So basically the government are removing themselves?

So Boris has just tweeted what I presume is going to be announced later. To me it is the government removing the responsibility from themselves so that they can blame to public when a second wave occurs. All very vague and unhelpful!

So basically the government are removing themselves?

Nothing surprises me any more. We're one of the worst countries in Europe for handling it and everyone just seems fine with that. Sad

Shelby2010 · 10/05/2020 15:42

Actually is the ‘Stay Alert’ bit actually referring to us all downloading the new virus tracking app? Otherwise it’s a pretty pointless slogan - even Stay Apart would have been better!

Littleposh · 10/05/2020 15:42

What would you prefer??

zafferana · 10/05/2020 15:42

It is a clear move towards the first idea which was herd immunity.

Of course it is - because there is no other way for us to return to anything approaching normalcy until a vaccine is developed and rolled out - and that's at least a year away.

Do you really think we should all be locked in our homes for 12-18 months when the risk to 80% of us is minimal?

NewAccountForCorona · 10/05/2020 15:43

WTF did tweeting become a replacement for the government giving proper guidance and talking to people?

He's getting as bad as Trump.

Surely he can just stand up and tell people the facts. Give guidance as to what behaviour is helpful and what isn't. Stop just tweeting slogans.

mildlymiffed · 10/05/2020 15:44

... they're running before they can walk imo.

  • has the contact tracing app been launched for everyone? Is the manual contact tracing system ready to handle an increase in cases.
  • are unions signed up to workforces returning?
  • are schools prepared to receive any students back?
  • have council expended the funds to expand cycle ways/walk ways in town centres.

Answer to all the above is no. So why put things back into people's hands? As I say "be alert" isn't a behavioural message. Lunacy. At this rate the population of the UK will be the laughing stock of the world, and won't be allowed to travel to other countries for many many months to come.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 10/05/2020 15:45

"Many people simply do not understand the damage to our economy."

Oh don't be silly. The truth is the economy is already completely fucked anyway.

Chloemol · 10/05/2020 15:49

Why bother posting something like this and getting everyone speculating and asking if it means lockdown is lifted. Just wait until 7pm and see what he says, then post about it

Posts like this are not helpful

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 15:49

@Chloemol then Boris should not have posted this from his official account before his address at 7

OP posts:
JacobReesMogadishu · 10/05/2020 15:51

So does that mean the pubs and gyms can open next week as long as people wash their hands and stay 2m apart from each other?

KaptenKrusty · 10/05/2020 15:54

You’ll find out at 7 like everyone else @JacobReesMogadishu

stardance · 10/05/2020 15:54

What does it mean by stay alert? Alert to what exactly. You can't see the virus!

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 10/05/2020 15:54

To all the PP who are saying "oh well, people are starting to get fed up/the government can't nanny us forever"..

Cool, but there is the small matter of an international pandemic at the minute. But by all means, if you're getting fed up then go on out and let's hope you don't need NHS care when an inevitable second spike happens. Good luck!

SoloMummy · 10/05/2020 15:55

Find the usage of the term, alert, totally inappropriate when talking of an invisible pandemic!

Definition of alert is quick to notice any unusual and potentially dangerous or difficult circumstances; vigilant.

So what we stay alert to when we do get symptoms, because for most that is now an inevitability if it's business as usual. With Boris and Co. Safe in the knowledge they're OK as they got the treatment when they needed it, but the next wave could kill Many times more than this wave has....

koffeetoast · 10/05/2020 15:56

I definitely think this is the herd immunity approach, you are right OP. I will be working from home and not sending my child to nursery for as long as possible. If this is the message for tonight, my feeling is everyone will interpret it as they please and lead to a second peak.

helpfulperson · 10/05/2020 15:56

Well thank goodness at least NS has been clear on what will be happening with us north of the border.

Stay at home as much as possible then other activities/sectors coming back as guidance is developed. Simple, and easy to understand.

VenusTiger · 10/05/2020 15:57

My god, would you rather a personlised thesis? People who don't like our govt/PM will continue to bitch about everything they do all the live long day - we get it - do something else now, it's tiresome.

ModernMilli · 10/05/2020 15:57

Number 10 has clarified that it still means stay at home.
Wales is still saying stay at home and announced another three weeks lockdown to be reviewed in 3 weeks time. Meanwhile I have seen in the news that China may have possible new cases and Germany has seen a rise. Care homes have also seen a rise in UK .

acidburning · 10/05/2020 15:59

He's not going to get much specific info out in 10 mins - there will be many questions following this but yes, it does read like lockdown is over without actually officially saying so and it's all in our hands now. Which is good to a point I suppose. I'm actually thinking I can see my family a lot sooner than I thought and hopefully schools will go back quicker than anticipated.

ModernMilli · 10/05/2020 16:00

Its not over, thats not what he is saying.

Mikki2019 · 10/05/2020 16:01

Thank goodness common sense at last

They are following the Swedish sensible approach

Dodgytrousers · 10/05/2020 16:02

No op. It's not that.

To you maybe but it isn't that they're " removing themselves". 🙄🙄🙄

Place your bets people that this is another bash Boris thread from a Labour supporter/ activist.

It's getting boring now.

mildlymiffed · 10/05/2020 16:03

@venustiger yes- I think the population deserve clear guidance (or a personalised thesis) as you call it... they've just sacrificed the last 7 weeks of their freedom in lockdown. So, for that not to be wasted, yes- I want to know what "being guided by the science" actually looks like next- as opposed to a slogan "stay alert" that seems to mean very very little. Let's review at 7pm eh?!

princesstwinkle · 10/05/2020 16:04

@Dodgytrousers I'm not a labour supporter - I'm not particularly fond of Boris.

However...my parents are very very hardcore Tory and even they have concerns.

Spirali · 10/05/2020 16:04

Honestly, that seems to be what most people have been doing since lockdown started anyway..
