So no hugging, mixing households until a vaccine?

Hi,

I have been wondering this for a long time and then last week, Nick Hancock admitted that this would likely be the case.....which is horrendous.

If we do manage to keep R under 1 and eventually well below, which I do understand is looking unlikely without more waves, then why won't it ever be safe to mix with our loved ones until there's a vaccine?

I'm starting to feel suffocated by the idea, as I know so many are.

What are your thoughts?

In addition to the worldwide scientific community trying to create a safe vaccine they are also looking at effective treatments for Covid-19. Imagine if they could simply treat those who test positive instead of simply managing symptoms.

I suspect a treatment is more likely to come before a vaccine, if indeed a vaccine is ever approved. That said, I'm not a medical professional, it just makes more sense to me.

I have heard medical professionals (in real life) say there isn’t really any treatment and never will be! This is not treatable beyond support. The only hope really is a vaccine!

Friend of mine is working in a government job in a Covid19 response role. Very sensible chap, had a walking date yesterday and ended up back at his flat! I don’t blame him at all.

Bullshit. Most people who catch it have mild symptoms, so symptoms treatable with over the counter remedies. Out of those who are admitted to hospital, most recover and are discharged - so they have been "treated" via drugs, oxygen, or whatever. I read only yesterday that doctors now have a better understanding of the virus and have a range of treatments which are very different to what they were doing 2 months ago. Of course, "some" people will get it with severe symptoms that will kill them and no amount of treatment will help if their underlying conditions mean that the normal treatments don't work.

And that just shows you left to our own choices we choose that is best for us and will take risks just that one time

Not really true. BAME people are more at risk than white people. And the old are more at risk than the middle aged.

No. But there are quite effective treatments, even if these must be continued long term; and it is possible to massively reduce the risk by using a condom.

It’s not bullshit. There are no drugs to treat this. Oxygen is support, NOT treatment. I’m not sure what you mean by ‘whatever’? Care to expand?? Treatment makes the disease go away, treatment actively kills the disease. Support helps you through it by reducing pain or temporarily suppress symptoms. Cold and flu remedies do not get rid of the cold or flu. You still have to go through the virus but they help the pain and discomfort you feel through it.
There is no treatment and as I say, many of my medical professional friends / family members believe there may never be!

As said, there is effective treatment for HIV so that it can’t be passed on to anyone else. There is also PrEP, which can be taken to prevent getting HIV, and also PEP, which acts like the morning after pill.

It must be stressed that although there are comparisons to be made between HIV and coronavirus, they really are so so different - HIV is a retrovirus and once caught lies dormant in the body which is why it is so difficult to find a cure. This does not happen with coronavirus.

The most recent Welsh document clearly lays out that contact with family and friends (without social distancing) won't be permitted until there's a vaccine or effective treatment, for those saying people are misunderstanding

Are people really going to take any notice of that eventually? How would anyone know, unless a nosy neighbour reported that they’d seen someone else going into the house or garden (not that jog would surprise me)?
