Now that Boris has said people can drive for exercise and leisure, you know they'll flock to seaside's, lakes, peaks, etc.
Which means if they're carriers they'll be spreading the virus to petrol stations pumps, gates, railings etc.

I don't get the logic behind him saying that tbh.

Well, the normal laws pertaining to parking legally and safely haven't changed, and neither has the requirement to socially distance.

I thought the College of Policing confirmed on Wednesday that social distancing is a guideline and so not enforceable by them. The police turning visitors away for the reason that too many people means no social distancing possible are therefore acting outside of their remit.

GinnyStrupac · 17/05/2020 16:07

Don't mention flooding - it's a sore point after earlier in the year - water not people.

It is even worse today than yesterday. The traffic started flooding in early this morning and it's been heavy and constant since. It made me fully realise just how nice it's been to have the smell of fresh air and the sound of birdsong and silence these last two months - one small positive in the midst of this dreadful situation. This weekend it's been back to polluted air and the constant roar of cars and loud motorbikes, worse even than a Bank Holiday weekend. In normal times you just have to put up with it and work around it, in the full knowledge that of course people want to come and we are 'the visitors' when we go somewhere else. It is not normal times though, and we are not going anywhere else because of that.

LifeMatters · 22/05/2020 12:15

Well...you know how I was saying earlier I'd be driving to the beach but I'll make sure To keep the social distancing ?
I was planning to go on Wednesday however I changed my mind.

After discussing it with my husband we decided not to add us three to the large number probably inundating the beaches due to nice weather.

Omg we were right in not going as the beaches were packed and I doubt we would have been able to keep the correct distance.

We will wait until it's safer.

Good call, pp.

Returning to the OP, and speaking from experience after nearly a fortnight of Boris-induced bedlam, yes, people in beauty spots were right to be concerned. And there's a bank holiday weekend upon up...

Why do people in beauty spots think they deserve special protection? Protection not given to people in airport cities?

Hundreds of thousands arrived at the airports the past two months. Thousands continue to arrive and head off on public transport with no checks or quarantine.

Some of these arrivals might even be heading to a beauty spot.

The government's now proposing all these airport arrivals self isolate. After getting home on public transport. Oh and it's not happening until 8 June. For some reason.

I have no idea. It's not like cities have the infrastructure of cities and often these popular travel spots are smaller, rural, fewer amenities, often have a higher number of elderly residents. Maybe people in these smaller communities want to know that they can go to the local shop and buy milk and bread without finding it's all sold out by lunch when the village lanes are full of abandoned, irresponsibly parked cars and said day trippers thought it would be such a good idea to save a trip later and just nip to the shop. It doesn't matter that means lots of vulnerable residents can't get their basics.

I do think there should have been more quarantining of arrivals in the UK much sooner, but why not direct your irritation to the feckless government who have failed the country instead of people in smaller communities who are understandably focusing on their safety.

Went to the beach today - 30 min drive away
Thought it would be busier actually but deliberately didn’t go on weekend and went to quieter end

Teateaandmoretea · 22/05/2020 21:45

@sharkyfan you are highlighting the problem here - most people are sheep frankly and for some reason go to the same places as everyone else known as ‘beauty spots’ for a saunter and an ice cream/ cup of tea (most of which aren’t that beautiful because of all the people). The beach you picture just doesn’t fit that mould because there is nothing actually there like a surf shop or promenade (other than a beautiful beach 🙄)

If everyone just used a bit of creativity and spread out there wouldn’t be a problem. But that won’t happen so while most places are shut a few tourist spots will be rammed (we have one near here, I was Confused by the number of people there this afternoon. It isn’t just people from towns though, it is also unimaginative locals....

The answer is to open primark 🤦🏻‍♀️

London isn't rural. It has the largest elderly population in the UK.

Yes it's the government who are responsible for failing the millions living in urban centres. But it's a valid question to ask of people in rural areas. Given the government isn't protecting people living in cities, why would you expect them to protect you?

Oh and yes. The fantastic infrastructure in urban areas. That saw London alone raise the threshold for hospital admittance during the height of the first wave. Because only London hospitals were too overwhelmed. Nowhere else.

If you don't want unessential travel, perhaps you too should ask the government to change policy. Currently it is allowed. In England. How could it not be given the open airport situation. Like I said some of the many thousands arriving might be heading for rural areas. Likely on public transport.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 23/05/2020 04:37

People in rural communities aren't asking the government to protect them.

They're asking the great British public to rub a couple of brain cells together and apply a spot of common sense and show some consideration.

How hard is it to say "gosh, there's a place near me that's rural and regularly packed on a nice day, maybe I'll not drive an hour to said place because I'm not a selfish idiot"?

I'm thinking of going mountain biking one evening next week. I'll go to a quiet car park, do my thing and go home.
Friends of mine managed to go to the beach with their dogs and children. Their photo looks very much like Sharkey's. Why? Because instead of going to the places known to be busy where they can get ice creams, coffees (and then whine about the lack of toilets like everyone else on a bloody day trip), they went somewhere quiet.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 14:46

How do they go somewhere quiet when they live in an airport city. Gosh, perhaps people could show them some consideration too.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 25/05/2020 15:09

We live right next to a country park. I'm not concerned about people using the park etc because there's plenty of space. What's ridiculous is the fact that the country park have closed to vehicles but not to people (presumably with the intention of keeping numbers down) and people are parking in the residential streets, blocking roads, blocking peoples drives, generally being inconsiderate. There's plenty of signs which says they're not to park here but obviously they're ignored. Most of the residents are elderly, I hope none of them need an ambulance as there's no way they'll access the street!

GinnyStrupac · 25/05/2020 15:59

Some of our car parks are now open here - National Park - but some visitors are still selfishly avoiding them, preferring to park in the lanes, gateways and villages to save a couple of pounds or walking a few extra yards.

LolaSmiles · 25/05/2020 21:23

I'm not sure what the airport has to do with people being considerate.

If I think of the 3 nearest airport cities near me, there's the main routes to the airport and centre, and then there's the rest of the city. The idea that people in a city have to go and pile into rural villages because they have an airport in the city is hilarious.

When I lived in an airport city, it was a cross city drive to get there. If I still lived there and chose to drive out the city to more rural places because 'i can't possibly socially distance due to an airport within 30 minutes of my house' that would be totally illogical.

The bottom line is that some people are fundamentally inconsiderate, they want to go off on nice little day trips, pile into smaller communities, park wherever because 'it would be a shame to waste the drive and we're here now', just nip into the rural shop as well and kid themselves that they're doing society a favour.

I love the guidance that the BMC put out for hikers and climbers. One of their points was about responsibility so they suggest members are self-sufficient and have a back up plan in case their original places are busy.
Your average day trippers going to well known, popular beauty spots are unlikely to do that.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 25/05/2020 23:24

Anyone from Durham?

I hear there's a castle.nearby that's nice. People going there for eye tests apparently.
