Why aren't there angry posts about Tim Matthews admitting he made up Dominic Cummings sighting?

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8372911/Boris-puts-Dominic-Cummings-chance-one-witness-admits-sighting-aide.html

Tim Matthews has admitted he made up a sighting of Dominic Cummings at Barnard Castle for a joke. It wasn't a very funny joke. I haven't heard anyone laughing about and why has it taken until now to admit it was a lie?

OP posts:
Lovely1a2b3c · 31/05/2020 13:57

I would actually rather that Cumming's Durham trip had not be uncovered though because then we wouldn't have the 'Cumming's Effect' (i.e. 'fuck-it-all I'm above the rules and will do as I please') and there would be fewer deaths!

Nonnymum · 31/05/2020 14:00

I was just looking to see if there was anyone willing to modify any of their previous posts about this!
I have no reason to. I didn't believe thw extra sighting at the time anyway and it was never the main issue. Mr Cummings condemmed himself by his Rose Garden statement. I haven't seen anything that changes any of that.

Anniegetyourgun · 31/05/2020 14:01

I have to say that if there is only one person in the whole country who can block a two year Brexit extension - and that's not even the Prime Minister, apparently - then you have to wonder why that is. Get rid of one SpAD and the whole project comes tumbling down? Really?

Coyoacan · 31/05/2020 14:07

Surely the people who make policy and the rules for the country should be the first to uphold them, especially in these troubling times.

It's sad that the Tories, who used to be quite a conservative bunch, believe it is ok to have leaders who are the first to break the rules they made and then lie about it.

How can you follow hard and life-changing rules when the people making them don't even believe in them? We always knew that there would be an antisocial element that wouldn't follow the rules, but...

JudyCoolibar · 31/05/2020 14:11

I am inclined to believe DC's version of events

You believe that he drove 60 miles just to check his eyesight, OP? Really?

Alsohuman · 31/05/2020 14:12

That’s such a good point @Anniegetyourgun. No Cummings = no Brexit? Who’d have thought it?

JudyCoolibar · 31/05/2020 14:13

What the Mail has said would be defamatory if untrue. I don't see the chemistry teacher saying he's going to sue

No, it wouldn't be defamatory, because at the relevant time people were entitled to travel to collect student children and move house. So why would he sue? This is a seriously pathetic attempt to smear the chemistry teacher, and for what? Cummings has fully admitted that when he reported was true.

Nonnymum · 31/05/2020 14:16

vdbfamily
There is absolutely no evidence that the child has special needs that was a twitter post that was deleted because it was found to be untrue. I find it very insulting and upsetting that someone could use a child in this way. Also even if he does have special needs. Many parents are having to cope in isolation with very challenging children with special needs. In accommodation much smaller and less luxurious than the Cummings home in London
Also yes he did put people at risk. He traveled across the country carrying the virus to Durham at a time when there were very few cases there. There is a reason why people were told to stay put if they have symptons. He even went back into work after rushing home to see his sick wide. Potentially spreading the virus even further he said she didnt have covid symptoms at that time she was just ill. But in her own article she said she suspected it was Covid. Also in his own words he said he did a 60 mile round trip with his child in the car to test his eyesight. Then when in Barnard Castle he got out of the car. He said he felt sick at that time so wasnt fully recovered so then again possibly spreading the virus.

JudyCoolibar · 31/05/2020 14:19

The police have said his trip north was legal in the circumstances.

No, they said it broke the rules.

His trip to the ' outskirts of Barnard Castle' were at a time when you could drive for exercise but your period of exercise should be longer than the car drive

But he admitted he didn't drive for exercise. His excuse was the ridiculous eyesight checking one.

he warned of danger of pandemics and only linked to the Coronavirus bit so not strict true but not completely fabricated

He specifically claimed to have predicted coronavirus, so yes, it is fabricated. Even if it was only partly fabricated, are you seriously maintaining that makes it absolutely fine, @vdbfamily?

Mumratheevergiving · 31/05/2020 14:23

PerkingFaintly - Ministers falling over themselves to retrospectively pretend the lockdown rules match Cummings' behaviour is quite another...As even Allison Pearson put it, "the Government has moved from Save Lives to Save Face.”
It's madness for a government to throw itself on a sword like this for a SPAD.

Absolutely agree the Spud SPAD must go, he is the story and is damaging the country by stringing this out.

JudyCoolibar · 31/05/2020 14:25

The trip north, all we know is his wife had felt sick and Boris had just tested positive. Wife had felt better and there is no evidence she or child ever had Covid in all this( child tested negative in hospital) So whilst there was a high likelihood DC would have DC, we have no evidence to say he was symptomatic when he drove north

Rich use of hindsight there, @vdbfamily. At that time he knew his wife was ill, he did not know that his wife didn't have Covid, and he knew that someone he had been working with regularly had it. Yet he thought it appropriate to get in a car in clear contravention of the rules and drive 260 miles, thereby potentially putting several people at risk. Even if the story about not having to stop is true, again he could not have known before he started that that would be the case - in fact, with a sick wife and a 4 year old, it would be highly unlikely. And he absolutely had no way of guaranteeing he would not have a breakdown or an accident.

Face it, he travelled knowing that there was at least a possibility that he would be putting other people at risk. For someone in his position, that was inexcusable, no matter how desperately you try to find excuses.

FliesandPies · 31/05/2020 14:26

The police have said his trip north was legal in the circumstances

No, they said it broke the rules

They said the trip to Durham did not constitute a offence under the regulations. But actually, by his Cummings own statement, it clearly did.

Walkaround · 31/05/2020 14:27

The pro-Brexit people constantly linking this to Brexit would be better advised to shut the fu about Brexit, or they risk people linking the Government’s idiotic, self-harming approach to public health messages to the way it is negotiating the Brexit deal. This is a public health issue. It’s very foolish to link stupid intransigence to Brexit - unless you are an anti-Brexiter masquerading as a pro-Brexiter, of course.

Nonnymum · 31/05/2020 14:37

this is all about Brexit
It's not not everything is a about Brexit
Peter Bone is probably even more pro Brexit than Cummings and he thinks he should go. As do many Boris and Brexit supporting members of the public.
It's about fairness and the rules applying to everyone.

PerkingFaintly · 31/05/2020 14:38

Dominic Cummings is not a Tory.

Indeed, Tanith, and I am going to predict here and now that we'll be hearing this line a lot in some near-distant future, when the Tory government wishes to disown its current actions.

The fact that this anarchist is bouncing round No 10 at the behest of a Tory Prime Minister, and protected by other ministers, who are all prepared to destroy their own reputations rather than evict him, will metamorphose into a leftist plot.

The right-wingers currently all over the internet trying to defend or distract from Cummings' behaviour, will turn on a sixpence and suddenly be holding him up as an example of appalling behaviour... by The Left.

You read it here first. The Right have form on this.

vdbfamily · 31/05/2020 14:56

Nonnymum .... at no point has DC said his child has SEN and I will repeat for a 3rd time, I was chastising a relative online for stating that the child had SEN when it was just an unsubstantiated rumour, and he replied that he works in London with a family friend who has confirmed the rumour.
All those saying that if they both had got poorly they should have just bought in childcare, do you seriously think there are nannies queuing up to visit homes with Covid. I just read some nanny agency websites, all stating that nannies should not go to work if anyone in the house has any symptoms. If by some miracle you could find care, they would be in full PPE protection which would terrify most 4 year olds.

FliesandPies · 31/05/2020 15:24

All those saying that if they both had got poorly they should have just bought in childcare, do you seriously think there are nannies queuing up to visit homes with Covid

At the time of his trip to Durham, by his own admission, Cummings did not need childcare. By his own admission they did not need childcare all the time there were at Durham. Therefore they broke the rules.

He said thought it might become necessary if both he and his wife were hospitalised, at the same time with covid. However, he had no reason to think this would be the case, unless they have underlying conditions which he has chosen not to reveal.

Also, as has been pointed out numerous times, if they were both hospitalised it would have been acceptable under the rules for wonder-neice to travel to London and care for their Son in own home, in comfortable familiar surroundings instead of lugging him on a long tedious journey with sick parents to stay in a concrete outhouse.

Alsohuman · 31/05/2020 16:13

It’s already started. My MP said this in his response to my email.

Mr Cummings is not employed by the Conservative Party or by Conservative MPs, and the future of his employment is therefore a matter for the Prime Minister. Please be assured that I have passed on to the Prime Minister both my own views and the sentiments of the correspondence I have received from constituents.

itsgettingweird · 31/05/2020 16:22

Vdb I'm not sure telling others off for typing things and believing everything is true and then breaking your cousins and the families confidence confirming the child has send really is a food idea.

And having a child with send isn't an exceptional circumstance. I asked if I could do this as a LP with a disabled child and have been told no.

By my Tory MP who came out and supported D.C. when it turned out he'd done the same. Hmm

itsgettingweird · 31/05/2020 16:25

It amazes me how many people still accuse people of listening to media.

Did they all miss the fact Cummings did a press conference. We all listened to him - what he had to say. And many people are able to come to the conclusion 2 parents maybe catching covid and having a child is not exceptional.

It's literally what everyone was doing in the midst of a pandemic - the one that required the lockdown in the first place!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/05/2020 16:38

Erm, we watched a briefing, we do that daily.

It's not the same as then reading or listening to someone's interpretation of what was said during or around that briefing.

Or have I misunderstood what you were trying to say?

vera99 · 31/05/2020 17:01

Poor old Cumming's they are going after him for having no planning now for his cottage. If only he had stated at home he could have avoided all this bother.

universalcreditsuffer.com/2020/05/31/cummings-spare-cottage-without-planning-permission-and-pays-no-council-tax/

Andante57 · 31/05/2020 17:08

@JudyCoolibar

Were Cummings’ wife and little boy in his London house while the mob surrounded it?

No, because it didn't happen. Typically emotive language. It would be physically impossible to surround it.

Ok then, stood in large groups outside the front of the house. However I think you know what I meant.
itsgettingweird · 31/05/2020 17:31

Yes curious I think you did!
I'm trying to say there's as much on here accusing people of being led by the media as there are people angry about not only Cummings - but the subsequent handling of the situation.

What I'm saying is that in this case it wasn't necessary to read between lines of various MSM sources.

We heard it from the horses mouth.

People are making their own minds up from that briefing. Subsequent daily briefings and MPs Twitter posts.

itsgettingweird · 31/05/2020 17:33

Adante at the time he went to Durham there wasn't media camped outside. We were in full lockdown. Death threats I believe. That's a real thing lots of MPs get and I think it's abhorrent tbh.
Plus if media were there they'd have seen him drive off!
