So outbreaks are only in care homes and hospitals. What am I missing?

In the governments press conference yesterday they said infection rates remain high because of outbreaks in two places: care homes and hospitals. They said transmission within the community was small and well below R1.

So why can't we contain care homes and hospitals and get on with our lives now??

VettiyaIruken · 08/05/2020 07:13

How do we contain the staff who work there?

AnyFucker · 08/05/2020 07:15

A large proportion of the general poulation work in those places. Should we lock them all in together ?

You are certainly missing something Smile

rosie1959 · 08/05/2020 07:15

I expect unless they locked down hospitals and care homes ie the staff stay there and dont come out into the community the virus has chance to spread

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 08/05/2020 07:22

Great, let's shut both hospitals and care homes. Families can come and collect their loved ones to continue their care at home. If patients don't have a family capable of that, oh dear, that's a shame.

You do realise care homes are already in lockdown and it's impossible to lock down hospitals??

rosie1959 · 08/05/2020 07:25

I did see a care home in the Isle of Wight did exactly that. The staff left their families and moved in

MamaKarmaLlama · 08/05/2020 07:29

I wouldn’t listen to a word this government says. It’s all bluff and bullshit.

ilovebagpuss · 08/05/2020 07:33

My care home has nowhere to put staff even if they wanted to move in which we don’t. My own children would die if I abandon them. Arf at everyone thinking all care home workers can just pack a bag and move into some mythical onsite hotel and abandon their home responsibilities. It’s half staffed by agency staff anyway as half the usual staff are off isolating/ill/anxiety/pregnant etc so unless you can get hundreds of different agency staff to move in as well it’s all pointless.

LastTrainEast · 08/05/2020 07:35

If we were not on lockdown then offices, shops, schools, buses etc would the places where outbreaks occurred.

MamaKarmaLlama all governments or just those run by the NWO lizards?

Derbygerbil · 08/05/2020 07:35

So why can't we contain care homes and hospitals and get on with our lives now??

How would you contain care homes and hospitals? You make it sound so simple, but unless we literally sealed them off, requiring all hospital and care home staff to report for duty, and then seal them off on their sites for weeks. Really?

And then there are all the other consequences of sealing off hospitals:

Need chemo etc. Tough, the hospital’s been quarantined, @mayoral wants to get on with her life now

Had a heart attack? Sorry, paramedics have had to stay home. We can’t risk them going in and out of hospital with sick and injured people!

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/05/2020 07:35

Yeh let’s lock them all up and throw away the key.

mynameiscalypso · 08/05/2020 07:36

I don't think we can lock them down for all the reasons pp have stated but I can't believe that there's nothing that can be done to reduce the transmission rate substantially.

mayoral · 08/05/2020 07:36

All the hotels in the country are empty, can't care home staff and hospital staff be housed there as an option? Test them everyday? Isolate them if they're showing symptoms? Can't be that difficult??

OP posts:
WiseUpJanetWeiss · 08/05/2020 07:39

Yes that’s an excellent plan.

All hospital staff can move in to work and isolate there with the patients. It doesn’t matter that this puts them at elevated risk or curtails their freedoms, because none of them have families and everyone who works for the NHS signed up to put their lives at risk.

When this is over and all the hospital staff have had Covid-19 it won’t matter that a significant proportion of them have died or have been left with long term health problems, because it’s really easy, cheap and quick to train highly skilled medical staff.

Frequency · 08/05/2020 07:39

The care home I work in also has nowhere for staff to sleep plus we all have family/children/other caring duties/2nd jobs etc. Not to mention the fact that we have made it very clear to management when the idea was bandied about that if we get “locked in“ we'll be following each other out of the staff room window in a dating escape plan.

Care is hard enough as it is without not being able to leave the building and go home to decompress. I imagine the same is true for hospital staff.

Artus · 08/05/2020 07:40

I don't think you have thought this through......

MamaKarmaLlama · 08/05/2020 07:40

@LastTrainEast this government in the UK. The one with the lying bastard at its helm.

Derbygerbil · 08/05/2020 07:41

@ilovebagpuss

Exactly. There may have been the odd care homes out of thousands that have done this, but it’s completely impractical and impossible.

Spied · 08/05/2020 07:41

I work in a care home.
Every. Single. Care home in my town is battling an outbreak.
The amount of people it takes to 'run' a care home efficiently is huge.
People just think of the nurses and carers but there's domestic staff, maintenance staff, laundry staff, kitchen staff, activities coordinators as well as management and reception manning the phone (never stops with calls from worried relatives).
We all live in the community. Most of us have families. We need to go shopping.
We can't be contained.

cantdothisnow1 · 08/05/2020 07:42

mayoral

No you can't just lock up and remove the human rights of key workers so everyone else can. be free.

EricaNernie · 08/05/2020 07:42

my nearest care home at least some of the staff moved in, after deaths of residents, for a couple of weeks.
but ,as pointed out, staff have families, and there is not always somewhere to stay

justdontatme · 08/05/2020 07:42

would you offer any sort of recompense to workers for the disruption to their family lives @mayoral?

Readytogogogo · 08/05/2020 07:43

So anyone who works in a hospital or care home doesn't see their family for the foreseeable future? So that you can get on with your life? What makes you so special?

Dozer · 08/05/2020 07:43

So for (for many) minimum wage, in addition to taking huge risks working, key workers should leave their families for months?

Who would provide catering, washing and cleaning in these hotels? Who would pay?

PestymcPestFace · 08/05/2020 07:44

Approximately 418,000 people live in care homes (Laing and Buisson survey 2016). This is 4% of the total population aged 65 years and over, rising to 15% of those aged 85 or more.

That's less than 1% of the country's population and you believe that this small group is skewing the statistics Hmm

Me thinks the ministers are telling slight porkies, listen to the scientists.

Uk cases have plateaued. London cases have dropped. Out of London cases are rising.

They really don't have a clue about community cases.

Alone07 · 08/05/2020 07:44

My mums care home has a house next door that houses a lot of the staff already.
It is still riddled with coronavirus, didn't help that at the beginning they were letting the vulnerable discharge from hospital into care homes without testing them first.
