Here it is - we are still slightly outraged

InMySpareTime · 29/05/2020 08:43

What would happen if when people were asked by track & tracers who they were in contact with while infectious, loads of people said "Dominic Cummings"? Could he be put in constant isolation for a few months?

PurplePansy05 · 29/05/2020 08:50

Minou that is a (sad) possibility.

But regardless, in terms of accountability, I don't think the voters will ever forget. Too many people have been directly affected this time and if they brush it under the carpet without a proper inquiry, it will only add insult to the injury.

The reality is Johnson is not liked anymore, he's not considered a strong leader and the next few years will be financially hard for all of us. He'll forever be associated with being a bad leader in bad times and won't be able to shift this. He won't anything to bribe the voters with either. Brexit will make the current crisis worse, tax rises and austerity will come. This will pass, but it won't be easy. I can't see how he'd ever win another election. He's turned this country into a laughing stock of the world and disrespected the Brirish people.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 09:07

Purple that's so true. He is a populist. His bluster has a certain charm that won people over. He's lost the ability to use that and has failed to become what he needs to be to lead the country though a national health crisis.

Anyone, anywhere, in any profession who is not up to their job - is moved on.

PurplePansy05 · 29/05/2020 09:53

All eyes on Keir Starmer, folks - he is facing a one in a lifetime opportunity going against the shittest PM in living memory. Times are tough, but if Starmer plays it right, he'll win this no doubt. He's far more capable than Johnson and his baseline support is high to begin with. I'll be watching him with interest over the next few months and years, if Johnson even lasts that long.

SouthWestmom · 29/05/2020 09:56

They will get rid of Johnson before the next election. It's then important to remember what the minor /major players did during this.

Noeuf like Rishi Sunak who had a potential to become the next Conservative star and then he supported DC proving himself to be another arse-licker. Let's not forget that when the Conservatives relaunch him as the next leader.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 10:13

Purple totally agree. I said I changed my opinion of Rishi in just the 5 words he wrote on Twitter.

I also wrote similar re Stamer. I said I don't know him and therefore my opinion will be based on what he does from here and how he plays it.

My opinion if Boris is based on how he's played this.

And my opinion that Corbyn may have done an equally as bad or even worse job is based on what he did as previous labour leader.

I dislike being told because I don't agree with how Boris has handled this I'm a staunch lefty. I've actually always and for ever been a floating voter and have voted all parties in various different elections (local/national etc) since I could vote.

PurplePansy05 · 29/05/2020 10:26

Itsgettingweird my views are also mixed, I don't really fit in as such. I don't identify myself as either Labour or Cons, possibly closest to Lib Dems? But alas, they never do as they say, so that's a lost cause. I just want a sensible leader, someone with integrity, trustworthiness, respect and empathy, someone who will seek compromise for the common good, but not betray the key values and principles (read: Jacinda Ardern). Someone who will inspire their government to act the same. We need a British equivalent of Ardern, she's a class act.

Everytimeref · 29/05/2020 11:29

Labours chance of becoming the next government will be made even more difficult because of the change to constitutional boundaries.

InMySpareTime · 29/05/2020 11:52

Although Tories have lost a lot of support from their newly-acquired "red wall" areas, as Johnson's "man of the people" facade has been shown up for what it is.
We aren't in this together, we never were.

1forsorrow · 29/05/2020 12:13

Is Boris throwing us a bone... have a bbq, see your loved ones, to make us move on from Cummings.

He's been doing it all week, with a little help from his friends.
Sunday - schools opening on 1st June (weren't we expecting to hear that yesterday?) Oh dear people still not happy.
Monday - Outdoor markets open 1st June. Oh dear people still not happy.
Tuesday - was that the day Sunak told us we could all go to Nando's. I don't like Nandos. Oh dear people still not happy.
Wednesday - Hancock announces track and trace starting Thursday - hooray - hang on app not starting yet? Oh dear people still not happy.
Thursday - we can all meet up with friends and family. Oh dear people still not happy.

So what is he going to offer us next? If he sends me a nice cheque I might consider forgiving him for the mess he and his buddy have created - but then again I might not.

1forsorrow · 29/05/2020 12:21

I think there might be a problem when people run out of SSP. I know 28 weeks sounds alot, 14 times to be asked to lockdown? The problem is some people might have linked absences going back up to 3 years using up all or most of their entitlement. When they find out they have isolated for 2 weeks and then don't even get SSP I wonder how they will feel about doing it again?

quiteathome · 29/05/2020 12:22

I don't hold grudges. However I am never going to forgive them. (Also a floating voter)

Hoping that Keir can impress over the next few months. And bring Labour into a party I can vote for happily.

Roussette · 29/05/2020 13:14

1forsorrow you are absolutely right

AlohaMolly · 29/05/2020 13:57

1forsorrow im not even sure it’ll be about running out of SSP for so many - isn’t it a set amount and not a percentage? I thought it was about £90 a week? How many of us could survive on £180 a fortnight for as many time’s as necessary? I read that you were only eligible if you tested positive as well?

1forsorrow · 29/05/2020 14:09

AlohaMolly it is just over £95 I think but yes £190 a fortnight isn't great but at least it's more than nothing. I'm not sure about the testing positive.

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/government-suggests-brits-use-holiday-22102688

Government suggests Brits use holiday to cover self isolation due to coronavirus
People who are asked to self isolate at home under the new test and trace regime will be entitled to statutory sick pay if they can no longer work. But the official advice suggests that some people might prefer to use their holiday entitlement to cover the time at home

SabrinaThwaite · 29/05/2020 15:11

It’s here (and bearing in mind that you will be expected to self isolate if anyone in your household has tested positive or has symptoms):

www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-workplace-guidance

Employers should continue to communicate with workers in self-isolation and provide support. This includes allowing people to work from home if they remain well and if it is practicable to do so. This might include finding alternative work that can be completed at home during the period of self-isolation.

If people can’t work from home, employers must ensure any self-isolating employee is receiving sick pay and give them the option to use their paid leave days if they prefer. Further guidance is available on what employees should do if they cannot work.

Employees in self-isolation are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay for every day they are in isolation, as long as they meet the eligibility conditions.

Employers can only claim back SSP from the Government.

BeingonFBdoesntmakeittrue · 29/05/2020 15:14

I don't know why people assume lifting of restrictions or guidance are in response to scandals or public opinion.

Every single one has been planned and 'leaked' to the media weeks before. And talked about extensively on MN.

Yet when it is announced people say 'it's just because of x, y or z that happened this week'.Confused

alreadytaken · 29/05/2020 15:35

Being on - the different approaches in Wales and Scotland and the clear discomfort of the medial and scientific advisors.

1forsorrow · 29/05/2020 15:54

Well it was all supposed to be happening depending on certain things, the R number hasn't really changed in weeks it was 0.7 to 0.9 then it went to 0.7 to 1 and now it is 0.7 to 0.9 again. Not really a big improvement in the last 3 weeks. I don't remember any promises about people being able to meet by 1st June. I'm pretty sure we were told that schools opening would be confirmed on the 28th not the 24th. The fact that they have tried throwing us a bone every day for the last five days while they have the Dominic Cummings going on looks very suspicious.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 16:01

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/coronavirus-lockdown-restrictions-cases-deaths-threat-level-boris-johnson-a9538751.html

This is a good article. It explains that actually according to their own system we are releasing restrictions at level 4 that we were meant to do at level 3.

It's actually quite worrying.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 16:02

Maybe we should keep going about Cummings. Once they've not nothing left to open we may be able to gain a few more bank holidays Grin

1forsorrow · 29/05/2020 16:14

Well I'm retired so no real benefit in bank holidays except I might get to meet up with my children who live 3 or 4 hours away. Bank holidays always good for a visit home.

On a more serious note itsgettingweird that is pretty much what I was thinking.

Total madness.

Roussette · 29/05/2020 16:32

I find it extremely worrying. I think Boris announced this meet up with 6 stuff to try and move the convo on from DC. The health profs looked extremely uncomfortable about it all. He's doing this for the wrong reasons AFAIC

Numbers are plateaud. They aren't dropping. Spain had 35 deaths in FIVE DAYS and are not that much further on with their lockdown, they are taking it very very cautiously.
We had 800 deaths in 2 days.
