Now that Boris has said people can drive for exercise and leisure, you know they'll flock to seaside's, lakes, peaks, etc.
Which means if they're carriers they'll be spreading the virus to petrol stations pumps, gates, railings etc.

I don't get the logic behind him saying that tbh.

Well said @refusetobeasheep the “them and us” culture is just awful

Imakeyworker · 11/05/2020 08:28

Also Monkey Do you know why the word Emmet is used?

The words Emit and Emmit mean completely different things.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/05/2020 08:29

Totally agree both. The bizarre thing is that if it was aimed at people of a different nationality or here would be uproar. It isn’t hard to see that a lot of people have an ingrained Zenophobia of which racism is a part.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/05/2020 08:29

@Imakeyworker maybe different regions (or villages) use these vile terms differently...?

dottiedodah · 11/05/2020 08:36

Let me guess OP you live in a lovely National Park? Maybe those people not so lucky as you .,might welcome the chance to leave their urban home for a few hours to sample your joys. Unless we are locked down forever and a day! Before you ask, we live on the South Coast and expect a large volume of day trippers and so on .We lived in London as a child and went out a lot then .Feel grateful for our seaside life now ,and dont begrudge anyone else a sniff of sea air!Emits and Grockles are horrid sneery names IMO!

Also Monkey Do you know why the word Emmet is used?

Cornish dialect word for Ant, which in turn comes.from Old English æmete.

But I'm sure you can see that by googling. Off you pop and do that. You my.learn something.

Nope. A social housing estate in a small town plagued with smack heads, scumbags, thieves and generlly unpleasant people. I don't have a garden either. .. or a big TV... Or a goat..

Imakeyworker · 11/05/2020 08:42

Teatea
An Emmet is an ant. It's an analogy.
Tourists crawling around tourist areas like ants.

People just can't spell. Emit and Emmit are completely different words.

lazylinguist · 11/05/2020 08:43

I live in Cumbria, just outside the Lake District national park. Cumbria has had a high number of cases for ages. I don't really see why people travelling, say, an hour or two to come and walk in the fells are more likely to spread it that local people driving 20 mins to walk in the fells (which we were already allowed to do). Locals are presumably using petrol pumps too, because they need to drive to work or the supermarket.

It's almost as if people are thinking that tourist spots are pristine, coronavirus-free zones that must not be infected by toxic, disease-ridden outsiders.

We've been avoiding driving into the national park itself because we don't need to - we've got lots of lovely walks from the house. But we probably will now. The majority of the huge number of lakes and fells are always pretty much deserted, even in high season tbh. Tourists tend to stick to the same few small areas - it's very easy to avoid the crowds if you want to.

No one likes tourists really! They are a necessary pain in the ass! I grew up in one of the world's most popular tourist destinations (a city). No one likes the tourists clogging up public transportation, stopping in the middle of the road, crowding musuems etc etc. I thought it was just a given that tourists are annoying Grin

Now I live in a national park and, surprise surprise, we find tourists annoying here too! I'm sure when I am a tourist I'm annoying. Meh.

More to the point: Wales is closed. The most popular mountains are especially closed. Come back and annoy us all later...

TabbyMumz · 11/05/2020 08:48

Well, for all those people in Wales saying "dont come to Wales", you can be pretty sure lots of them will be popping over the border to England, where they can drive where they like for exercise.

Notmyrealname855 · 11/05/2020 08:52

It’s not all of us arbitrarily pulling up drawbridges :( read my post on page 10 I think it is.... in the Lakes we have a terrible strain (6 weeks+ healthy people bedbound and no signs of recovery yet); we are grieving (high mortality rate, who were our friends and loved ones); our health service is overstretched at the best of times; we’re terrified of a second wave especially for those still trying to kick C19.....

We really really want people back, god knows for the economy of nothing else. But Boris shouldn’t allow travel to areas that are so hard hit. It wouldn’t matter if we were in the Lakes or Luton, we’re still dealing with too many cases and the strain we have here seems very dangerous. It’s been so hard and seems worse maybe than other areas? We can’t be explaining this to visitors every time they come here, we don’t want to pass it on

We were wearing gloves and washing hands btw so not sure how it’s so bad here!

Please do read my previous post, I did try giving details that might help

Imakeyworker · 11/05/2020 08:52

No one likes tourists really! They are a necessary pain in the ass!

They rely on tourists to keep their economy afloat but don't want them to come.

Also Monkey Do you know why the word Emmet is used?

But when definition of word, Ant, is given:

I know what it means you fool.
I also know how to spell it.

Weird..

Do you know how to spel it tho? Really?
Cause if you do that might.mean you have some knowledge.of the English language, etymology and the like.
And if thats the case you would surely know that language changes and alters over time. Do we, for example, still use Ekename? Scadinavia? Pease?
Or have they been replaced by different spellings over the years?
Often these changes are traced back to a single.appeareance in a single.works but the new spelling catches on and replaces the old. Scandinavia is a good example of this. Pliny the elder is seemingly the first to use the modern spelling, which replaced Scadinavia and other words referring to the same place

Saying that I don’t mind people in areas that aren’t near habitation... if you can drive here, come for a walk on the fells then go for it! But please please avoid walks through people’s homes :( partly as you don’t know their C19 status or if they’re vulnerable to it, and you don’t know if they’re grieving (yes we’ve had that... a couple walking through saying it was a lovely day, asking a new C19 widow for directions... they weren’t to know but heartbreaking)

Hate C19, not the people Wine

Imakeyworker · 11/05/2020 08:56

Monkey

Yes, words change over time.

In this case it's because locals can't spell their own slang word.

Dear God.

It's pretty obvious from the way you post that you don't ordinarily write in the style of an on-line encyclopaedia.

Let's just call it a good guess.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 11/05/2020 09:05

DO YOU know what it means.

And I answered...
You can then accuse me.of copy pasting if you desire. But a definition is a definition, not that many different ways to give a definition so obviously it will be the same as other places that list the word. OED likely have the same definition. Google Scholar probably has the same definition too. Maybe I copied and pasted from several different places at the same time?
