Why can't he just answer a question straight?
And also if you have children did he just suggest you tell your employer and stay home? That is not going to go down well!

How does Boris know what the blokes job is, does he have a wife, can she work from home, will the blokes work even have work for the bloke to do?
Oh I know the bloke should talk to his Employer.

Devlesko · 11/05/2020 23:03

Employers may have numerous employees who will have the same issue with childcare, they can't suddenly solve that issue for everybody and run their business (in a recession).

I don't think he could say anything else, employers need staff to work. Childcare is irrelevant to business.
It's only relevant to the parents.
He's basically saying you're on your own, which you are.

Heygirlheyboy · 11/05/2020 23:04

He could have said 'That will depend on your circumstances, as outlined in the public service pamphlet' or some such. Ie these things should have been thought through as much as possible.

chomalungma · 11/05/2020 23:06

@mummmy2017

The question was about returning to work if there was no childcare available

He then talked about covid - secure workplaces, offices that had still been going on...and then eventually mentioned childcare

I think his brain just heard 'return to work' and he gave his Type 1 answer.

KenDodd · 11/05/2020 23:11

Well done Tory voters, this is your mess to own.

lyralalala · 11/05/2020 23:24

He could have said 'That will depend on your circumstances, as outlined in the public service pamphlet' or some such. Ie these things should have been thought through as much as possible.

He could also have said “I don’t know. I’ll make sure we clarify that point after this and get the information out to people”

He’d never admit he doesn’t know the answer though.

Heygirlheyboy · 11/05/2020 23:27

Yes, also absolutely fine.

mummmy2017 · 11/05/2020 23:50

No he said ask your employer, but if you have no childcare then that is a barrier to stop your returning and employers should treat it as such.

mummmy2017 · 11/05/2020 23:54

I think the comment I heard today sums up the feelings forecast here.
If Boris turned up at your door gave you personalized projective equipment you'd still find a reason to complain.

FliesandPies · 12/05/2020 00:20

mummy2017 - he said ask your employer, but if you have no childcare then that is a barrier to stop your returning and employers should treat it as such

After the question is asked, Johnson spends over 2 MINUTES waffling about teachers and safe workplaces before actually giving an answer. He then says if people can't get access to childcare and their child can't go to school, it's only fair to regard that as an obvious barrier to their ability to go back to work and 'i'm sure that employers will agree with that'

'I'm sure that employers will agree with that' is not the same as 'employers should treat it as such' which carries much greater weight.

Even if he had said what you quoted, it wouldn't answer the question of how employers and employees are meant to resolve the issue.

Smithtylater · 12/05/2020 00:24

@mummmy2017 projective equipment? Did you write Boris 'speeches'? Is there a reason you are so defensive of him? Nobody can deny that he was shit this evening, was unclear at times and did not appear confident in what he was saying!

Well we're not going to be able to prove that are we? (if he did give me projective equipment I would be sure to project it at him!)

On the other hand you have proved the reverse very true - no matter how incompetent and disgraceful Johnson and his Gov are you will still be lamely plugging away trying to defend them.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 12/05/2020 00:44

Finally proud of being a Labour voter again! Starmer is shaping up to be a tiger in the Commons. I have high hopes for him. Starmer the Slayer Grin

Lynda07 · 12/05/2020 00:47

Waffle is the correct word for what he does. Boris is totally out of his depth; you would think he of all people would be a bit more on the ball about this virus, after all he had it and was very ill plus he has a new baby. Sheesh!

mummmy2017 · 12/05/2020 01:01

There is no one else.
Do you understand that
This is the person in charge, your moaning , bad mouthing and hate of this man means nothing he ever does will be enough.
Every person in charge is doing roughly the same thing as Boris, because anyone can see that we have to check any move forward does not mean more deaths.
I defend the man because I don't think anyone else would do differently with the same experts from this country.

FliesandPies · 12/05/2020 01:15

I defend the man because I don't think anyone else would do differently with the same experts from this country

mummmy2017 that's because you are deliberately blinkered to all his faults. You dismiss justified criticism as 'moaning', justified frustration and contempt as 'hate'. Even the Daily Mail is showing greater critical faculties than you, they clearly agree he is making a total mess of this situation.

TinySleepThief · 12/05/2020 05:15

I defend the man because I don't think anyone else would do differently with the same experts from this country.

You dont think anyone in the whole country would give clearer more concise answers when asked a question? I find that staggering to believe.

This isnt about whether his approach for the pathway to normality is good enough or whether the Government advice is the best approach.

This thread is about why he incessantly waffles when ever he is asked a question. How anyone can deny he spends 90% sometimes 100% of his time answer a question avoiding the question entirely is totally beyond my comprehension. You must be the only person the the UK outside his cabinet to believe he gives clear and direct answers. Even when asked in the commons yesterday by an MP to give a yes or no answer to her question he chose to waffle for 2 minutes. It's like I said earlier he seems completely unaware that sometimes just a simple yes or no is the best answer he could give.

mummmy2017 · 12/05/2020 06:53

Yes , I like Boris.
Which very much puts me in a minority.
But he can't just say I don't know.
If he did the papers would react to that, saying he isn't in charge.
So instead he is saying too much, about what he does know.
However there is nothing set in stone so there are no cold hard facts to give.
How will people get back to work,?
You need to ask your own employee.
When will bars open?
When we bring infection rates down.
Will there be a second wave?
Well that depends on you not meeting too many people! So stop being selfish and limit who you see. Love your family enough to avoid them in case your the arse who is infecting people.

JamieLeeCurtains · 12/05/2020 06:57

How will people get back to work,?
You need to ask your own employee.

That makes about as much sense as Boris Johnson.

mummmy2017 · 12/05/2020 07:03

Sorry should have been employer.

TinySleepThief · 12/05/2020 07:04

But he can't just say I don't know

I'd respect him a damn site more if he did and I suspect others would too.

If someone asks a question and he genuinely doesn't know the answer how is it better to waffle about stuff that is irrelevant to the aforementioned question for 5 minutes than for him to say obviously we dont know all the answers but hopefully if we do x and y then it will be possible to do z?

How does blabbering on about workplaces being covid secure help when you asked a question about if the companies you've now allowed to open such as construction can send their children to school?

Its not about whether we like him or not its about him being astute enough to know when to admit he doesn't have all the answers, rather than pretending he does by waffling about irrelevant crap.

mummmy2017 · 12/05/2020 07:15

He may have waffled but there was information that did apply to many people in the answer.
Ask your Employer.
See what plans they have.
Depending on when you go back schools may be taking your children.
See if you can still work from home.
Saying about not using public transport
Saying about how your employer will need to.protect you
That if you have no childcare then you can use that as a reason to not go to the buisness premises.

WrongKindOfFace · 12/05/2020 07:32

He was diabolical. They have got more sense out of a cushion.

Roussette · 12/05/2020 07:48

When Piers Morgan questions Boris, there is something very very wrong, you have to understand that Mummy.

Sometimes it's not the answers he is trying to give, it is the way he is saying it. For instance, Sunday... I listened very very carefully to his address to the Nation. I'm an intelligent person, and I had no idea what he was saying. It was just sound bites and him banging the table.

You say 'he may have waffled'... but in these dire times, he cannot talk to the country and waffle. That is not what we need and want.

It was laughable to watch the media trying to make sense of what he was saying and it's still going on.

BBC now... Matt Hancock being questioned... a viewers' question... 'why can a Childminder look after my child but a family member can't?'

That is just one of 100 questions that are out there. And that is because Boris is incapable of being concise and succinct.

I have relations in Spain. I understand their 5 point plan and what can be done over there at this moment in time. I don't understand that in my own country, the UK though. There are few questions about it because their PM and Ministers have set it out in a very clear way.
