Yes i have a feeling of impending doom about the situation here.
Are we literally just going to do this 6?
Imo where tests are taking longer really a bubble should burst after maybe 3 days.
Hump- glad france are doing something at least.
If countries are goibg to insist schools stay open? They really do need to allow masks even for children.
I am so angry with dc HT as i told them they shouldnt be increasing the bubbles to year group as we are waiting on a test. And anyway mine would have been in bubble of 120 all together. But no they have ignored it! And mixed the bubbles.
A friend has a shielding parner i really hope she has decided to take her kid ouf.
Anyway even if parents arent vulnerable then its another 30 having to isolate per positive.
Also i thought we had had covid as i felt so ill in apr sp even if its positive i still think it could just be shedding from before.

Willbob · 15/09/2020 07:01

Two year groups at my sons school were sent home but they don't have to isolate for 14 days just 10 as the child who was positive was last in school last week (only informed school of test result yest, they may have only just got it) but what is really bad is that their parents had been isolating but sent the kids in anyway.

CrunchyCarrot · 15/09/2020 07:47

Thanks for tagging me, @Humphriescushion. I thought this thread had well and truly died a death. I've been a bit distracted by the latest Brexit debacle.

Glad to see some of you still here, sad that the UK appears to be heading into a second wave and that the Govt still isn't handling testing well. Once Universities go back we're even more likely to see more spread.

Hello everyone.
Good to see you all (iyswim, wish there were no need for this thread but it was supremely helpful back in the deep dark days)
Hope you are all OK.
I've namechanged (a lot!) Am in Italy for those who remember. I often think about you all, especially @MurrayTheMonk and hope she is doing OK. Flowers

TheSeedsOfADream · 15/09/2020 08:33

I also still follow the numbers thread but understand little! It's frightening though how the fabulous posters on there have a better grip of the situation than the govt.

Humphriescushion · 15/09/2020 08:34

Hello all. Glad to see some people back.

Yes I remember your very informative posts about Italy @ seeds. Good to see you back. Italy is mangaging to keep a lid on cases very well and I wondering what they are doing which is so successful?

1happyhippie · 15/09/2020 08:38

Hope everyone has managed to stay safe 🙏

It is worrying to see the numbers climbing again and the mess of the testing system.
I work in a carehome and we are tested each week, so far we still have access to them although results are taking longer to get back.
Gone from 2 days to 4 or more!

Augustbreeze · 15/09/2020 08:46

Hi all! Yes like March, although we do know more and I am less personally frightened than I was. (Low risk, and think me and DS had it mildly at end of March).

Anyone hear Priti Patel on R4 this morning? One thing Laura Kuenssberg said in the analysis afterwards was something about care homes possibly needing further measures as cases are beginning to rise in the sector. I couldn't think what further measures they could impose: there's already a somewhat 'delayed'.... plan for weekly testing of staff and residents, I think only some are allowing just one relative to visit occasionally. So would it just be all visitors banned?

1happyhippie · 15/09/2020 08:52

@Augustbreeze there is talk of carehomes going back into lockdown. So no one inside except staff.

TheSeedsOfADream · 15/09/2020 08:53

Hi Humphrey!

I fear we are in the calm before the storm tbh. Schools only went back yesterday in some regions and next week in others. The effect of that will be crucial.

Masks are obligatory 6pm-6am where SD isn't possible (so nightlife basically) and still in shops (though that's at shop's own discretion) I believe (without knowing the science) that that level of compliance has to have had its effect somehow.

Cases are creeping up- in my town we have 10 cases (almost all traced to Malta, Croatia and Greece- testing on re-entry)

We've had a really normal summer- crowded beaches, nightspots etc. I've had teenage guests from the UK over who couldn't believe how normal life was (or that masks were non negotiable)

It's a waiting game now, but I do think we'll end up with a rise in cases that will set off some further restrictions and local lockdowns if necessary. Case of hope for the best prepare for the worst I suppose!

Iirc you are in France? How is it going?

SistemaAddict · 15/09/2020 09:50

Oooh thank you resurrecting this thread! I'm not data minded enough for the other thread Sad I'll catch up over a cup of tea...

Currently self isolating here and on day 10. Ds and I are unwell still. We weren't able to get tests. Dd only managed one day at school before she was off self isolating. We are in Greater Manchester and the rates are climbing alarmingly. 2 weeks ago we were something like 8/100,000 and now we are 44/100,000. I'm very worried as ecv and have no one to help me at all if I get sick enough to be in hospital. I'm already on steroids for my asthma due to whatever virus this is.

No sd at school between parents at drop off and pick up, a one way system that isn't one way. It's no surprise that ds picked up something and gave it me.

Humphriescushion · 15/09/2020 11:14

Thankss seeds, yes i had visitors here as well who could not believe how normal life was ( apart from masks) and that they could go to bars, restaurants etc. Summer was very, very busy and now we are paying the price. Think the gov decided that summer had to happen for the sake of the economy, so i was not surprised when i saw cases rocket here. But Italy seemed to cope so much better and would have had the same summer influx. Fingers crossed it can be contained. Feels like a very different strategy from the uk and would be an intersting study if was not so grim.
Some extra measures brought into my area but very light and i was a bit surprised.
Oh sorry to here that Bercows, is so stressful, stay safe.

TheSeedsOfADream · 15/09/2020 11:30

I may scoop up a few posters and invite them over here as and when if we are resurrecting as this was always a haven of sanity in a too-binary MN world where accusations of wanting another lockdown/sacrificing the vulnerable/sacrificing the economy/deciding to follow the rules/deciding not to follow the rules/wanting to snitch on the neighbours/calling masks face nappies are still all too prevalent.

Humphreys- I do keep saying (and have been since they reintroduced mandatory masks outdoors about a month ago that we all just need to stay strong and follow the goddamn guidelines and we might just be OK (ish)

Flowers Bercows

Keepdistance · 15/09/2020 11:45

Bercows- you have my sympathy.
Both in the same very leaky boat.
Ive only got mild asthma and think i had covid in apr so hoping dd1 hasnt got it now.
But since she got the fever saturday night i havent taken my fabric mask off much ive slept in it too in case dp is incubating it.
I just feel so angry
At the parents taking ill kids to school
At our school as the HT is generally not the best anyway
At the world where only a few years ago ours was single form entry so half the risk.
But mainly the gov letting everyone go abroad.
Because even if we dont have covid, dd has caught something showing others are catching stuff.
But so sad too as dd2 is missing making friends in reception right now! But i just cant face sending them back if its negative or after the 10 days.
If even the school could sort themselves out.
Our maths online hasnt been updated yet.
With asthma and kids who get coughs this 100% wont work for us. And actually is a form of discrimination. Because they are expecting the kids to not go in ill, arent doing enough to stop them getting ill and then providing no work and then will be threats too.

Bercows are you going to write to your mp?
In mar to jun/jul we may have had 1 week symptom free so im not exagerrating. I know they can go back with the cough after test or 10d but that doesnt help when the next one will get ill.
Dc2 hasnt even got it yet but will have no lessons or school for probably the 14d.

EarlGreywithLemon · 15/09/2020 15:06

Bercows so sorry to hear! The testing situation is beyond the pale. Aside from the disruption to everyone’s lives, which is bad enough, I worry they’ll completely lose control as they did in March. If they don’t have enough tests I can’t see how they’ll keep a handle on the number and location of infections. Am I missing something?
And anyone remember Dido Harding in the summer saying “if in doubt, get a test”? Now it’s apparently everyone’s fault that we did just that.
I’m back from maternity this week, but thankfully working from home until at least January. DH is doing shared parental leave until December. Good timing, as people were beginning to come back to his office more and some meetings were going to restart. I have no idea what to do in December though. We were planning to send DD to nursery but I’m very nervous. I have a heart defect (and mild asthma, but I’m less worried about that) and we’ve been isolating completely. It would be like jumping straight into the deep end! Not that she even has a nursery place confirmed yet.

Humphriescushion · 15/09/2020 19:26

Glad you can work from home @ earlgrey, can imagine it will be scary sending dd to nursery, it is so hard to make any decisions about the future atm, we were hoping to get the uk for christmas and now are having to come to terms with not being able to.
Cases here now in universities already, i am back to monitoring figures obsessively.
How are peoples areas doing? Stay safe everyone.

CrunchyCarrot · 16/09/2020 21:12

It's great to see so many of you still around! Smile

Bercows, that sucks, really. I can't believe this govt. Or maybe I can. They've had months to figure out that when schools and Unis go back, cases would go up, and so testing capacity must go up too. It's not rocket science, but they appear incapable of figuring it out! There should have been preparation for this, but no, too busy messing up Brexit instead. Hmm As for Project Moonshite how on earth would they ever manage to do that???

It's not too bad round here, we're not in a main conurbation but semi-rural. However cases are rising so am getting prepared in case there's a lockdown in the weeks ahead. Otherwise it's pretty peaceful round here.

OP posts:
pontypridd · 16/09/2020 21:32

It feels as though this second wave is going to be far more devastating than the first.

Is it too early to think this? I don’t know why I do. Although it’s probably because there can be no more Lockdowns. People don’t care anymore or make any effort with masks or any of the measures (not round here anyway)

I’m not even feeling down about it. Even at the thought of us getting it and being really sick. Now I just feel resigned.

Augustbreeze · 16/09/2020 21:52

Oh @pontypridd remember there is some degree of social distancing, no large events etc....... so I don't think it will necessarily be worse than March.

And remember that even if you have pre-existing conditions you won't necessarily get really ill, even less chance of this for any children.

pontypridd · 16/09/2020 22:07

Personally I’m worried about Long Covid as lots of people we know are suffering from that and are of a similar age to us. Also worried about my DD who has Cerebral Palsy and is back at school.

But generally I think this Second wave will be a shocking time for a lot of people, for the country, world etc Massively so.

We cannot afford to lock the country down again which means we cannot control this. Nothing else is working or even being followed.

I scare myself more than anything because I can see all of this calmly and clearly without panic, doom, gloom or drama. And always, in the past it’s been moments like this where my predictions/ gut feelings have turned out to be right.

Keepdistance · 16/09/2020 22:09

Dc1 negative
Dc2 coughing now - but no snot bunged up though.im not going to try to test her as presumably it's the same non covid. And she hasnt been in the 48h beforehand so school wouldnt be contact tracing - except as where she got it.
Im not sending them in anyway. Just so sad. Dc2 is missing Reception and making friends.
Asside from worry about serious illness my 2 just wont be in school anyway if there is no testing as constant SI as it moves through the family (im asthmatic).

Tbh with coughs they would be better off with saliva tests at school daily for all those coughing. (You can test multiple people at once).
Cases in school in secondary in next village

Keepdistance · 16/09/2020 22:16

Imo thry will have to close schools. It's in over 3% now. 1000+.including scotland. If 15 in each of those 700+ english schools or even 10 thats 7000 cases and then 1/4 of their family members. So maybe another 7000.
But like march they are intentionally stopping testing.
And there are football matches going ahead with spectators.
12% of kids off school and thats before the positives wrack up.
I think we had covid in apr but who knows i didnt feel right for months and still feel off several days a month.

Humphriescushion · 17/09/2020 07:13

Morning all, I agree it feels a bit like deja vu at the moment. Expecting an announcement later today in France but is only a few days since the last one so not sure much is going happen. Keep just hearing that lockdown fo be avoided and we must live with the virus. Whilst is agree to some extent i think more could be done before we close the economy. I read that my area is shortly to have 30 minute saliva for some people which is some goodish news i suppose.

EarlGreywithLemon · 17/09/2020 15:21

Worrying story in the Guardian today about a definite case of reinfection in Nevada. Only six weeks between infections, and worse illness the second time around. Also, he’s a 25 year old, sounds like he’s otherwise healthy, so not someone with a weakened immune system
www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/17/nevada-reinfection-case-highlights-mysteries-covid-19

Keepdistance · 17/09/2020 17:26

Yes that's concerning Earl.

This is too. About how long they were infectious or at least still shedding.
May explain why schools are a bad idea. As people who had it August might still infect people.
I guess that's why keeping bubbles separate and small would help.
