Not that it matters to me personally, being in Scotland but that was just the biggest load of waffley waffle.
Not even a mention of meeting other households.

Can't stand the man or anything he does or says.
But, I got it. It was crystal clear.
All the things he didn't mention aren't part of this plan, so asking "what about" is futile because he doesn't have the answers to that next phase yet.
You know what you can do, you know what you can't do.

EssentialHummus · 10/05/2020 19:47

It's totally clear. Exercise, households, 2 metres, garden centres, waffle waffle, this is deliberately vague so that when a few thousand more people die needlessly we can blame the general public rather than our inability to govern with any credibility.

tenterden · 10/05/2020 19:47

Boris exact words were "You can drive to other destinations."

Jodri · 10/05/2020 19:47

I disagree crimples and I’m in Scotland too;
I thought Boris was clear in his message.
Nicola sturgeon says stay at home but you can exercise (but only walking, cycling or running. how about horseriding? I have seen riders out but thought that was a no-no) more than once a day, and no sitting down while out: you could argue that she was being a bit confusing in that respect. I hope Scotland’s economy doesn’t get left behind.

mynameiscalypso · 10/05/2020 19:47

He definitely mentioned Years 10 and 12 going back.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 10/05/2020 19:47

One thing for certain... if theres even a hint of nice weather next week the parks and beaches will be packed.

Choccyp1g · 10/05/2020 19:47

The thing is, seeing family doesn't involve spending money.

But it would seem to be OK to meet your family at a restaurant. At separate tables.

Whitestick · 10/05/2020 19:48

You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 10/05/2020 19:48

Basically you can go to work and drive to where you want, schools back in June, bars and restaurants from July? That’s what I took from it. You can go where you want as long as you social distance? Hopefully get some clarification tomorrow!

Chloemol · 10/05/2020 19:48

It was very clear, re watch it in iPlayer

Social distancing is still in place, you can exercise more than once a day but only in family groups, no mixing, you can go to work if you can’t work from home and your employers have made social distancing possible, you can sun bath and sit in parks observing social distancing
Garden centre will open from Wednesday observing social distancing

There is now a Covid alarm scale. As we are still nearly close to r1 we need to maintain lockdown until end May, at which point primary schools MAY start to go back, more shops MAY open. In July, depending on where we are restaurants MAY open.

In the meantime social distancing is to be observed at all times, and no mixing of households as the majority remain in Lockdown

At least that’s what I gleaned from listening, seems clear to me

LoudBatPerson · 10/05/2020 19:49

Boris clearly said in the speech that you can be outside as much as you like, sitting in park, playing sport but only with members of your household.

So no, the rules concerning socialising/excerpting with people outside of your household haven't changed yet. They may soon, but right now you still need to stay within household groups.

The full document comes out to morrow. That might include more details on when households may be able to mix.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/05/2020 19:49

It's all very vague and I wouldn't bank on anything definitely happening. He made it clear that things will only progress if infection rates stay down. If we follow Germany then rates of infection will go up so scope for them to roll back if they need to.

Choccyp1g · 10/05/2020 19:50

As usual, it is putting profits before people.

Friday's briefing effectively had a commercial break when they listed, Costa, Starbucks, MacDonalds etc. as places that can do takeaways.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 10/05/2020 19:50

Playing sports is with household members, not family members. Link to the speech transcript for those who've already forgotten what was said www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-address-to-the-nation-on-coronavirus-10-may-2020

SauvignonBlanche · 10/05/2020 19:50

I just want to see my DS, I miss him so much it hurts but he’s an hour’s drive away. Sad

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 10/05/2020 19:50

I'm not sure, apart from sitting on a park bench, what I can do now that I couldn't yesterday. And go out for exercise more than once.

I work from home but know that non essential businesses were never prevented from operating so it's not even like that has really changed.

Basically they are in a corner as if they really lifted the restrictions they'd be back where they started in no time, but they cannot afford the furlough scheme much longer, hence the need to maintain the lockdown but encourage people to work.

A lot of businesses will struggle anyway as anything customer facing will have to do social distancing and may not be profitable/operational and no one is spending any money anyway. And that's not even taking into account those people who need to get to work on public transport and cannot drive/cycle/walk in.

Shit show.

Lumene · 10/05/2020 19:51

He did mention years 10 and 12 secondary school, and newspapers seem to have been briefed the rest of secondary won’t be back before September.

Why the fuck he is telling the guardian not the public he just addressed directly, fuck knows.

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 19:51

I thought he was clear, people just don’t like they we can’t see friends and family. Hopefully that will be addressed in a couple of weeks. We obviously can’r relax everything at the sane time and he needs to get people back to work.

Hollyhead · 10/05/2020 19:51

Well you could go to a park with other households but stay 2m away - so you could have a picnic and shout across at each other but who really wants to do that?!

NerdImmunity · 10/05/2020 19:52

I thought it was quite clear that you cannot visit family as you can't mix households. You can just exercise a bit more and basically spend more time outdoors such as sunbathing/sitting in the park but you'd need to social distance - ie even outdoors you still can't mix households and would need to stay 2m away.

If you went to the park and sat down and your friends happened to be there too sat at least 2m away I think that's fine. As you're allowed out but still need to social distance.

Not sure what's so confusing?

tenterden · 10/05/2020 19:52

My friend with a motor home is delighted - she will be off by the end of the week.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 10/05/2020 19:52

Presumably people can now visit second homes or weekend homes. So can the non-second-home-owners go and stay in self catering cottages?

Sadie789 · 10/05/2020 19:53

It was crystal clear to me, and I think it’s a sensible well rounded plan.

I can’t be the only one sick of the constant whinging, sniping, politically driven pipes and moans from people about absolutely every single thing to do with this crisis.

There are 66 million people in this country and you can’t please all of them, especially in the midst of an unprecedented worldwide shutdown.

Lalalaboring · 10/05/2020 19:53

I found it pretty clear too. So did my friends and family.

Choccyp1g · 10/05/2020 19:54

Actually, my previous post is wrong, the restaurants etc only MIGHT be open at some point in the future.
