Shame we don't have an election for ages.

But great to finally have some opposition to this government again, particularly as UK deaths overtake every other country in the world apart from the Us, that has a population 5 times as big.

so it's acceptable for Tory MPs to deliberately mislead?

I doubt they checked whether the accusation was true or not - as with most retweets.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 14/05/2020 14:49

In the case of Dorries it is a clear breach of the Ministerial Code, although as we have seen, the problem with that is the only person who can find you guilty of breaking that is the PM, including in any case where the PM themselves were to breach it.

And this is not the first time Starmer has been the target of doctored videos.

@B1rdbra1n Agree entirely. One can only hope Boris is starting to feel a little warm around the toes.

Stellaris22 · 14/05/2020 14:50

MPs should be checking their sources before tweeting, especially in regards to damaging the reputation of others.

Simple yes or no, was it acceptable to tweet a doctored and misleading video?

chomalungma · 14/05/2020 14:52

Always a good thing to check when you retweet a video about a lawyer - especially when it comes to such things as CSE.

Especially the source of the video

Human to human transmission was proven by German scientists in mid january, WHO changed their advice shortly afterwards.

One wonders why Angela Merkel and the Dutch PM were still shaking hands at the beginning of March, not to mention the Spanish government minister who visited an association for prostitutes, caught coronavirus and kissed the Queen of Spain on the cheek.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 14/05/2020 14:56

Regards that list of "Everybody's doing it" whataboutery, I would also add the disgraceful represenation of Nye Bevan who never said Tories were Vermin. He said that some of them were lower than vermin.

Clavinova · 14/05/2020 14:56

Simple yes or no, was it acceptable to tweet a doctored and misleading video?

Obviously yes if they knew it was doctored and misleading - maybe not if they thought there was a grain of truth in it.

ScribblingMilly · 14/05/2020 14:57

I'm delighted to see the back of Corbyn and have the type of opposition leader who will scrutinise the government's decisions and hopefully improve their performance. So long as his immediate aim is to make sure our country survives this crisis in the best shape it can I'm happy.
As for Starmer himself, I've read different things about his integrity & he's not inspired me so far. I'll reserve judgement.

FloggingMoll · 14/05/2020 14:58

@jasjas1973 You're absolutely right. I think what's happening in care homes is an absolute fucking travesty and I don't think history will judge the main players (BoJo and his train of clown cars) kindly.

It speaks volumes that those in Government would seize on a tweet like that and share it. It's also indicative of the kind of politics we're reduced to - throwing shit like monkeys and knowing for the most part, it'll stick because people don't engage their critical thinking skills.

jasjas1973 · 14/05/2020 14:58

The issue here is the right have very real form for spreading lies about Labour leaders, these then get published in the predominantly tory supporting MSM, with any subsequent apology many months later and on page 11 at the bottom left.

Very damaging to democracy, the electorate should be given accurate information and news, not a string of lies and innuendo.

IMHO any MP, or any party doing this should be forced to resign their seat or in the case of parties be made to make a very public apology and pay damages to charity.

Stellaris22 · 14/05/2020 14:58

Hang on, so it is ok to tweet videos knowing they are doctored and wrong?

Would like to hear why.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2020 14:59

Yes it is great to have him as the opposition leader. It felt like ages waiting for the leadership to change after the election but he’s fresh air atm. Direct and very good at PMQ.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2020 15:00

Johnson could pretty much just laugh off Corbyn, with his friends, but no chance with Starmer and it’s showing. He’ll need to sleep well and be quick to keep up.

chomalungma · 14/05/2020 15:01

Obviously yes if they knew it was doctored and misleading - maybe not if they thought there was a grain of truth in it

You mean it was unacceptable to retweet a misleading video?

Good. See - that wasn't difficult, was it..

And it happened just the day after a difficult PMQs..for some reason

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 14/05/2020 15:03

10DS spokesman declines to condemn the fake video, and refuses to say if the MPs were ordered to take it down:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/may/14/labour-urges-tory-mps-to-admit-keir-starmer-video-was-doctored

The 10DS spokesman, in case you're interested, is the one in the middle of this photo, Lee Cain, now the PM's press secretary.

Clavinova · 14/05/2020 15:10

And Boris Johnson must have had more quotes twisted or taken out of context than any other MP in recent history.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 14/05/2020 15:11

"Piccaninnies with watermelon smiles?"

We took that out of context?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 14/05/2020 15:12

F**k Business?

Clavinova · 14/05/2020 15:12

Hang on, so it is ok to tweet videos knowing they are doctored and wrong?

Apparently - half of the posters currently here seem to enjoy doctored videos of Nigel Farage.

Stellaris22 · 14/05/2020 15:14

I don't understand why it's worth discussing anything then if you are happy to spread lies and are happy for MPs (or anyone) to purposefully and deliberately mislead the public.

chomalungma · 14/05/2020 15:16

I wonder how much of a coincedence this was?

Think before you retweet.

Stellaris22 · 14/05/2020 15:16

And I wasn't questioning others, I was referencing this one particular doctored video.
