So basically the government are removing themselves?

So Boris has just tweeted what I presume is going to be announced later. To me it is the government removing the responsibility from themselves so that they can blame to public when a second wave occurs. All very vague and unhelpful!

So basically the government are removing themselves?

Over 30,000 people are dead I say Boris is well due a "bashing". Not because I'm a whingey Labour supporter, but because this government has thoroughly shit the bed.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/05/2020 16:05

It is basically what Sweden are doing but worse becasue we closed things half heartedly and we have no trust in the government so many people now won't go back to cafes and shops so the damage to business has been done.

It has been half arsed all the way. Other European countries have closed down properly, or like Sweden they have relied on individual action from the beginning. In the UK it has been a mess with the government being very reactive instead of proactive

YABU

ProseccoSupernova · 10/05/2020 16:06

There are some seriously dim people who don’t understand what ‘stay alert’ means in this situation.

It means be generally aware of your surroundings; act with caution, don’t mingle with strangers, cover your mouth, wash your hands. It’s really not that fucking difficult and people should take some responsibility for themselves rather than needing everything spelt out.

BolloxtoGender · 10/05/2020 16:06

Absolutely

justasking111 · 10/05/2020 16:07

I shall wait until Boris speaks and then comment. Wales has spoken and its a load of gobbledegook. Hoping England will be a bit clearer.

BruceAndNosh · 10/05/2020 16:07

If they remove Stay Home as the tagline, I would assume it meant that section 6 of Coronavirus Act would be amended but you're saying Number 10 is saying Stay Home still applies?
If I'm Staying Home why the heck do I suddenly need to Stay Alert?
What have I been missing over the last 7 weeks... Am I now at danger of falling down stairs if i don't stay alert?
Seriously confusing.

OneandTwenty · 10/05/2020 16:07

what's new? That has been the message from day 1.

They have mainly been leaving it to people. The chose not to enforce a strict lockdown and force people to stay home. Have you only just noticed?

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 16:08

@BruceAndNosh apparently you have to stay alert whilst remaining at home Hmm I will set up a watchtower for 24/7 patrols

But is our own personal responsibility . The guidance. Annoy possibly cover every single individual circumstance , everyone needs to apply a set of general guidance rules to their specific circumstances .

This whole situation has illustrated how poor people’s general level of scientific understanding is ( in comparison to Germany for example) , how difficult they find understanding the mathematical concepts behind risk , how poor their critical thinking skills are and most of all how bad they are at taking responsibility for their own actions .

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 16:09

@Peaseblossom22 according to BBC news Germany have just announced they have a massive increase in cases following the relaxation of measures.

OP posts:
BruceAndNosh · 10/05/2020 16:10

@bumblingbovine49 Righto so I need to Stay Home but still go out for a coffee in an alert fashion?

ProseccoSupernova · 10/05/2020 16:11

peaseblossom22 ... spot on.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/05/2020 16:11

Yabu, people shouldn’t need to be spoon fed on this. Take some responsibility.

Mikki2019 · 10/05/2020 16:12

@ThroughThickAndThin01 totally

CrowCat · 10/05/2020 16:13

Bizarrely the majority of us can use common sense. Who knew.

The lockdown happened because we weren't prepared for the first wave, because the government ignored the warnings. The lockdown gave them time to build the nightingales so that when lockdown was inevitably eased (because it has to be!!) they'd be prepared for the second wave.

The majority of people adhered to the guidelines and that was enough to slow the spread. The guidelines were sufficiently vague so that they'd be interpreted different ways. Those who were the most frightened could interpret them rigidly, and those who were less frightened could interpret them in a slightly more relaxed manner meaning the chance of transmission was there but nothing too outrageous.

Lockdown only works for X amount of time, 3-4 weeks usually. The fact that it's been 7 weeks now is just beyond stupid.

Daffodil101 · 10/05/2020 16:13

🙄

nellodee · 10/05/2020 16:15

I see the Dunning-Kruger effect on these threads all the time.

Daffodil101 · 10/05/2020 16:15

I’ll be the first to admit, when this kicked off, o wanted the grown ups to come and sort it out.

Then I realised I AM a grown up. I can take some level of responsibility for myself and my family.

Again, who knew?

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 16:15

My god, would you rather a personlised thesis?

Exactly. For normal intelligent people 'stay alert' does not need translating. the virus has been here long enough for people to know what they need to do to protect themselves.

Frouby · 10/05/2020 16:15

Thing is though people can make their own choices as to where they go and who they see. You can't lock 66 million people up forever. You can't tell everyone they can go to work but can't see friends and family. It's either work or lockdown.

We all need to be back at work asap. Otherwise a deadly virus will look like an attractive prospect in a few months time when the food, energy, infrastructures all start running out. I'd rather take my chances with a virus that kills a very tiny minority of the population than have a large %of the population go through a recession so severe it makes 2008 look like the 3rd week in January.

And you still have people out at work anyway. Dh is back at work and has been since after Easter. Lots of industries never stopped and tbh, the resentment between the furloughed and non furloughed people I know is simmering away.

There isn't actually that many places to go. People are out and about 'exercising' anyway. If the poor fuckers want to sit and have a picnic doesn't make much difference. There might be an influx of house parties/bbqs etc over summer but the majority of the population will self isolate when necessary. And lots of people didn't seem to stop anyway.

And yes cases might be higher and deaths might be higher in the UK but I don't think we will be able to compare anything properly for a good few years anyway. The lockdown was to protect the NHS and that seems to be working so far and we have the Nightingale hospitals to use anyway.

Snowjive2 · 10/05/2020 16:16

And he should not release such vague, ambiguous slogans via pre-recorded message, ducking questions. Rumours abound that being he’s hating being PM - far more work and responsibility than he expected and far beyond his abilities and those of his cabinet of incompetents. It’s government by Alan Partridge.

BolloxtoGender · 10/05/2020 16:16

For me, Stay Alert is fine, it's clear what I have to do in my particular circumstances. Some people choose to interpret 'Stay Home' as invite friends over, and have BBQ in the sunshine. As PP say, personal responsibility and risk assessment comes into this.

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 16:16

@Daffodil101 the same way Germany has just reported a massive increase of infections following a relaxing of rules... and here I was thinking there were adults in Germany too!

OP posts:
GabsAlot · 10/05/2020 16:17

i think the stay alert slogan is pathetic-i cant see the bloody virus

i wasnt going to stop sd myself but i dont think means anythng
