My workplace has started making redundancies, with more to follow this week.

Fuck this virus.

OP posts:
Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 07/06/2020 18:24

Expecting that my team will be halved in the next couple of weeks. We lost one in the first wave (75% of all staff temporarily which we are all anticipating will be made permanent now). I survived the first cut but may not survive the second. The delay seems to be that they do not have the funds required for payouts. Which unless they can figure out, means that it may be everyone, obviously.
I think the comparatively halcyon days of furlough are about to bite a lot of people.

whatisforteamum · 07/06/2020 18:25

This is the hardest bit.I work in hospitality so uncertain and dh works in manufacture.Horrible time isn't it?.

Strangerthingshere · 07/06/2020 18:26

Not yet, I am anticipating redundancies considering my industry. I just hope that I am ok, at this point would even take a drop in pay or hours, just anything to keep a regular income.

NewYorkIvy · 07/06/2020 18:27

Two friends in very differing industries made redundant so far. Several others very worried.

Whatnametomorrow10 · 07/06/2020 18:28

I work in a company that haven’t furloughed anyone but have now said they need to make a smaller and more agile as a company to survive - so waiting game now to find out how many and who :(

AnnieCartwright · 07/06/2020 18:30

A close relative works at Rolls Royce. They find out this week I think. After more than twenty years working for them.

WhiteChocTwix · 07/06/2020 18:35

I was temping prior to lockdown so no role to go back to. I'm going to start looking for work again this coming week for all the good it will probably do...Confused

dancinginthemoonlight77 · 07/06/2020 18:36

I work in the design and print industry and I'm redundant!

Mummiepig · 07/06/2020 18:41

I was made redundant middle of April

chuntersalot · 07/06/2020 18:42

I'm in the consultation phase, trying to remain positive but it's not looking good. Company furloughed about 800 people and have managed to bring over 500 back in. I'm still furloughed. Everyone in the company (5,000+) took a pay cut early and now looking to reduce employees by 5%.

AuditAngel · 07/06/2020 18:42

My employer is looking at redundancies from the furloughed pool of staff. I am not furloughed.

HelloMissus · 07/06/2020 19:00

I have a meeting tomorrow with my parent company - I bloody know they’re going to tell me it’s time to make redundancies.
I love my staff.
But I need to survive this.

GreyGardens88 · 07/06/2020 19:03

Well they told me last week they are keeping me on furlough as long as possible but to start looking for other jobs as the company is going down the swanny

AlecTrevelyan006 · 07/06/2020 19:09

my son has already lost his job
my daughter is furloughed but expecting to be laid off
my wife was furloughed, now back at work but not fully confident it's for the long term as company is talking about job losses and redundancies
I have two nieces both furloughed and not positive about their position

Fortunately I am ok in the short/medium term but I know of dozens through my professional network that are facing redundancy.

a friend of mine left work at the beginning of the year to fulfil his ambition of opening up a cafe. It was due to open on 1 April. I know that he is clinging on but is also running out of cash.

Tough times ahead for many, many people.

relievedlady · 07/06/2020 19:09

I work in a small company (two owners)
Our industry means no work nothing coming in so although the small number of staff are on furlough until we can reopen weathering this storm might not be the case Confused

I have never done any other line of work and I'm quite worried that there will be a lot out there like me

It doesn't help that whenever I speak with bosses regarding reopening plans and how it will work they seem quite dillusilnal about the whole thing Blush

They also are being abit ignorant to how I need a plan of sorts due to child care situation etc.

I've put forward a couple of good ideas but they've been brushed off so far so we will see

Mozartinmyfanjo · 07/06/2020 19:14

Close to 100 in my place over the past 2 weeks. There was a mention of more to come, as well as wider pay cuts come Autumn. I am fine for now but job market is completely dead in my industry, so those made redundant will struggle. The company is going through a massive restructure in order to survive, a number of our long time suppliers are going to lose our business and jobs as a result. It is horrible.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 07/06/2020 19:16

anecdotally I've heard of several firms that were quite confident at the beginning of lockdown that it would be a short-lived blip but are now resigned to either closing down for good or only just about surviving through a massive cull of staff and overheads.

OfUselessBooks · 07/06/2020 19:22

I'm expecting it this week for some or all of my team, possibly including me. I have no idea really, this waiting is stressful and horrible, I can't eat or sleep. Praying I'll survive but I have no confidence. Things would be tight but we'd be ok for a while. Its finding a new job worries me.

honeysuckleblossom · 07/06/2020 19:24

My heart goes out to you all.

Think I'll be OK to November time, but I'm alone and no idea how I'll survive if I lose my job.

Wishing you all the very best of luck in finding new opportunities soon.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/06/2020 19:24

Not yet. I had a letter from work saying that they are hoping to have everyone back in by the time furlough ends in October so no redundancies but it will depend on how business goes when shops open again (we manufacture for retailers).

Wecandothis99 · 07/06/2020 19:28

I have been. I was only only a temporary contract but still, it ended 6 months early.

onedayallthiswillbeyours · 07/06/2020 20:26

DH is in "consultation", they are a small team and have been told 1 of them will be made redundant at the end of the process and it will be pay cuts for the survivors. So stressful not knowing - we seem to swing from optimism to pessimism on an hourly basis. There are NO jobs around in his specialism at the moment so it is a really really bad time to be looking. The hospitality arm of the business has also started redundancy consultations with a view to losing 50% of their staff.

Winnipegdreamer · 07/06/2020 20:30

I find out next week if I’ll be made redundant. I feel sick to my stomach!

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 07/06/2020 20:36

DSis works for BA, she’s waiting to hear (even if she doesn’t lose her job she’s likely to be on much less money). Very worried about her.

I’m OK - key worker, currently working at home but have seldom been busier. DH has been very part time since DD was born, he may be made redundant but we can weather that.

rozzyraspberry · 07/06/2020 20:40

What reasons are companies giving for doing redundancies now rather than using furlough?
