Not that it matters to me personally, being in Scotland but that was just the biggest load of waffley waffle.
Not even a mention of meeting other households.

Hairdressers
Dentists
Cinemas
Theatres
Nail salons etc?

They are jobs you can't do from home, so can they go back to work now then?

He said if you can do your job safely you could go back. Of all of those only cinemas I would think could even consider it. You can't stay socially distanced in all the other places.

Cinemas would have to have blocked off seats like buses, but it would depend on their layout as you might only be able to have one person/household per row because you couldn't have them brushing past another household to go to the loo mid film.

Yawnyoureboringme · 10/05/2020 20:14

Not sure why people are being so rude about others not understanding, does calling people “dense” or “thick” make you feel superior?
People don’t understand if they need to go back to work this week, that’s the main issue. It also brings up the issue of childcare, which wasn’t mentioned.
The message was go back to work if you can’t work from home, so does that mean places like hairdressers or McDonald’s go back? Because obviously they can’t do that from home

cptartapp · 10/05/2020 20:14

Most year 12's finish for summer mid June anyway. DS does. Can't see him going back before September.

BruceAndNosh · 10/05/2020 20:14

Any / all work is still subject to social distancing guidelines.
Which I can't see a nail technician able to adhere to.

but an equally non essential Interior Design shop could have customers in (one at a time) and dicuss wallpaper from opposite sides of a desk

ABucketOfShells · 10/05/2020 20:16

I think it’s interesting you can now go to work (DH has been anyway as he’s a nurse) but can’t see family. I can really imagine that’ll sit well with people. So really it’s too soon to return if not essential- but rich peoples pockets.

GabsAlot · 10/05/2020 20:16

i still dont think he shoujld have changed the slogan-it means nothing as not much as changed so why change that now

Aesopfable · 10/05/2020 20:18

Nicola said we could exercise more than once a day too BUT only Wales was ever restricted to once a day. Yes there were guidelines but the by law you could exercise more than once a day all along.

yellowbrickwhorl · 10/05/2020 20:18

Great. So nobody gives a flying toss about answering my reasonable question then.

Crimples · 10/05/2020 20:19

I do understand that the fact that mixing of households wasn’t mentioned therefore meaning no change has taken place.
However I think not categorically spelling that out, or even acknowledging it as something people have been hanging on to hear, is a huge huge mistake.
My feeling is people will take that absence of clarity as a green flag to go ahead & mix.
Time will tell

I think boris spoke alright to be honest. It was pretty clear too me. A Hairdresser can’t safely social distance but an assembly operator in manufacturing can and therefore the latter can work.
He’s trying to stop people going completely over the top and trying to save our economy. People will always argue because nobody is ever happy.
Basically we have the scale and it’s up to us which way we go.

daisymay133 · 10/05/2020 20:20

It was vague and open to misinterpretation

So I can go to work as long as I socially distance from the 50 I work with

Well I’m sorry then I can go meet my family and keep 2m from them then🙈

BessMarvin · 10/05/2020 20:21

The BBC website says
You can meet one person from outside your own household if you stay two metres apart
So, you can sit next to a single friend in the park, but you must socially distance

SpeedofaSloth · 10/05/2020 20:22

I thought it was clear, TBH.

Feelinghistoric · 10/05/2020 20:22

The fundamental problem with taking your child to hug their grandmother is that there is literally no way the government can say it’s safe. Until there is a vaccine or a proper antigen case, they literally can’t know on an individual basis. I don’t see why people can’t understand this. How do you expect the government to be able to tell you it’s safe? I’m genuinely confused.

Crimples · 10/05/2020 20:22

@yellowbrickwhorl
Basically, waffle waffle, thump fist, shake fist.
Sit on a bench
Sunbathe
Go to work (if you can)
Walk or cycle there
Erm....... Confused

It seemed to me that more things had been planned but that they’ve been delayed so he was trying to stretch out the briefing but basically saying that nothing’s changed...

lyralalala · 10/05/2020 20:23

@yellowbrickwhorl It's summarised, and detailed, on every news site. It would be much quicker for you to look there than someone type it all out

imsooverthisdrama · 10/05/2020 20:23

Where does it say that ? @BessMarvin
Bojo said only exercise with your own household.

Tonii1985 · 10/05/2020 20:24

I understand that we can't mix with other households yet, what I don't understand is where it will come - stage 2 or 3? It wasn't even mentioned. We'll be able to go to the pub in July but can my parents see my daughter for her birthday in August? Still none the wiser.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 10/05/2020 20:24

I feel like I must have watched something entirely different to most of you. I thought it was well thought out, sensible and perfectly clear. He explained the nature of the plan going forward, with the potential to ease measures based on ongoing risk levels, but stuck to the message that we all need to work together in this to minimise spread as far as possible whilst protecting the essential running of the country.

JinglingHellsBells · 10/05/2020 20:24

@Crimples Do you think people look to pick fault just for fun or for the sake of it? (to be political.)

It was clear enough to me.

Not a lot has changed except -

time allowed to exercise - increased
return to work if at all possible and safe

Everything else stays as it was.

Yawnyoureboringme · 10/05/2020 20:24

@yellowbrickwhorl no

EmpressSuiko · 10/05/2020 20:24

@tenterden he meant instead of staying close to home for exercise you can now drive to a local park/outdoor space, he did not say you can pack up for things for a weekend away and anyone found doing so will hopefully get slapped with a huge fine now rather than a £60 one.

Daisydoesnt · 10/05/2020 20:25

Every interaction we have with other people will have a (possibly very very) small risk associated with it. Therefore we can't reintroduce social interactions, meeting family, and going back to work, all at the same time.

I miss my family terribly, like everyone else, but even I can see that's it more important that we get the economy going in some way as soon as possible. We cannot prioritise visiting family over going back to work, that just wouldn't be the sensible or right thing to do.

tenterden · 10/05/2020 20:25

but if you can drive you can go anywhere.
