My workplace has started making redundancies, with more to follow this week.

Fuck this virus.

DH has. Wasn't even furloughed. It's not much of a huge surprise but really bad timing. He is keen to retrain as a teacher though (surprising given all the hate they're getting these days) but he doesn't have a degree so I'm not sure whether it will be possible. I'm on mat leave and sadly think there is a good chance I may have to go back early and on more hours than I had hoped for.

@OfUselessBooks -
So sorry - it was a punch in the gut. I loved my job, team and the cause - it has been a horrible time. I wish you the very best and sorry I can’t be more positive. I am having a very sad afternoon right now and actually I needed it. I have been looking around but today finding job interviews and chatting time recruiters exhausting after a few weeks of it. I have seen a few more roles coming online in the last few weeks so there May be a glimmer of hope.

I was made redundant early on. I won't lie I was devastated.

vulvachips · 11/06/2020 16:33

When it comes down to it you’re just a number to most employers

Personally I think this is a really important message. For most companies particularly larger ones you really are just a number.
It doesn't mean that you shouldn't "work hard" or aim to be good at your job but don't be afraid of or feel guilty about looking for & taking other opportunities. Take up CPD offered if relevant, think about things that will look good on your CV, don't slog your guts out repeatedly for little reward.

Waiting to hear.. I'm pretty low down the company hierarchy after returning from Mat leave last summer and taking a demotion. I work in hospitality, doing a sort of job share with my fantastic colleague. I can imagine that they're looking to keep just one of us.

NeverTwerkNaked · 11/06/2020 17:21

My heart goes out to everyone. It is really hard to read these posts. I don't know many who have been made redundant yet but I know many who are worried.

I am safe for the next few years I think but after that it depends how deep a depression this is or whether there is a bounce back. Some previous epidemics saw a sharp bounce back afterwards so let's hope this is the same.

Also, we are about to recruit for several new posts, as we are so busy (non Covid related) so there are glimmers of hope out there.

I was made redundant last month. I'm a single parent and DD is in year 6 but her school are only having them in school for 1 day between now and Summer hols starting!
God only knows how Ill be able to find another job now

dancinginthemoonlight77 · 11/06/2020 17:49

@SudokuBook I never actually thought of it like that.

JoeExoticsTiger · 11/06/2020 18:06

Haven’t lost my job, but it’s not looking great. Both myself and my DH are in aviation, his job formerly at risk and mine is looking likely to be the same way...

I’m furloughed and managed to get a full time job at a supermarket as a back up for if I lose my job and to keep myself busy. But I’m so worried, feel like everything I’ve built up during my career is in tatters. Worried about how we’re going to pay the mortgage, bills and get through this... we have some savings but not much at all really. 😞

Thebearsbunny · 11/06/2020 19:37

My DP was made redundant recently after being furloughed. It’s devastating. I have a low paid job that is hopefully secure. We are both mid fifties and just a few months ago after years of being careful with money have paid off our mortgage (I know we are lucky in that regard) and have finally reached a time when we have some disposable income so can enjoy a couple of holidays a year, meals out etc but more importantly could afford to put a substantial amount aside each month to fund an early retirement. All wiped out by a five minute phone call.

Deblou43 · 11/06/2020 21:31

This breaks my heart I have been made redundant twice so know how it feels .. I angry and upset so many people are losing jobs ... screw you covid

Babyroobs · 11/06/2020 23:15

Rubyslippers- I am charity sector too and love my job. Our funding has just been extended by another year which I wasn't expecting but after that who knows. The charity which we are funded by is apparently losing between 35-50% of it's ( huge) fundraising revenue. It is a charity which already continually restructures and makes teams of people redundant on a whim. Worrying times.

Fruitbatdancer · 12/06/2020 00:15

I was put at risk today, 3 jobs going to 1. Will know in 45 days (consultation erupt) fucking sucks. My place announced over 1000+ redundancies today. Probably be in the news tomorrow.

whatisforteamum · 12/06/2020 09:22

One of us got good news.Just before the lockdown dh was told there was no work. This then got changed to furlough.I thought it was inevitable the company would close and he would be redundant like last yesr. Then he got an email back next week!.Just DS and myself now to find out our fates.I'm in hospitality so really need information. So sorry to all of you who have lost their jobs.

WhiteChocTwix · 12/06/2020 19:26

What a difference a day makes... Got a Skype interview end of next week for a job. Decent pay and perm! Only thing is they say it's not a sales role... But it sounds like a sales role... 🤔

whatisforteamum · 13/06/2020 08:32

Whitechoctwix .Good luck with it.😊

dalrympy · 13/06/2020 09:20

@MrsSimples

I was made redundant from the leisure industry ( thank god actually as the boss was a nightmare bully). New job is in Property Management, which I guess has to carry on...

The money will be tight but it's better than nothing.

letsdolunch321 · 03/08/2020 11:30

Yes been made redundant, applied for other jobs not been offered an interview as yet. Not having a great time but ho hum it seems to be the new normal 🙄

Latenightreader · 03/08/2020 11:51

Had the letter of doom 'consultation' last week. I feel utterly defeated. In many ways I wanted to leave because I have been unhappy since returning from mat leave (horrible atmosphere), but I wanted to leave on my own terms, with a job to go to, when I had finished the project. My sector has been devastated. I feel I should fight and suggest options, but I also feel that they want me gone. I just feel crushed.
