Today’s report by Which? echoes my Guardian investigation last month: many disabled people are struggling to access food during lockdown, with some forced to break shielding and go to a supermarket because the government’s shut them out

I lost my nan after 4 different nurses visited her home over 2/3 weeks to treat a separate minor illness. None of the nurses had been tested and they had to remove their masks as my nan was deaf and would lip read. She passed away 3 days after testing positive. She was only 70.

PMQ today, BJ announced elements of lockdown will be lifted from Monday, with the specifics due on Sunday. Sounds like it might even be possible for more people to return to work from Monday?

Saucery · 06/05/2020 17:00

It must be horrific to be in that position, Helena, but I wouldn’t blame any HCP who refused to put themselves at risk.

Not even 24 hrs notice? Clusterfucks ahoy!

HeIenaDove · 06/05/2020 17:12

Me neither Saucery.

HeIenaDove · 06/05/2020 17:12

VERY damning report

StrawberryJam200 · 06/05/2020 17:15

Surely the fact it's less than 24 hrs notice @Saucery indicates it'll be relatively minor things, eg get vulnerable children back to school?

StrawberryJam200 · 06/05/2020 17:16

Sorry I meant to tag @UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe

Saucery · 06/05/2020 17:22

With less than 24 hrs notice I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something to do with education. God forbid teachers should be able to plan anything. 🙄 Just like when they closed the schools.
But that’s just a guess, which is all anyone can do until Sunday. For the Ways of Government are both Mysterious and Mystifying where Covid19 is concerned.

DakotaFanny · 06/05/2020 18:04

I think they’ve promised three weeks notice to schools. But like others have said, who the feck knows with this government!

Keepdistance · 06/05/2020 18:59

So sad reading about thar poor 3yo. Her mum was i think 28.
Criminal sending elderly back to care homes without testing.

And to send kids back when it's killing 28yos thats all teachers

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 19:15

Helena I bet the nurses and other HCP who treated Boris had enough PPE.

The way the disabled have been abandoned is a disgrace.

UC was raised to £94 a week but only for new claimants affected by coronavirus. Many already ill and disabled continue to struggle on £20 less.

From the very beginning I was shocked that the government failed to ensure the disabled but not shielded had access to food deliveries.

Unfortunately unless and until more widely read media than the guardian report on this nothing will change. Good though it is they've covered it. Has the BBC said anything? For that matter has Labour? I hope they raise the issue.

HeIenaDove · 06/05/2020 19:37

Easy to see why So it would garner the response of "See UC isnt so bad Dont know why people already on it keep complaining"

@HeIenaDove that's a great development of true. I bought an oxygen monitor about a month ago as I knew what comfort it brought dad to have one with a respiratory disease. I hope that translates to earlier less invasive treatment 🤞

the dutch plan for easing lockdown step by step until september.
was announced with the caveat that they will go back to restrictions if needed.

I think we have such high deaths because they let us get more infected even more than italy because it is worst in our main cities.
So we may well have higher antibodies than many other countries.
But how can we trust they would lockdown again? I think they are likely to let it run through. Due to costs of furlough etc.
Plus with higher immunity comes higher cases still in the community.
I guess they probably dont plan on lockdown again just using the school holidays.

Easilyanxious · 06/05/2020 21:15

Why don't you all just wait until Sunday all second guessing , he's not going to say Sunday oh yes schools will be open tomorrow is he . They have already said schools will be given notice and whatever measures are relaxed they will be tightened back again if there is a big surge , but this virus isn't just disappearing so we have to learn for now how to live with it as such and get back to work and some normality whilst also keeping numbers low , in a crowded busy country that is no easy task
There is no magic wand unfortunately

ToffeeYoghurt · 06/05/2020 22:27

I don't think they could just let it run through. Much as they might want to.

We'd have too large a proportion of the workforce off sick (or dead), some for long periods, all at the same time.

We're relatively fortunate right now. We're still receiving a fair amount of normal service from essential (and not so essential) workers. The difficulties with food delivery slots are nothing compared to the chaos and disruption an unchecked Covid would bring.

It's not just about the deaths. Many people have posted on here about their experiences with Covid. Lots of healthy young people knocked for six for over a month.

Transport workers, power and food supply workers, care staff, teachers and other school staff, clients and customers and colleagues and managers of businesses. All off sick for extended periods.

And then there's our doctors and nurses and other health care workers. Already dying in disproportionate numbers because of the frontline risk and lack of PPE. Nobody would be around to care for the sick (Covid or non Covid).

We'd see devastating economic disruption in addition to countless deaths.

The government has acknowledged this. They've told us they plan repeat lockdowns. I think in this instance they're telling the truth.

UV light does kill viruses. Whether this does remains to be seen.
