My workplace has started making redundancies, with more to follow this week.

Fuck this virus.

I’m a freelancer and lost all my clients very early on. They’re all furloughed and likely to be made redundant. There are no jobs around... yay.

Runwayqueen · 09/06/2020 13:26

@Rufus27 I work for the airport, but have so many fond memories and a lot of respect for the amazing crews at that airline 💜 I wish they were back in the skies. This is certainly the biggest crisis that the aviation sector has ever faced, and like so many other sectors there just doesn't seem to be the support from our government. I hope your Dh has some success very soon 🤞

FluffyKittensinabasket · 09/06/2020 13:36

Unemployment is going to hit 10% + apparently. There are very few jobs out there now apart from care work.

Already talk of a civil service external recruitment freeze. Lasted two years last time.

LegoPeople · 09/06/2020 14:32

i'm very anxious, trying to pretend to be cheerful at work. heart skips a beat whenever HR calls / emails. i wont be able to find another job for a long time coming from a niche sector.

before this i was trying to move downwards into a more generalist, less stressful and lower paid support role to accommodate family life, and it was impossible, let alone in the coming months as there are even fewer or no jobs around. Sad

Pinkiii · 09/06/2020 14:57

I’m also in the aviation sector and got furloughed pretty early on and expecting redundancy call any day now. Not looking good for our company.

Worried as I really need this job as its flexible for my little one.

dalrympy · 09/06/2020 16:16

I actually got a new job today. It's about 20% less pay but it's a job and I'll take it.

So there are things out there.

ComeOnEileen11 · 09/06/2020 16:39

DH is in aviation and has just survived round 1 of redundancy but whether the company survives the next few months to a year is another matter.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/06/2020 16:54

@AlecTrevelyan006

Rolls Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin have announced 100s of job cuts

Mulberry is closing it’s plant in Somerset leading to 100 job losses

Birmingham hippodrome just announced that half of their 130 staff are likely to be made redundant - currently closed till November and Xmas panto now in doubt

....

Few sectors are going to escape and every job loss has a knock-on effect. Whatever the govt does now the situation is likely to be As bad as the 1980s but if we don’t act quickly it could end up more like the 1930s.

Mulberry. Is "only" closing 1 plant in Somerset they have 2 factories and a warehouse in the county. It's 1 factory having it's production stopped. The job losses will total around 200-250.

Wow started job hunting today. Unless you're an accountant there really doesn't seem to be much out there 😳 coupled with the weather that's made me really depressed!

dancinginthemoonlight77 · 10/06/2020 20:38

@WhiteChocTwix I've been job hunting too and I've applied for 3 jobs that I class as "low skilled" I.e I don't need experience for and have been turned down for all of them so far. I am really depressed today too - sending love

WhiteChocTwix · 10/06/2020 21:08

@dancinginthemoonlight77 sending love to you too! Sorry to hear you've had rejections, that's really disappointing. What kind of work are you in? I have an experienced sales support CV but clearly firms don't have many sales to need supporting currently! Confused maybe job hunting won't seem so bad once the weather improves again?

dancinginthemoonlight77 · 10/06/2020 22:33

@WhiteChocTwix I'm in the print and design industry. Most our jobs involve advertising and marketing of businesses including schools, festivals, events and universities etc. As you can imagine work is just not there. Just feel really disheartened.

letsdolunch321 · 10/06/2020 23:22

Been furloughed, company has decided to get rid of 25% of staff, waiting to hear if I am safe or not 😟

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 11/06/2020 07:38

Found out yesterday I’m high risk. I had to reapply for my job and I massively failed the interview. I mean like massively, I’m so embarrassed. I feel like they tore apart my answers, complained I didn’t give enough detail to my answers. No positives. I’m heartbroken, this is a job I do every day (normally) and do extremely well. I’ve not worked for 3 months due to furlough, my confidence is shattered. I have no idea how I will recover from this even if I am kept on. I’ve been thinking about suicide way too much lately, I just want to wake up and things be back to normal Sad

WhiteChocTwix · 11/06/2020 10:28

I hope everyone waiting to hear gets a better outcome than they are expecting. My recruiter contacts tell me they expect things to pick up in July (I can't see how or why July is going to be any different but maybe they know something I don't...)
@Sorryusernamealreadyexists that sounds like a hugely stressful situation you were put under. Please look after yourself x

MrsSimples · 11/06/2020 15:31

@Sorryusernamealreadyexists that's really tough and it sounds horrible of your employer to do that. how you did in the interview is by no means what you are capable of. Lots of people are in the same situation so i hope it works out. If not, maybe it's an opportunity to train/ do something else or (hopefully, eventually) move to an employer who appreciates your efforts.

MrsSimples · 11/06/2020 15:32

@dalrympy what line of work / sector is that?

rubyslippers · 11/06/2020 15:34

Yes. Redundant (charity sector)
Devastated by it all

SudokuBook · 11/06/2020 15:36

Me

SudokuBook · 11/06/2020 15:41

So sorry @Sorryusernamealreadyexists x personally I think competitive interviews as part of a redundancy process are shit and really risk being unfair.

I know what you mean about getting past it if you’re kept on. I think that often staying on after redundancy is worse as not only has everything changed but you’re supposed to be grateful you still have a job even though it’s shit. I have mental health issues too but please don’t do anything to harm yourself for the sake of a job - it’s never going to be worth it xx

SudokuBook · 11/06/2020 15:44

I've been job hunting too and I've applied for 3 jobs that I class as "low skilled" I.e I don't need experience for and have been turned down for all of them so far.

That’ll be why though, they’ll know you’ll be off as soon as something better comes along x

I haven’t worked for 4 weeks now, need to get my finger out my arse and finalise my CV

OfUselessBooks · 11/06/2020 16:03

Sorry @rubyslippers...your message caught my eye as I have also been made redundant and devastated is the worst I would use. I love my job, my team, my hours, and will never get one like this again. Hope you are ok, it is such a heartbreaking time. I felt so secure and happy and now this devastation. We will have to sell our house eventually if nothing comes up.

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 11/06/2020 16:05

Sorry, just read that back and didn’t mean for it to sound dramatic. We live in a very rural area, so very few jobs and even less that fit around the children. I’m unlikely to even be able to start looking until September.

SudokuBook · 11/06/2020 16:10

It is devastating...I was convinced my job was secure. When it comes down to it you’re just a number to most employers

rubyslippers · 11/06/2020 16:24

So sorry - it was a punch in the gut. I loved my job, team and the cause - it has been a horrible time. I wish you the very best - I am having a very sad afternoon right now and actually I needed it.
