@StrawberryJam200

Yes *@EarlGreywithLemon* , I'm trying to develop a system of saving links that I feel are really important to my Notes app, there's so much info and opinion coming from all over the place and I don't want to lose it/ nor risk contributing to misinformation when I want to quote it to someone!
I should do that, because I spend ages hunting down “something I’m sure I read somewhere”. It doesn’t help that there’s so much directly contradictory information out there, even from scientific studies.
Humphriescushion · 18/06/2020 10:47

I am expecting u turn on quarantine for those coming in from France, from boris today or soon after the visit from macroon. And i think just heard on French radio that the one metre rule for school can be relaxed if it is too difficult. ( disclaimer - i dont keep up to date with the school situation)

EarlGreywithLemon · 18/06/2020 11:35

@Humphriescushion that’s exactly how Boris operates, so I wouldn’t be surprised.
And I’m fairly sure they’ll relax the 2m rule here too, and consequences be damned. The question is, will Whitty and Vallance resign if they do?

Humphriescushion · 18/06/2020 11:58

Yes i am waiting for that, and the scientists response.

Worrying article on Grenfell cladding in the times today if helena is around.

Thanks so much for those links @EarlGreywithLemon !
Very interesting to look back on now.

(Can I ask are you on a laptop /PC, might be easier to search?)

I’m not, I used my phone - but I remembered the user names of some of the original posters and that made it easier to search. I started reading the threads right at the beginning during night feeds, but only started to post much later on. Smile

Pascal Soriot from AstraZeneca was on Belgian Radio this week talking about the Oxford vaccine, in case others haven’t seen.

Interesting points: they expect the vaccine to only give protection for a year, and he was talking about delivering it in October rather than September. Then again it could still be September for the UK and October for Belgium.

Are we still alive and kicking here? Good! This shitshow virus isn't done yet. I was afraid my first time posting this thread led to its eventual doom! Grin

EarlGreywithLemon · 18/06/2020 17:57

@crunchycarrot not at all, still around, just like the dreaded. If only there was doom for the virus, but I fear not yet.
The big question for me is what happens in September. We’ll probably plod along as we are over the summer, and if we’re lucky cases will plateau if not decrease. But there’ll be lots of voices demanding a full back to business in the autumn. And then what?

CrunchyCarrot · 18/06/2020 21:26

Then what, indeed. I have no idea. Track and Trace has gone poof for the foreseeable, Schools are on again off again, the economy is tanking... possible second wave, oh, and let's not forget Brexit. Yep it's going to be a long winter ahead.

Seems like the government forgot to mention to apple/google that they were interested in their app. Quote from todays times below.

"In a sign of the breakdown in trust between the two sides sources at Apple said that it had not been informed of the announcement or consulted about the plan to work together. “We don’t know what they mean by this hybrid model. They haven’t spoken to us about it,” a source said.

The company also queried the claim that its model was less accurate at measuring distance than the government’s NHSX model. “It is difficult to understand what these claims are as they haven’t spoken to us. But the app has been downloaded by six million in 24 hours in Germany, the Italians have had it going since Monday, the Dutch government and Irish government have it, and there has been no issue about proximity detection.”

Sounds like Matt Hancock lying again. Remember the 'I've spoken to the supermarkets...' fiasco, when he hadn't? He seems to forget that journalists will check every detail of what he's saying.

OP posts:
EarlGreywithLemon · 19/06/2020 12:12

That’s one aspect I didn’t look into in detail, but was there a connection between Cummins and the company who was awarded the app contract?
And weren’t they aware that the app didn’t work on Apple phones?
They say that the app is just the “cherry on the cake”, people prefer the personal touch etc. But I don’t see how this can work properly on “manual” only. How are they going to trace people who were sandwiched together on public transport with contact tracers? Or a passenger in a hailed cab? Am I missing something here?

itsmdhbnsu · 19/06/2020 12:40

All those 'don't think it will become widespread in the UK' posts on the first threads!! Shock Shock

I'm into history, and that's what folk started off saying in most pandemics.

Keepdistance · 19/06/2020 15:49

Very concerned about sept.
Maybe they are still intending a second wave. Or that the vax might be available.

Will schools be ft i just cant see how. 30 in a bubble is huge. When considering siblings.
And gov tutoring plan involves face to face??

StrawberryJam200 · 19/06/2020 16:29

No earlgrey , there was in the end no link between the app company and Dominic C, just another Cummings who was unrelated.

StrawberryJam200 · 19/06/2020 17:55

Gavin Williamson has explained in the daily briefing that school bubbles will be expanded from max 15 to max 30 in order that all children can return to school full time in September.

Right. This does not work for secondary!

Keepdistance · 19/06/2020 18:41

Pretty rubbish for any adult or child in the vulnerable group.
May as well just stand in a 420 kids plus 800 parent and teacher mass gathering. (With all the parent workplaces and use of PT.)
I didnt see about NZ 2 infected people but assume if a flight has 2 related even people on it from uk then there as more infections here than the 1k a day. (Even allowing for 8k).

EarlGreywithLemon · 19/06/2020 22:11

@itsmdhbnsu I was getting increasingly worried at the time, but did I for one moment imagine 1,000 deaths a day here? Or still being in this situation in June, with no end in sight? No way. I remember thinking how glad the evacuees from Wuhan must be to be back in the safe UK, where it won’t get as bad (hollow laugh)

EarlGreywithLemon · 19/06/2020 22:14

Glad they haven’t sunk that low - yet
EarlGreywithLemon · 19/06/2020 22:26

@Keepdistance @StrawberryJam200 I’m really not sure they have a plan, either for schools in September or for any of this more generally. I honestly think they’re winging it and hoping something works out on the day. None of them seem to have moved on from university essay crisis mode.
On the schools announcement, with any other government I’d think they thought this through, and they’ve come up with a plan to make full time schooling work. It may not be the best plan, but there is one. In their case, I’m pretty sure they’ve made the announcement because Williamson is under pressure, but they’ll now throw it onto the schools and teachers to make it work. 🤷‍♀️

The Zoe app is definitely estimating more than 1,000- about 3,500 the last few days, and over 4,000 only a few days ago.
StrawberryJam200 · 23/06/2020 16:43

Anyone else worried by today's and yesterday's announcements, there's a whole lot of easing going on in England suddenly?! Well, over July and August.

Keepdistance · 23/06/2020 18:51

Yes
Concerned for shielders
Teachers
Children with they be fined for non attendance.
I dont think 1/1700 is that low. (It is if say just popping into corner shop for a couple of min) if your school is 420 kids. Thats 1/4 schools that size would have a student with it let alone teachers/parents etc and without pubs open or shops.
Im not convinced there will be a 'wave' yet but it will drop slower.
I imagine they want stuff open for the summer season?
