Changes to lockdown from Monday?

I know this is pure speculation, but any predictions about changes from next Monday?

Maybe more outdoor exercise allowed. Like being able to go to the Lake District/snowdonia and go for a walk. I live an hour from a national park and don’t think I’m currently allowed to drive there.

Sosadandempty · 06/05/2020 17:11

(I agree with the pp who said that there were so many new cases yesterday)

namechangenumber2 · 06/05/2020 17:11

I'm hoping that DS1 will be able to meet up with his friend to walk our dog ( obviously whilst socially distancing!). DH will continue to WFH whatever happens, my job won't start back for a while and DS2 is doing ok with his home schooling. We're all pretty introverted so happy in our little bubble. DS1 is much more sociable, he's yr 11 so no work to get on with. He'd love the company of another teenager. He's become a bit of a shell of himself and I'm worried about that.

Whether this is what happens though, I don't know!

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 06/05/2020 17:11

I am in Wales so would like to be able to drive for exercise in line with England. Would also love it if play parks reopened but I doubt that. Would be so amazing if we could drive the 10 minutes to our local boating lake and have a proper walk and a play in the park for DS.

Would also love it if some socialisation is allowed, a playdate for DS would be epic.

DH would love a McDonalds!

At the moment, the vast majority of people are advised in the government guidelines to stay local and not to travel to the National Parks and coast to visit, stay at second homes or 'exercise'. If this guidance is lifted by the PM anytime soon and especially as early as Monday, it would be devastating to rural and coastal communities who are trying to keep a lid on infection rates with very limited resources. There is already a high level of concern and some anger about those who are still insisting on visiting from surrounding towns, cities or further afield and ignoring the guidance. I hope that the PM does not sell rural and coastal communities out, and that most people continue to wait to visit until it is safe to do so and a warm welcome can be assured from residents, businesses, mountain rescue and the police.

Relaxing the 'stay local' message anytime soon would seem at odds with the statistics around infections and deaths. It would seem to increase the risk of viral spread, a second wave and alienating rural and coastal communities.

So why is it now ok for different rules for different areas?

LuckyLuckyWoman · 06/05/2020 17:14

I want to be able to see my kids. One is half an hours drive away and the other and hour and half. Even if we could meet up and be socially distant, I'd be happy with that. Social media has been a godsend, but it's not the same

Thirtyrock39 · 06/05/2020 17:16

I think they need to emphasise the need to stay local. My in-laws are convinces they will be able to drive two hours to see us if they introduce social bubbles (no thought to whether I'd want to see my parents twenty mins drive away 🤔) and I've tried to explain that this won't be happening next week

IgnoranceIsStrength · 06/05/2020 17:18

Almost 700 deaths reported today. I know some were historical but that is still so so high. Italy are only just easing and they are in the 200s

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/05/2020 17:20

my wife works in a garden centre has been unfurloughed this week and gone back to work in preparation for re-opening 'soon'

Sosadandempty · 06/05/2020 17:22

This - and Italy are only easing to something approaching our current lockdown.

Bluntness100 · 06/05/2020 17:22

Why do you think Monday is too early when the lock down is to prevent the nhs being breached and they clearly now habe the capacity?

How many empty beds do you need exactly?

Sosadandempty · 06/05/2020 17:22

I do not trust the government to get us safely out or lockdown. At all.

Gatorgator · 06/05/2020 17:22

I’m finding the social bubble idea stressful.
How would we choose?!

Sosadandempty · 06/05/2020 17:22

Of not or

FlyLight · 06/05/2020 17:29

sosad neither do I. 649 deaths again (I know they're not strictly in past 24hrs but it's still that many deaths either way) and the bloody newspapers are going on about how Boris is going to drop the stay at home message and that cafes and even pubs can reopen if they've got gardens from Monday! I know it's media speculation but what the hell is wrong with this country!

sunglasses123 · 06/05/2020 17:32

Its not 649 TODAY! Some of the deaths were weeks/months ago!

ElsieMc · 06/05/2020 17:35

I really hope the dentists reopen. My crown has broken and I look like a hill billy along with my hair which resembles a mullet.

My hairdresser rang and told me that his clients were still expecting him to go to their homes to cut their hair and wanted to check I didn't think he was due at mine. I said of course not and he should remember who was unreasonable when giving out appointments in due course.

Also selfishly I want the dog groomers to reopen. My cocker spaniels resemble Kevin Keegan circa 1970's.

I also hope we can now visit family members. My dd2 is pregnant and I really want to see her.

My gs says that many years are returning to school on the 1st of June, with the exception of his year. Hmmm.

Inaquandry19 · 06/05/2020 17:37

@thecountess sorry not sure how to mention someone on here. There was a massive spike in cases and covid hospital patients in my are in the last week or so. That's proof enough for me.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 06/05/2020 17:38

I think it will have two prongs: restarting the economy, and lifting social restrictions a little bit so as to avoid mass mutiny.

So encouraging industry to re-start, eg construction sites, factories (and trying to mitigate the risks of public transport, possibly recommending masks).

And as experts have said that outdoor interaction is low risk, then allowing people to play sports, have picnics but perhaps with only your household, or sports with only 2 people, eg tennis.

I don't think Boris will want to offend the Conservative heartlands in the countryside by allowing people to go for days out there, sadly. Even though walking outdoors has a miniscule risk of infection.

Small shops might be in the next phase in a few weeks. That's my guess. And schools phasing in from 1st June, but they might not announce that yet (headteachers have said they need 3 weeks notice).

lyralalala · 06/05/2020 17:39

So why is it now ok for different rules for different areas?

The different countries were always going to need different approaches at some point due to a different curve, and even things like the different school holidays will have to come into thinking.

They started with slightly different plans as well. Scotland announced school closures before England. Wales already has slightly different exercise legislation.

They just tried to keep as much as possible on the same page to make it easier and less confusing for people

Abreadsandwich · 06/05/2020 17:40

I think businesses and shops have been told already before general announcements. My sis works in a (chain) shop that is currently closed and they have been given 18th May as reopening.

I think it will be gradual - not everyone back to work on Monday. That's surely a recipe to back to square 1.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 06/05/2020 17:41

Only 331 hospital deaths with CV19 in England as of today. Remember they've added other settings.

Hugglespuffed · 06/05/2020 17:42

Those in Scotland saying you acted too quickly in terms of lockdown. I disagree. You don't want to wait for more deaths before making a lockdown. Those deaths are real people.. it is a good thing that you started lockdown at the same time as England etc... because that means you didn't lose as many lives as you could have if you had waited.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 06/05/2020 17:44

"weepingwillow22 Wed 06-May-20 14:43:30
I think it will be garden centres and outdoor exercise allowed initially."

People already doing outdoor exercise ? and garden centres are open in our area and have been for a couple of weeks with social distancing rules etc
