UK set to be the pariahs of Europe thanks to our government's mishandling of the crisis

www.theguardian.com/travel/2020/may/29/britain-left-off-safe-list-of-countries-free-to-holiday-in-greece

Britain left off 'safe list' of countries free to holiday in Greece

"The UK was not included on a list of 29 countries released by Athens on Friday deemed to fit an “epidemiological profile” that makes travel from them relatively safe."

Greece decided to ban British travellers on safety grounds even though "the UK is one of Greece’s biggest markets. Last year close to 4 million Britons travelled to Greece, with most heading to its extensive archipelago, which has remained remarkably Covid-free."

How depressing that our government's utter failure to manage the disease, giving the UK the highest death rates in Europe, means that we have now become the pariahs of Europe. Sad

IcedPurple ‘Though to read parts of MN, you'd swear the whole world was obsessed with the place

I think rather a lot of other Governments and international media were quite interested in the handling of the pandemic in the UK (specifically England) when they saw an unelected Government advisor hosting his own show from No. 10s back garden this week!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 30/05/2020 14:30

Obviously, you're welcome to comment

But only if the comment is one you agree with right OP?

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 14:32

EatCakeBeMerry - "I am not a scientist but do not think it is as straight forward as comparing death rates. How accurate is each countries reporting and how are they counting?"

The most reliable figures come from excess deaths, as these cannot be fudged.

The UK has the highest number of excess deaths of any country in the world, apart from the US - which has a population over 5 times the size of ours.

trappedsincesundaymorn - no, if you can manage to comment on the topic of the thread, rather than post gratuitous ad hominems. Hmm

Apparently, several posters find it really hard to argue with the OP, so have to resort to attacking me instead.

Your thread title is so misleading it may as well be totally fake. Almost as if it's designed to fuel fear and negativity like many of your posts.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 14:34

jasjas1973 - fab post.

OP posts:
effingterrified · 30/05/2020 14:37

GabriellaMontez - feel free to report it if you wish.

I'm not sure MN thread titles exactly count as 'news' though, fake or otherwise.

I'm not a professional reporter and I write what I think.

If you disagree, you can write what you think. That's how social media works.

What is not acceptable and I will continue to report are the many posts on this thread that are simply personal attacks with no reference to the topic.

You're being very patronising about Greece you know. Yes they had an economic disaster but they're not a third world country 'even Greece' indeed

noraclavicle · 30/05/2020 14:45

Oh, the irony!

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 14:47

?

Did you have a point you wanted to make about the thread topic, nora?

Given the costs in both lives and to the economy, i would say the title is over optimistic.
This virus won't go away by having a big smile and jolly laugh, we need to learn from countries like Greece, Germany Korea and too look at our own and other countries mistakes.

Unfortunately Johnson has no handle on the issue or on any other of his Govt's policies, he is a populist and history always shows that when these guys get into power (and its always men) they fuck up big time.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 30/05/2020 14:51

What do you actually want posters to say Op? We all know the Uk Government has handled the whole situation badly, there's not much we can do about it now though, so what is the purpose of this thread?

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:05

trappedsincesundaymorn - I wanted people to discuss the OP?

You can read what it says.

No, not ‘handled’ in the past tense. ‘Continues to handle’.

Write to your MP if you have concerns. We’re not completely disempowered.

I don't think we are a pariah. I do think we are a laughingstock.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:15

I think we can be both. I think we clearly are the latter, true.

OP posts:
Drivingdownthe101 · 30/05/2020 15:16

Nope, 4 SAGE members say it is close to 1

What do the rest of the SAGE members say?

shinynewapple2020 · 30/05/2020 15:18

@effingterrified People are discussing the OP! It's just that there majority of them are pointing out that your OP isn't factual.

thenamesarealltaken · 30/05/2020 15:21

Ok, the weather is beautiful in the UK and there are so many places to go here - when we can.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:24

shiny - really?

Which bit of the Guardian article I linked to has 'errors'?

And what is your source for this claim?

OP posts:
effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:26

thenamesarealltaken - lovely.

But that doesn't help people who had a holiday booked in Greece for this summer.

But who now can't go because the UK death rates are too high for Greece to risk letting UK citizens into their country.

OP posts:
ITonyah · 30/05/2020 15:27

^^ this

cologne4711 · 30/05/2020 15:34

But who now can't go because the UK death rates are too high for Greece to risk letting UK citizens into their country

So they can go somewhere else instead. I suspect many won't want to go anyway, or won't be able to do because they are vulnerable.

It won't be "UK citizens" by the way it will be "UK residents" that are banned. No point banning UK citizens living in Germany, for example, but every point in banning a German citizen resident in the UK.

I think we're neither pariah nor laughing stock because I don't think anyone outside the UK is remotely interested in what happens here except to the extent that it affects, or may affect, them, eg health issues.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:34

How can a thread title be 'fake'.

It is a genuine thread title.

I wrote it.

I wonder what classifies a thread title as 'genuine news' in your opinion?

I suppose 'Penis beaker' was news, as it certainly was widely reported across mainstream media, globally.

Is that what you mean?

OP posts:
trappedsincesundaymorn · 30/05/2020 15:35

I would be happy to discuss the topic but for 2 reasons 1) your OP is worded in such a way that there is no room for discussion and 2) any discussion that questions your facts is immediately met with scorn or derision and I have no time for that.

For what it's worth Greece are only doing what the UK should have done 2 months ago and fair play to them.
