Do you reckon we could go on lockdown again

If there is another spike ? I’m happy to go back to work but also scared and I can’t really explain why. I’m young and healthy so not really at risk...just a bit scared to leave my bubble

Having seen the number of people not socially distancing over the Bank Holiday weekend and even more so since some of the lockdown limitations were lifted, I think the R will go above one again quite quickly and lockdown will be in place again. As a friend in Italy said “the UK has never really had a lockdown’.

Bubbletwix · 17/05/2020 13:11

No. At some point people will adjust to the risks and it won’t seem so scary, it’ll just be life. Better treatments are evolving, at the same time as the economic impacts really bite. Whatever the equivalent of compassion fatigue will set in.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 17/05/2020 13:15

I think it is unlikely that the restrictions that have so been lifted will be put back in place. Some of the forthcoming plans to ease restrictions further may get delayed. Various forms of social distancing will persist for quite a while.

bibbitybobbitycats · 17/05/2020 13:17

Once this lockdown is lifted, I don't think there will be another like it. The economy won't be able to take it and there might never be a vaccine for Covid 19. We may have to learn to live alongside the virus.

MinkowskisButterfly · 17/05/2020 13:22

To be fair aren't we still in lockdown? Not that you would know it where I live (NW).

I give it 3 maybe 4 weeks and we will spike again, so restrictions will be tightened 🤷🏼‍♀️

Blennyfish · 17/05/2020 13:22

Most of the people I know that are screaming for lockdown to be continued and schools to stay closed for another 6 months are SAHM’s and people who are on the dole or don’t have secure, full time jobs.

I honestly think people who don’t work or don’t like working always perhaps felt that they were being judged for not working so now that it’s a legitimate reason to stay at home they no longer feel like the odd ones out.

It suits this type of person for lockdown to continue indefinitely.

Megatron · 17/05/2020 13:23

Yes and I think we will be in a stricter lockdown if the R rating goes above 1.

GarlicSoup · 17/05/2020 13:25

Entirely possible.

FTMF30 · 17/05/2020 13:26

@MadameMarie So you think they would impose another lockdown?

Roselilly36 · 17/05/2020 13:26

Very likely for certain groups.

Celan · 17/05/2020 13:31

Well, if they do, I won't be doing it.

effingterrified · 17/05/2020 13:32

Ah, I love these government floating a boat threads.

I wish Cummings would be less cheapskate and just employ a market research company to talk to focus groups (also paid) rather than coming on MN for the freebie version.

Hmm
OneandTwenty · 17/05/2020 13:33

I am not sure

The UK never had a hard lockdown, so it looks like the "soft guidelines" are deemed to be enough.

It's possible, but I can't see it happening. I would rather have a stricter and therefore shorter lockdown as it seems to have work in other countries. Dragging it as long as possible is painful.

I love the conspiracy theories.. and even if the government WAS reading MN, so what?

Bramblebear92 · 17/05/2020 13:42

It's entirely possible, but we're not really out of lockdown. Other countries who are ahead of us and handled the situation better are already re-opening restaurants, cinemas, pubs, leisure sector. We're not looking at doing that for at least another 2 months. I can see it being more a matter of loosening and tightening of restrictions rather than lockdown. Or possibly localised. I just wish I had faith that this government were capable of any of this. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up in some sort of half-lockdown longer than any other country.

CoachBombay · 17/05/2020 13:44

You won't have another lockdown, once the general public become desensitised to the daily death rate, and the reporting of it scales back in the winter, you will be none the wiser to what Covid is doing.

Do you think people have suddenly stopped dying in Italy and Spain, no it's started to reduce and people are desensitised to the lower numbers, they scaled back the reporting and now it's getting back to normal there slowly.

twilightermummy · 17/05/2020 13:46

I don't think they'll ever dare shut schools down again after the difficulties they've had reopening them.

OneandTwenty · 17/05/2020 13:52

It's a bit simplistic, have you even looked at their numbers?

CoachBombay · 17/05/2020 13:56

It is simplistic but general populations look for simplisitc views. The general population are not epidimiolosts and professionals with experience in the field, they are generally lead by the media and what is told to them by the media.

I know that's harsh, but it's just the way it is. If the media change its tune so do the masses. 🤷🏻‍♀️

FurForksSake · 17/05/2020 13:56

No, I don't think so. I think we will have test, track and isolate to help suppress spikes.

Here most people are still acting completely appropriately, you don't need 100% for a lockdown to work. Most people are still abiding by rules.

Where can people now go that they couldn't before? The garden centre? Stay outside a bit longer? Those are really low risk activities. People that can work from home should still be wfh and those who can't could work before anyway. I don't think tonnes of people have suddenly resumed working in unsafe ways.

We will probably see a slight rise and then fall again as in other places.

I do think face masks should be mandatory in all shops and on public transport, I cannot see why this hasn't been done. It is that that will cause a rise potentially, and something so easy to implement.

schools have been open the whole time and some have been very busy (NHS nurseries) with only a few confirmed cases in teachers (that may have been picked up from family or the community, without tracing who knows?) so I don't think schools phased opening will cause a spike.

We will have to live in the 1.5 / 2M economy for the long term and you won't be able to hug anyone any time soon. Not sure how that works for people dating... birth rate will drop at some stage I imagine!

DeadHouseBounce · 17/05/2020 13:56

If there is any spike people will enforce their own lock-down IMO, many might go to work if they really have no other choice, but can`t see pubs/eating places/theatres etc. being busy if there is a spike again. Many people will be trying to build a cash cushion for the next emergency so I think saving up spending down for a while.

SospanFrangipan · 17/05/2020 13:58

There's a reason Wales, Scotland and Ireland haven't lifted anything! We've not even reached our peak here in North Wales yet 😢

MadameMarie · 17/05/2020 13:58

@FTMF30

If public opinion was demanding a lockdown and the hospitals were getting overwhelmed then that's when they would. Whether that'd happen though.

As I stated it was public opinion that really drove the initial lockdown because they delayed and delayed it as long as they could get away with. The point of the lockdown originally was to protect hospitals being overwhelmed.

totallyyesno · 17/05/2020 13:59

I think there is unlikely to be a full lockdown again.

I don't think there has been a full lockdown yet, has there? It's always been quite a soft lockdown and yes, I think it could return if numbers go up.

User8008135 · 17/05/2020 13:59

Possible in winter maybe when sickness rockets anyway but no one can guess anything. Hopefully keep up degrees of social distancing in work and places like shops, hospitals and doctors and we will be less likely to see those winter bugs too.

Hopefully they'll be less flu speed with people more likely to stay home or work home if ill. Though i guess that depends on employers too, if they discourage sick staff in now and drop penalties.

More care with coughs and sneezes. More handwashing then usual might also mean less norovirus too!
