UK set to be the pariahs of Europe thanks to our government's mishandling of the crisis

Britain left off 'safe list' of countries free to holiday in Greece

"The UK was not included on a list of 29 countries released by Athens on Friday deemed to fit an “epidemiological profile” that makes travel from them relatively safe."

Greece decided to ban British travellers on safety grounds even though "the UK is one of Greece’s biggest markets. Last year close to 4 million Britons travelled to Greece, with most heading to its extensive archipelago, which has remained remarkably Covid-free."

How depressing that our government's utter failure to manage the disease, giving the UK the highest death rates in Europe, means that we have now become the pariahs of Europe. Sad

Good on Greece. Why should they open their doors to Covidy Brits? They had the good sense to lock down early and strictly - they’re now reaping the rewards. Meanwhile we’re stuck with worrying high death rates, and new cases loads still in the 1000s everyday ... and a easing of lockdown when the numbers are still high and track and trace is a shambles. Greece will be fine with the Germans ... they have money and a government that cares enough about them to handle this crisis competently - their death rates are noticeably low ... perhaps we could learn something from them?? They’re also using the Apple tracing app - ready to go and with data privacy upheld.

I'd imagine Greece will extend it to France and the UK on July 1st.

It must be awful to live in a country that you hate.

Namenic · 31/05/2020 01:28

well you can ask to see someone’s driving licence if they have a car (has address on it). So it might not prevent everything, but it would help (just like you cannot prevent every break of lockdown or quarantine from abroad). Sending a message on the Cummings front may help too.

Namenic · 31/05/2020 01:30

Plus - if you really want to block off an area, you can. They do it all the time for roadworks and traffic accidents. Also, they built hospitals in a few weeks.

Thanks for your concern, TheAdventures but I'll decide for myself when I stop posting?

Knock yourself out. But you're being antagonistic and rude to people and clearly winding yourself up in the process. It's not healthy.

And you don't think most people care that there have been so many deaths? It's a very strange position to hold to think others aren't bothered. I would argue threads like yours just cause more upset and anxiety for others who are distressed by the situation, which is why I responded to you. But you crack on.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 31/05/2020 10:05

It’ll help OUR economy if recreational money is spent here.

I don't think it's that simple sadly. Travel agents and the many thousands of staff who work for airlines or in jobs associated with airports are going to suffer very badly. That won't be reduced by people choosing to holiday at home.

pinktaxi · 01/06/2020 09:26

It's a Guardian article. What do you expect from them?

So seems Greece is in fact going to allow tourists from Britain to enter from the 15th June, albeit with restrictions

*Greece will allow British holidaymakers to visit this summer, the country’s tourism minister has clarified, after initially leaving the UK off a list of permitted travel nationalities.

Britons will, however, be subject to stricter entry requirements than certain other nations, once they are allowed to arrive from June 15.

On Friday, the Greek Tourism Ministry announced that, as of June 15, people from 29 countries will be allowed to enter the country on direct flights to Athens and to the northern city of Thessaloniki. The list of those eligible, based on those with better than average Covid-19 infection records did not include the UK.

It has now been confirmed that Greece will also accept arrivals from airports deemed high-risk by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which includes British airports, but that they will be subject to testing and possible quarantine*

The OP is going to be so disappointed!

iwantmysay · 01/06/2020 12:41

Its not possible quarantine, its 1 day waiting for results and then 7 days if negative, 14 if positive.

It is, in effect, a ban on high risk countries.

ITonyah · 01/06/2020 12:44

If you can quarantine in your greek villa then that's fine!

BeltaneBride · 01/06/2020 13:35

The more countries that refuse us entry the better. It’ll help OUR economy if recreational money is spent here. It’ll keep the infection rate lower too (in the face of the multitude of lockdown breaches we are already facing locally) if brits aren’t flying all over the place.

Well yeah... apart from the airlines that will go under, and all the other business associated with international travel.
The biggest employer where I live is the airport.

iwantmysay · 01/06/2020 14:03

Absolutely, i just cannot understand the logic with introducing a uk 14 day quarantine for incoming travellers from the 8th June, when we have allowed unhindered access for months.

As much as i would like a cautious approach, destroying the travel industry for zero gain, is madness.
