Seen running out of Downing Street
Went to self isolate with his wife in Durham with his parents when he had symptoms
Seems he had his family with him
He stayed with his wife and his parents looked after the children

The dep cmo said caring for a dc whilst parents were ill was exceptional circumstances!

Interesting how that was snuck into a press briefing. Almost like someone anticipated there being an upcoming shit hitting the fan moment?

vera99 · 23/05/2020 11:06

IT'S OFFICIAL - LOCKDOWN OVER.

One can imagine the frantic spinning drafting and redrafting the statement until they eventually wordsmithed this one. Plebs suck it up, especially if you voted for this shower of utter shits. Anyways Brexit is coming....

Helmetbymidnight · 23/05/2020 11:06

Wow, its funny they are rushing around to protect Cummings when they were clamouring for the scientist to resign.

B1rdbra1n · 23/05/2020 11:07

Caring for your wife and child is not a crime
that means I can do whatever I want and in my defence I can say that caring for is not a crime
Do they really not understand that hypocrisy is a very bad look??

chomalungma · 23/05/2020 11:07

ust believe driving to parents then self isolating in a separate building whilst (I'm presuming) healthy parents care for a very young DC isnt a sackable offence

Driving 250 miles though?
Not a few miles

But to the other side of the country - what do you think the reaction would have been if this had been an AIBU?

This makes me so angry. People have stuck to the rules in very very difficult circumstances and there is now different rules for the elite! People have missed funerals of loved ones for gods sake!

twinnywinny14 · 23/05/2020 11:11

@chomalungma not a sackable offence in itself for you or I but for a government official who has responsibility for directing the public on what they can and cannot do in midst of a global pandemic? Telling the British public they cannot do this but doing it himself? Putting he trust in the government in question? I think that is sackable tbh

MrsWhites · 23/05/2020 11:11

All within the rules - right in that case, I’m not feeling so good today, I think it might be Coronavirus, my husband feels the same. Off we all pop 150 miles to the in laws who we haven’t been able to visit since March. We’ll stay there for 2 weeks just to be on the safe side!

B1rdbra1n · 23/05/2020 11:12

The writing is on the wall, they see themselves as elites who rule over us
not public servants in a democracy
How can we ever trust people who view us like that ☹️

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 23/05/2020 11:13

Honestly, why did we have to lose a crucial scientist In SAGE because he was visited by his girlfriend AFTER he had coronavirus when it is ok for Dom to visit his vulnerable parents almost 300 miles away while infectious?

You may say the scientist’s girlfriend was married, but so was Boris and we didn’t give a shit about his morals.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 11:15

Lots of defending going on with the mail comments section. It's all a Labour / 'communist ' conspiracy to stop Brexit. It's all labour's fault! Keir Starmer has used schools for his children so that makes this all ok .. on and on it goes!

MadeForThis · 23/05/2020 11:15

What a pity this was released at the weekend and Piers Morgan isn't on breakfast tv to challenge this. Think he's also on holiday next week too. Timing couldn't be better for the government.

twinnywinny14 · 23/05/2020 11:16

I know friends that are single parents who live hundreds of miles from others and worried about their children when they got ill with suspected cv- did they travel to family? No because it’s not within the rules- they made plans that family would come to them if they needed to be hospitalised but the whole household stayed at home and self isolated as per the advice that the government- including Dominic Cummings- had given. Why could he not have done that?

Helmetbymidnight · 23/05/2020 11:17

The Brexiteers used to talk about taking back control, and kicking the elites - now look at the shit they have to defend.
It must be mortifying for them at some level.

Mistressiggi · 23/05/2020 11:23

London to Durham must be about a four or five hour drive. What did they do for loos on the way?
Obviously this chap is untouchable.

wonderstuff · 23/05/2020 11:23

The idea that you can travel with a 4 year old for 260 miles and not have to stop gets me. Even if you think he potentially would have been stopped by the police given travel restrictions means he was risking exposing others just making the journey.

For most of us if you get sick you suck it up and carry on caring for your children. I became unwell about the same time and we isolated, because that was the deal.

I'm disappointed that Downing St are defending him. Lots of people with children got sick and they didn't start travelling across the country.

MrsWhites · 23/05/2020 11:27

There was a thread on Mumsnet a few weeks back from a poster who was struggling to breathe with suspected Coronavirus, single parent, she asked the child to ring 999 who told the boy to ring back if she couldn’t breathe enough to speak!!

One rule for him and one rule for the rest of us!!

ChickenNuggetsChipsAndBeans · 23/05/2020 11:28

Caring for your loved ones isnt a crime

What a ridiculous statement, they broke the rules so they didn't have to care for their child and to outsource that job to their family.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 23/05/2020 11:28

I’m looking forward to see Keir Starmer questioning Boris about this. Having said that, the timing for the release of the news is perfect... there are no PMQs this Monday so everything will be hushed up by the time they are.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 23/05/2020 11:30

I wonder if somebody would start a petition for his resignation.

Actually forget about it, unless it gets to one million the only thing a Tory government will do is to acknowledge it and change the subject.

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 11:31

Lots of people with children got sick and they didn't start travelling across the country.

Exactly - if the rule was "isolate for 7 days unless you want to combine households for childcare, in which case you can travel anywhere", why didn't they say?

Everytimeref · 23/05/2020 11:34

The Number 10 statement is BS, but the faithful will back it to the hilt, this lot are teflon. Nothing sticks.

strugglingwithdeciding · 23/05/2020 11:37

I'm confused did the son not have to be in quarantine as well if living with someone with symptoms or was that not a thing then
My understanding is if I'm ill o have to stay home for 7 days assuming symptom free after 7 days I can go out but everyone who lives with me has to quarantine for minimum of 14 days ?? So surely son should be in quarantine , fair enough if you have a member of family who comes to stay and willing to take risk who then isolated for 14 days as well ( although not strictly in rules )

twinnywinny14 · 23/05/2020 11:42

A screenshot of pm statement on23rd March. Only 4 reasons to leave home and the reason Dominic Scummings has given does not feature. To what extent the rules were broken is neither here nor there, the rules were broken simple as. And he fact that BJ has kept this quiet for 6 weeks or more is scandalous

Dominic Cummings travelled from London to Durham to self isolate
wonderstuff · 23/05/2020 11:45

@strugglingwithdeciding that was definitely the rules. I was unwell at the same time and the guidelines did change a bit in that they initially said that people in the household without symptoms could go out to exercise as long as they distanced. It expressly said no one could go to out for any other reason and that you should arrange for food and medicine to be delivered.
