Let's just hope they use the next three weeks wisely. Priority being getting hold of more PPE, accurate tests, and any drugs or medical equipment needed. If that's possible.

Is PPE something we can make here in the UK? It seems one of the issues is competing with other countries to buy more. Or is the problem not having enough of the raw materials?

LilacTree1 · 07/05/2020 23:41

Today’s NHS data is showing deaths today as just over 50.

Apologies if stating obvious

“ So many carers are having to work in an atmosphere of total fear - they don't know how to care for their elderly patients - they're carers not nurses, who have medical training. Really feel for them”

The only people I’ve known work as carers only really do it because they’re out of other options, it’s a horrible job by the sounds of it. One friend was having to train up new carers after she’d been in the job 8 months.

LilacTree1 · 07/05/2020 23:46

Re the ambulance video

I don’t object to them doing it

But if they want to show consideration, they should share it between themselves, not out it on social media

My father was an HCP, I’m well aware of the dark humour that goes with the job. But posting that and expecting anything other than a backlash...

Keepdistance · 07/05/2020 23:49

What are the raw materials that we dont have though.

Some uk companies probably have actories abroad that might be able to help.

Which other countries arent wearing masks now?

Cases i would estimate as 5x hospitalised.
I dont understand how they know though as millions of kids could have it with few hospitalised but next level millions of parents. Or 100% elderly.

ToffeeYoghurt · 07/05/2020 23:59

I get what you mean Lilac It wasn't the best idea posting it online. I assume it was meant to be private but one of the friendship group forwarded it to someone else. The last thing they wanted, I'm sure, was it ending up in the DM! A harsh lesson learnt.

I couldn't open the link for some reason but I'm assuming the death figure you had is for London? Today's UK wide number was 539.

Longer to recover

LilacTree1 · 08/05/2020 00:14

Toffee

No, the NHS is for England

The NHS figures are much more reliable IMHO, the government are always saying “here’s another 64 we added from 19th April”.

I was hoping this was all on the daily graphs thread?

ToffeeYoghurt · 08/05/2020 00:27

I haven't looked at that thread Lilac I'm trying to ration threads but it sounds interesting. I'll take a look, thanks.

keepdistance it seems it can absolutely knock somebody for six. Weeks and weeks ill. I think it must be worse thinking you're over it then relapsing, several times, than one constant illness? I don't know. Perhaps the respite periods help give people strength to get through the relapse? What a nightmare.

I wonder why some people get the relapse and not others. So much still unknown about this disease.

LilacTree1 · 08/05/2020 00:38

Keepdistance those stories are exactly like when you get a knockout bug. I think some of these people have never been ill before. Lucky them.

changeshermind · 08/05/2020 10:04

The SARS 2 cov seems more sophisticated. The immune system knows its there but is unable to destroy in about 10 days as with bad flu.

middleoftheroad · 08/05/2020 10:40

I complete the Covid Symptom Tracker every day (using the app).

It's just asked me to update my details, presumably based on the fact I am female.
It asked (don't have exact wording)

Have you ever had a period?

Are you still having periods?

How regular are those? (a few choices - I ticked every 3-5 weeks)

Are you currently taking any of the following medication?(long list from the pill to oestrogen, HRT etc).

Can anybody explain why they (the researchers) would want want details on the above?

changeshermind · 08/05/2020 10:42

Because they're idiots

Canklesforankles · 08/05/2020 10:54

There’s a theory that oestrogen May be protective. I think there may be trials of giving oestrogen to men very ill with covid.

weepingwillow22 · 08/05/2020 10:57

covid.joinzoe.com/post/oestrogen-covid
It is part of their research project Researching the effects of hormonal therapies such as HRT or the Pill

changeshermind · 08/05/2020 10:58

So they're actually doing it. Well. That will be interesting.

LilacTree1 · 08/05/2020 11:49

middle “ Can anybody explain why they (the researchers) would want want details on the above?”

Because data of all kinds is worth a fortune and stuff like this will be great for healthcare insurance when there’s no NHS.

Why are you using this thing?

ApricotCrush · 08/05/2020 11:56

Because they're idiots

Why would you say that? These are scientists desperately trying to find out why this dreadful disease is killing more men than women. Pot. Kettle. Black.

changeshermind · 08/05/2020 11:57

Scientists enjoy experimenting rather than use the effective medicines already there

changeshermind · 08/05/2020 11:58

Estrogen is antiinflammtory. So is turmeric.

Keepdistance · 08/05/2020 12:00

Progesterone and inflammation
As an anti-inflammatory agent, progesterone has been shown to reduce the response of natural killer cells, the Th1 cytokine response, as well as other known initiators of inflammation. Progesterone suppresses oestrogen, which is an excitatory hormone, a known initiator of inflammation.

changeshermind · 08/05/2020 12:08

Oh.can you imagine bing a doctor though and being told to stop all treatment and turn your patient into a girl instead

SummerSazz · 08/05/2020 12:10

@changeshermind you are coming across as rather ridiculous Hmm

Keepdistance · 08/05/2020 12:11

I think progesterone trial might work better than oestrogen.
Also anecdotally the 3 women i think may have had CV have pcos. And so hormones imbalanced do not ovulate. And often have vitamin deficiency.

Cv is nothing like flu or a bad illness except maybe glandular fever.
ive been ill a lot but even with asthma the SOB was different and not relieved by ventolin.
Very fast heart beat too. Ive had chest infection before but usually a wet cough which means coughing clears it.
My dc were ill and dd2 coughed for at least 5w. Dd1 still coughing and has decribed having phlegm for the first time ever.n

It is completely different as healthy people do not normally go to hospital needing oxygen do they?
Plus a few people on lungs threads have deteriorated to being in hospital months after initial infection.

Keepdistance · 08/05/2020 12:13

Maybe us women can get on the PoP ? I wonder how many women who had it mildly wsre on the pill?
Also pregnancy could the be relatively protective...
