinner!

IcedPurple · 08/06/2020 17:21

They could still have gone back for a few weeks, as the schools don't close until mid June.

Anyway, schools in England are open so I don't really see the issue here.

itsgettingweird · 08/06/2020 17:22

I would have said 2 weeks ago it was madness.

But you can sit in a group of 6 socially distanced.

You can do this in a field or beach or garden.

Why not in a pub?

As long as it's done correctly. So tables spaced properly and ordering via an app on phone or something, proper wipes in loo and constant cleaning I don't see the difference.

And I'd rather sit in pub garden and support a local business than on a beach some ignorant fuckers have turned into a rubbish tip.

tabulahrasa · 08/06/2020 17:22

Do people actually think reopening will save hospitality jobs?...

Unless they can open fully, it’ll cost jobs...places can’t run with the massive loss of customers, the same overheads and keep the same staff to serve the smaller amount of custom.

Delatron · 08/06/2020 17:23

I’m out schools don’t close until the end of July so that’s a huge difference.

Would it really have made sense to send them back for a week or two. However my Yr 6 will be back for 7 and a half weeks. So worth all the effort and organisation for teachers and schools. Can we not see the difference here?

The only reason they haven’t opened schools is because it would have been for a week at the most.

Delatron · 08/06/2020 17:24

And our schools.

itsgettingweird · 08/06/2020 17:25

Schools are different due to enclosed spaces and social distancing.

But people do realise they haven't actually shut though don't they?

Either that or I've been working for nothing for the past 12 weeks!

Delatron · 08/06/2020 17:25

You don’t see the issue with millions of children missing out on an education for 6 months @IcedPurple?

Schools are only open to a few year groups.

thetoddleratemyhomework · 08/06/2020 17:26

Schools should be back properly full time in September. The government obviously wants them back before but the unions don't agree. France are ahead of us by no more than a month and have opened all outdoor establishments already. Their science minister has also said it was a mistake to close schools and all childcare settings should be open. If the teaching unions were a bit more pragmatic about either distance learning or opening schools now then to be honest kids would be getting a better education

thetoddleratemyhomework · 08/06/2020 17:27

And I am aware that teachers are working and that schools are open for key workers, but it obviously is not the same!!

Delatron · 08/06/2020 17:27

Apparently they are all open now! I’ve no idea why my Yr5 is still at home with me.

IcedPurple · 08/06/2020 17:28

The argument being put forward here is that restaurants should not reopen - even on a partial basis with only outdoor tables - until children have gone back to school. Yet restaurants in most of Spain and Italy did that a few weeks ago, but kids are not back at school. If they'd done what some here are suggesting, they could have sent kids back to school in mid May - the time they started opening restaurants - and they'd have been back for a month before summer holidays.

Anyway, since schools in England are open, I'm not seeing the issue here. I just think many on MN hate the thought of anyone having fun.

MarshaBradyo · 08/06/2020 17:28

Anyway, schools in England are open so I don't really see the issue here.

Obviously not for many students, which is an issue.

IcedPurple · 08/06/2020 17:30

You don’t see the issue with millions of children missing out on an education for 6 months @IcedPurple?

I think it's terrible, just as it is for Spanish and Italian kids.

But as I've said, I see it as a separate issue to the reopening of restaurants and pubs. The OP's post to which I responded made no mention of schools. That's just something other posters have brought up and I see them as being two separate discussions.

Delatron · 08/06/2020 17:32

The schools in England are only open to certain year groups and key worker children . Millions of children are still at home. Plus all the secondary schools are closed, so they don’t count?

Did Italy really open restaurants mid May? I’ll go check that.

IcedPurple · 08/06/2020 17:37

They do, but the relevant place to discuss them would be on one of the zillion or so schools threads here. Take your pick.

Did Italy really open restaurants mid May?

Yes.

I’ll go check that

As you wish.

IncrediblySadToo · 08/06/2020 17:41

The other difference is that in European countries people drink differently. They don't get bladdered and start hugging everyone in sight and singing. Coincidence football staring g back too...tv's in pub gardens... social distancing - no way!!! And on rainy days everyone will move inside.

Nope can't see a problem with this at all 🙇🏻‍♀️

BigChocFrenzy · 08/06/2020 17:43

Why compare to Spain & Italy ?

Why copy worst practice instead of those who did best ?

I'm in Germany, where schools opened pt on 4 May, before even many shops were open,
weeks before restaurants etc were open

Some other countries in Europe also prioritised education

BigChocFrenzy · 08/06/2020 17:45

This shows that children are at the bottom of the priority list, below what suits adults

BigChocFrenzy · 08/06/2020 17:48

Relaxing measures risks increasing R0
So we have to prioritise

Children are less likely to spread infection,
but if adults in pubs and restaurants increase R0, then local authorities / teachers are even less likely to reopen schools

So the education of children would once again be sacrificed for adults

IcedPurple · 08/06/2020 17:49

Why compare to Spain & Italy ?

Because I was replying to your claim that 'Britain was different' when in fact other European countries - and probably several non-European countries too - have opened restaurants and bars before opening schools.

Back to the topic of the OP, I see no reason why restaurants cannot reopen in late June. The OP has yet to tell us why 'the science' says otherwise.

Once again children and their education are bottom of the priority list. Absolutely disgusting.

Bluntness100 · 08/06/2020 18:03

I think a large part of schools not being fully open is due to union opposition. I think if the government had had their way all years would have been back by the end of June.

The unions have kicked up a shocking stink. I think it’s why the govrernment is treading cautiously. Even when they told schools to open some councils and schools just said fuck uou and no.
