Until I see a report or story in a decent publication, it's impossible to assess (and I won't even click on the link) because the DM WILL leave out key information/ edit key information.

I honestly think that if you're relying on the DM for your info on Covid-19 then right there, you're making a serious mistake and losing out.

Nihiloxica · 18/05/2020 15:21

Maybe we should make mathematics a compulsory school subject.

No, hear me out. I know it sounds crazy but understanding how numbers work can actually be useful in everyday life.

Kazzyhoward · 18/05/2020 15:22

70 is a tiny number. Do people really want schools to stay closed until there's a vaccine? Are people happy for their kids not to go to school for a year, 18 months, 2 years? What if there's never a vaccine. People need to get a grip. It's all about REDUCING numbers, not eliminating them.

LemonTT · 18/05/2020 15:25

How many children tested positive before they went back to school over the course of a week?

Nihiloxica · 18/05/2020 15:29

Some people want schools to stay closed until there is NO RISK.

Some of these people even claim to be teachers.

Mind blowing.

1forsorrow · 18/05/2020 15:29

70 is low if all children were tested, if they tested 70 it is very high. I don't think we know enough to judge.

mumwon · 18/05/2020 15:31

so these children contracted this before they went back to school - so some children maybe asymptomatic & test negative (because that can/does happen with children) & may spread it - of course (sarcasm alert!) children don't get cv, get it mildly & don't pass it on - well lets see how the French experiment works & please note we have had a wider spread & are opening society earlier than they & other countries have

MyCatHatesEverybody · 18/05/2020 15:32

And...?

fishesgirl · 18/05/2020 15:33

As the article says, most of these children will have been infected before schools reopened.

...
Which lllustrates why re-opening schools was unwise!

jamaisjedors · 18/05/2020 15:35

The schools reopened today... some primary last Tuesday. It's too early to be saying that kids caught it or passed it on at school.

And most kids AREN'T back at school, I don't believe at all that there are millions of kids back at school (am in France).

I know NOONE who has kids in school yet - and I also know a lot of teachers who are just "minding" a few key workers's kids.

vanillandhoney · 18/05/2020 15:36

How many children have been tested?
How many children are back at school now compared to normal times?
How many of those children had it before schools went back?
Is just in one area or is it all over France?

Saying "70 children have been diagnosed Coronavirus since schools re-opened" is utterly meaningless as a one-off statistic.

helpmum2003 · 18/05/2020 15:36

Those figures do not concern me at all.

As PP have said we have to learn to live with the virus. In our family the damage to mental health and learning by not being at school is far outweighing the small CV risks.

Wallywobbles · 18/05/2020 15:37

According to French news 70 schools have shut down again since 11/05 out of 40000.

The tests available are not very sensitive so not very useful in practice in circumstances like this.

ListeningQuietly · 18/05/2020 15:39

Were they tested for other infectious diseases that could put their families and teachers at risk - or just that one ......

iamapixie · 18/05/2020 15:41

Statistics like that are meaningless.
How many were there in whichever cohort is affected before reopening?
What is the incidence within whatever cohort it is outside of school?
Is anyone actually ill? We know that the vast vast majority of children are either asymptomatic or have extremely mild symptoms.
Is there a higher incidence of Covid than there is of other illnesses such as colds etc?
Simply saying that a certain number of people have an illness without far more data-gathering and extrapolation (based on evidence) is pretty pointless; though of course that is what newspapers do as that is how they make money.

Greenpoppins · 18/05/2020 15:41

70 doesn't seem many at all considering the number of children returning

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 18/05/2020 15:41

Oh look - another example of someone starting a thread to prove that we should all stay in lockdown FOREVER and then disappearing once it seems that the majority of posters on the thread might not agree with that perspective 🤔

Inkpaperstars · 18/05/2020 15:45

Were they tested for other infectious diseases that could put their families and teachers at risk - or just that one

I imagine any novel infectious diseases/ current global pandemics that threaten exponential growth were included. After all they are trying to monitor effect of certain measures on infection rate, not just because of risk of illness among teachers and parents, but because of risk to health, economy, global security etc of exponential growth.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 18/05/2020 15:45

That's encouraging isn't it?

MrsTravers · 18/05/2020 15:46

Unless I'm missing something, the article also doesn't specify if it is adults or children who have tested positive, aside from the reference to one reception child.

If an adult in particular, it is quite possible they caught the virus elsewhere.

nellodee · 18/05/2020 15:48

There have been 2573 new cases reported in France since they returned to school on May 12th. If 70 of them are in schools, this accounts for 2.7% of new cases. That's a fairly substantial proportion of cases. It doesn't suggest to me that schools are risk free and that there is no risk of infection in that age category.

However, 70 cases is still relatively low. I'm interested to see how that number changes over time.

Quartz2208 · 18/05/2020 15:48

Isnt this positive though - the testing and tracing regime is working and that they are on the ball

These closings "are an illustration of the fact that we are strict," said Jean-Michel Blanquer, who clarified that these were "cases that occur almost every time outside of school".

"It is a very small percentage, often in the same city,"

So it is a good and positive thing that shows France are in control

So they have tested noted the cases shut and cleaned and quaratined the schools before reopening

HesterShaw1 · 18/05/2020 15:49

Remember the scarlet fever outbreaks last autumn? The measles outbreaks in recent years? Flu doing the rounds? (more young kids die from pneumonia brought on by flu than coronavirus, but that seems to be forgotten). The flu outbreak of 2017-18 which killed 50,000 in the UK?

70 cases amongst that many school kids is a really small number
