How do I stay calm when so many either have coronaphobia or are enjoying lockdown too much?

Out for a walk last night and saw a neighbour who’s furloughed. She took pleasure in saying what a great time she’s having and hoping things carry on like this for a lot longer yet. She doesn’t think she should go back to work anytime soon as she has to meet people face to face and she doesn’t want to catch it. She’s in her 30s, slim and white.
Get back and speak to SIL who won’t be sending dnephew to school if they open in June ‘because children are dying too’ I’m getting so annoyed at the attitude of so many stupid people and it’s like banging my head against a brick wall. I feel like I’ve lost all control of my life and it’s going to carry on forever. Does anyone else know what I mean?Sad

*why do you say

Bluntness100 · 09/05/2020 15:37

Op, it doesn’t matter when your neighbour thinks she should go back to work, the primary decision is with her employers not her. They will decide when to reopen and when she should go back , unless the government says otherwise Ie she’s in social or airline industry . The employer decides when to reopen and if to furlough or not. Her decision is then to resign or to work if they reopen. Furlough isn’t a right. She doesn’t get to say well I think I shouldn’t go back, keep me furloughed.

And as for your sister in law, homeschooling is an option, as it sledge has been.

I agree too many are enjoying this, living their best lives, but they need to remember the continuation of furlough choice is not theirs to make. It’d their employers.

In my "silly little bubble"ie that is out here in Real Life there is insulin and vaccines and medicines and heart transplants and premature baby units and ICU and immunotherapy. And actual science, where nature is crossed everyday.

None of those thing will save you from covid so completly irrelevant. And people still die dispite those things. We are not gods, medicine can only do so much.

CaliforniaMountainSnake · 09/05/2020 16:12

you say that New Zealand have to shut their borders forever. Why? They could trade and open travel with Australia with continued testing. Quarantine new arrivals. Open borders further when there are proven antiviral drugs and potentially a vaccine

Would you go on holiday to New Zealand knowing you'll have to spend 2 weeks in quarantine? Or that you may be sent home if you had been carrying a virus you didn't know you had. And what if the baggage carriers put the virus on your luggage. So you need your luggage to be quarantined.
How can you quarantine perishable food? Where do you keep all the goods while they are being quarantined for months? It just doesn't work.

There may never be a treatment or a vaccine. We don't have either of those things for the cold. So then what. Either they isolate themselves from the rest of the world that has covid19 circulating the population or you let the covid infection into your population. Which you may as well have just done while everyone else did it.

And there is no evidence you don't gain immunity. The evidence so far points to a gradually waining immunity, the same as with other SARS viruses. Saying we won't get immunity is pure scare mongering.

Viruses do mutate, yes. But usually eventually to become less deadly. Our immune systems also adapt to better fight the virus.
So somthing like Spanish flu, which killed millions, eventually becomes a normal seasonal infection that kills the old a weak each year and has little to no effect on the majority of the population.

Nope you missed the point Snake. Never mind.

You crack on with your 'natural way' where the weak and old die. And anyone who disagrees is in "silly little bubble" . Survival of the fittest etc Cos it's 'natural'. it's just flu. blah blah.

And all those countries who went into lockdown wow!

DianaT1969 · 09/05/2020 17:18

@California - you are really reaching with your scenarios. Food packed in my luggage which may have the virus on it on my very expensive holiday to NZ this summer 🤣.
There are Scandinavian countries in a similar position to NZ (exception of Sweden). They locked down early, tested a lot and kept deaths low. They'll find ways to keep their economies going, just as NZ will. As I said, effective antiviral drugs will be a game changer. Hopefully a vaccine too.

CaliforniaMountainSnake · 09/05/2020 18:06

But what if there is no vaccine or anti viral drugs. We're not actually very good at fighting viruses medically. For most the treatment is support the body and hope the immune system wins.

What I'm saying is for a virus as contagious as covid, that will be present in nearly every country in the world - its not practical to try and keep single contries completely covid free. Not unless they want to stop all trade and travel.

Covid could be living on goods imported into the country. It could be living on peoples luggage. In their handbags, on their money, phones laptops, even if they are not ill will it themselves. So even if you test people, it could still get in. If you choose to quarantine everyone, realistically no one is going to come to your country. So you've lost tourist trade.

Then when covid gets in, as it inevitably will, you have to put your country in lockdown all over again. And this process will go on again and agian and again. Damaging lives, finances, the economy, education. When all the other contries have herd immunity and are back to normal.

Nice brag.

I said on your luggage, as in the outside, the handles. Bits that the baggage handler will touch, thus picking up the virus. Do you know how many people will touch your bag both on departure and at arrival on your "very expensive" holiday to New Zealand.

I was referring to food being imported. You know how we import New Zealand lamb. They import food from other contries too. Not just your pack lunch.

And how many people are going to risk going on a "very expensive" holiday to new Zealand when they may be put into quarantine or sent home because they are carrying covid.

DianaT1969 · 09/05/2020 19:05

Nice brag.

Gosh, you don't get sarcasm either. You talked about travelling to NZ. If there are flights they will be incredibly expensive. Nobody is going on holiday to NZ right now. That was my point.
I'm one of Rishi's 5% freelancers who fell through the cracks. So definitely no expensive holidays for me for at least a couple of years.
I promise not to nuance or sarcasm in any threads with you going forward. 👍

Theislands · 10/05/2020 18:56

New Zealand closed their borders months ago and so far I don't see anyone starving to death? Most fresh produce is local and generally most food is from within the country as it makes little sense to fly it in. Tourism will be the real issue but frankly right now no one can go anywhere in the world for a holiday. NZ can still export to the rest of the world. New Zealand have brought themselves precious time and I think are in the best position possible.

'coronaphobia'? Stop reading the Fail and maybe you'll feel calmer.
