My workplace has started making redundancies, with more to follow this week.

Fuck this virus.

@Cantthinkofanother were they topping up your furlough? With my staff its working out a real mixture with holiday pay at 100% furlough at 80% then a redundancy payout in the last month.

Cantthinkofanother · 08/06/2020 00:49

@justkeepmovingon - no they’re not topping up, I’m just getting the 80%.
There are only 3 of us left on furlough now, the other staff have either returned to work, or have been made redundant.
I, along with my job-share partner haven’t heard a thing from my employer, not even in response to emails that I have sent regarding annual leave pay.
I’m assuming the worst though.

SionnachGlic · 08/06/2020 00:54

@GoodMythical

Would they not need you even more now to clean equipment/surfaces frequently yo prevent transmission of virus once they reopen? I would only be going back there if I could see the place wss being scrubbed high & low..

Sorry for all those posting about job losses & fearful, I hope the tide will turn for you & things will improve.

Blankscreen · 08/06/2020 01:06

My dh has been made redundant and has 3 months gardening leave.
He has found another job which starts on 1st August.

I wasn't at all optimistic of his chances but was surprised at the level of recruitment going on and he got 2 offers.

Not bragging but just to say there might be some hope.

Oldsu · 08/06/2020 01:06

I have kept my job, I have just been promoted and they were in the process of recruiting for my old position before lockdown , they are not doing that now so I will have to take on extra work not sure how that will work out but we shall see

SionnachGlic · 08/06/2020 05:07

@Oldsu

Congrats on your promotion. Beware you are not taken advantage of...it was a feature in my job during last recession...my employer was piling on more & more work with ' you are lucky we didn't have to let you go' & we need to 'share the pain' which involved pay cuts, work longer & harder.

UK’s largest brickmaker, Ibstock, says it has entered in to consultation with 15% (375 people) of its workforce due to low demand.

Hangingwithmygnomies · 08/06/2020 19:37

We've had multiple at my company and due to it being travel, I fear it's only the beginning

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 08/06/2020 20:00

I know of 3 people who’ve already been made redundant, all very different industries. Two of them were the breadwinner and have children, not that that makes any difference to companies but it does impact more lives.

transformandriseup · 08/06/2020 20:08

I was still in my probationary period and doing well with my job but my employers decided they couldn't afford to keep me sadly. I was and still am completely gutted.

Deblou43 · 08/06/2020 20:32

@blankscreen what does your DH do ?

Runwayqueen · 08/06/2020 20:50

Not yet, aviation sector so expecting it sadly

dementedma · 08/06/2020 20:57

Dd works in hospitality - but she is now the PA to the owner, after working in the restaurant initially. Restaurant now mothballed until next year (and it is VERY high end). All staff made redundant, except DD.

Her partner runs his own business. He thinks it will go bust, after years of building it up after taking over from his father. It’s just horrible.

DS is a young musician. All gigs, performances and shows cancelled until God knows when. He gets no financial help and has lost the year’s income.

DD1 runs a charity. All work and fundraising has dried up. She is on UC for now.

My kids lives have been completely fucked

Skintalways · 08/06/2020 21:05

Dp waiting to hear, it's looking likely, he is main earner and we have just bought new house. Feel sick.

Rufus27 · 08/06/2020 21:14

Yes, DP lost his job when the company he works for went into administration . He’d worked for them for 25 years and is the main wage earner (I work pt as we have two toddlers with additional needs) . He’s not been furloughed. No hope of new employment in his profession (aviation) and despite applying for over 40 jobs, not a single response, let alone an interview. We’re living on savings and benefits, but know we can’t afford the mortgage for many months. It’s tough.

Rufus27 · 08/06/2020 21:14

*more months

Rufus27 · 08/06/2020 21:17

Curlyshabtree Possibly the same company? Sad

CakeandCoffeeQueen · 08/06/2020 21:18

DH has just been let go, only been in his role for a year so could just do it.

It’s my birthday soon and I feel like there isn’t anything to celebrate.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/06/2020 08:56

Rolls Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin have announced 100s of job cuts

Mulberry is closing it’s plant in Somerset leading to 100 job losses

Birmingham hippodrome just announced that half of their 130 staff are likely to be made redundant - currently closed till November and Xmas panto now in doubt

....

Few sectors are going to escape and every job loss has a knock-on effect. Whatever the govt does now the situation is likely to be As bad as the 1980s but if we don’t act quickly it could end up more like the 1930s.

notimagain · 09/06/2020 09:05

@Runwayqueen

Same here, so good luck..

I think we're witnessing the relative calm before the storm..Lots of big companies in the UK, not just in aviation, went into the statutory redundancy consultation process with it's 45 day time limit at about the same time - late April/early May.

The clock on that process will be running out shortly so I have a horrible feeling the news could start to get really ugly over the next few weeks..

dalrympy · 09/06/2020 09:07

Yes. Furloughed and been given notice of redundancy.

MsAwesomeDragon · 09/06/2020 09:12

My sister was made redundant before the furlough scheme was announced. She was working in a hotel that was already struggling. That hotel won't be reopening, they knew that before they were told to close.

Dsis had already had a period of unemployment, for quite a few years, as there already weren't enough jobs in an area that relies heavily on tourism. She doesn't think she'll find another job anytime soon as there are so many people out of work and so few jobs in the area. She would do anything, but there just isn't anything available.

Runwayqueen · 09/06/2020 09:29

@notimagain Thank you, good luck to you too.

We sadly lost a major regional UK airline just as corona was taking affect. Our management have been amazing at getting other airlines in and interested but obviously it's all changed a bit now, we wait now to see who wants to come back to us. I'm really worried for all my colleagues and myself, but I do truly believe our management team have tried, I can't be angry at what's out of their control I guess.

Rufus27 · 09/06/2020 09:36

Runwayqueen Suspect you worked for the same company as my DP. He was a pilot, so no hope of getting another job flying at present. He’s applied for 40 odd jobs, but nothing Sad

OfUselessBooks · 09/06/2020 09:57

We are beginning consultations. I can't sleep or eat, it's just horrible. Good luck to everyone going through the same.
