Not that it matters to me personally, being in Scotland but that was just the biggest load of waffley waffle.
Not even a mention of meeting other households.

anyoldnsme no, that's not right because the construction work is about the economy, not safety. They want minimal mixing to get us to phase two and the mixing they've decided to allow is economic, not social. They could have picked social instead but haven't. You're right that there's no more risk in seeing a family member than a colleague. But there is more risk in removing restrictuons on both types of mixing at the same time. So, while I'm absolutely gutted that mixing households isn't something that has been chosen for phase 1, it hasn't been and we need to accept and follow that ruling.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/05/2020 19:55

All the things he didn't mention aren't part of this plan, so asking "what about" is futile because he doesn't have the answers to that next phase yet
So given that the last step he mentioned was to take place no earlier than 1st July, do I just assume that I am not going to be able to spend time in person with another human being until after that at the very earliest? By which time I will have spent over 3 months on my own.

Smileyoriley · 10/05/2020 19:55

So you can cram yourself onto public transport tomorrow morning to go to your factory or construction job ( no mention at all about social distancing or risk assessments being in place) but can’t play tennis with someone outside your household??? Clear as mud as usual from our wannabe Churchillian leader!

RoseAndRose · 10/05/2020 19:56

Statement to Parliament tomorrow might make things clearer.

Because right now it's pretty confused.

You can go to work, but not use public transport to get there.

Your workplace should be safe, but we're not sure that they will be.

So clear as mud who goes where (and how they get there) in the coming days.

Primary schools might go back in June. But might not - depends on what the 'traffic light' score is. And maybe those facing public exams next year. Or maybe not.
Nothing on nurseries

Lalalaboring · 10/05/2020 19:56

@Sadie789 exactly. I completely agree with you!

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 19:56

Well they can’t continue to pay people to stay home, so I can see why they’ve chosen work before social plans.

Yawnyoureboringme · 10/05/2020 19:57

The part about work is the most confusing, what are people supposed to do?

Do we go back to work if currently furloughed? What about childcare? Do furloughed staff stay off? Do employers get the final say? What about shielding people and work, do they go back, and will the be let go if they don’t?

LizAngharad · 10/05/2020 19:57

I didn’t watch it (too busy convincing 2 year old to eat his carrots) but other half just summarised it. Now we’re not speaking because I said I’d rather have some idea of when we can see family again so I have some childcare than any of what was announced and also that I didn’t think this meant we could go on holiday to Cornwall in June. Apparently I have dashed his only glimmer of hope and he got so angry because I said If I knew definitely that there’d be no seeing family for another couple of months I’d consider self isolatIng for 2 weeks then move in with my parents until this is over. I know that’s technically not allowed but I’m struggling to work and look after a toddler and my mental health is suffering. I’d finally gotten over PND and found a job I love when this happened so I’m so scared of going backwards and also messing up this job. Anyway, that made him really angry, but I just can’t see how bending the rules by moving into another household Until this is over is that much worse than doing a self catered holiday in the U.K. please tell me I’m not the only one feeling frustrated and fed up and exhausted. Honestly, I’d love to have time to leave the house even once a day right now!

Sadie

Hurrah, common sense prevails

Such a welcome relief from so much nonsense posted on this site...

👏👏👏👏

AStarSoBright · 10/05/2020 19:57

I found it very clear, not necessarily exactly what anybody wanted to hear, but it was clear.

Nothing was definite, it was a potential timeline.

Lumene · 10/05/2020 19:58

Thanks @BamboozledandBefuddled I just watched it again to check as I was sure he’d said family members but you are right - he said households.

tenterden · 10/05/2020 19:58

@SauvignonBlanche

I think you can travel to see him but you still have to stay 2m from him. Flowers

tenterden · 10/05/2020 19:58

And do some sunbathing obviously...

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 19:59

@Sadie789 completely agree.

LuluJakey1 · 10/05/2020 19:59

That speech has the potential to cause chaos. I imagine tens of thousands of people are now thinking they have to return to work tomorrow. Yet employers have no social distancing instructions ortime to prepare for that. Many employers will not know if that statement includes their business.

Shops?
Libraries?
Dentists?
Vets?
Cleaners?
Gardeners?
Local building firms who do kitchen extensions etc - two years ago our house was full of builders, electricians, gas engineers, plasterers, decorators, carpenters/joiners, plumbers, delivery men, for 10 weeks. Is that now allowed? I expect not but he told construction workers to go back to work tomorrow.

Nothing about those who are elderly or self-isolating.

No plans

No instructions

He has just made the job of the police undoable re: travel and social distancing.

Are we staying at home or is that no longer the case? What does Stay Alert mean?

It was incredibly badly done. No time for additional clarity before tomorrow morning when apparently lots are expected back at work.

DS1 and DD will not be returning to school and nursery before September- he is in Reception.

MasakaBuzz · 10/05/2020 19:59

I think he was very clear. People are so anti Tory on here they can’t see it.

The message is we are still a long way away from normality.

We will only be able to have more freedom if we continue to be sensible. If we take the piss, the government will have to come down hard again. He is essentially giving us enough rope to hang ourselves.

We are still confined to household groups.

People just need to be sensible. If you want to see your family, then do so. However only do every now and again, keep two metres apart and do it outside.

I expect the finer details to come out in the week.

happystory · 10/05/2020 20:00

Absolutely no mention of nursery, childcare, early years. Waffle waffle waffle.

imsooverthisdrama · 10/05/2020 20:01

Do we go back to work if currently furloughed?
No unless your employer tells you to do so but they need to make it safe .What about childcare? Do furloughed staff stay off?
Well I suppose so for the time being, I'm the same can't go back until dc in school . I suppose if they want you back will need further clarification.

TheRealSlamShady · 10/05/2020 20:02

He said pupils having exams next year (so year 10 for example ) hopefully will see teachers in school in June at some point?

Lumene · 10/05/2020 20:02

People just need to be sensible. If you want to see your family, then do so. However only do every now and again, keep two metres apart and do it outside.

Where did he say it was ok to see family members if you keep 2m apart outside?!?

I thought that was am absolute no no.

KingscoteStaff · 10/05/2020 20:02

If you can meet 1 person from another household in a park at social distance, can you play tennis?

Mlou32 · 10/05/2020 20:02

Genuine question, why are people confused by what he said?

Crinkle77 · 10/05/2020 20:02

Pretty clear to me too.

Glower · 10/05/2020 20:04

Hearhooves

He did mention secondary schools!

‘Our ambition is that secondary pupils facing exams next year will get at least some time with their teachers before the holidays. ’

Derbygerbil · 10/05/2020 20:04

If a load of people can work on a construction site then yes I'm going to see my daughter and parents that I haven't seen for weeks.

Construction sites have largely been open through the lockdown if they can socially distance.
