Am I missing something? Everyone seems to have gone back to normal?!

So much traffic here today, we live on a main road and it's been quiet for weeks now but today it's suddenly back to how it was pre lockdown.
Loads of people out on the streets, in quite big groups, a massive load of runners in a group just gone by and earlier a huge group of cyclists
And I've not been watching out particularly we our living room looks out over the road and I've been stuck under DS with the windows open and just looked up when I've heard noise.
Do you think people have had enough and just gone back to normal after all the media articles this week?
Did I miss an announcement? Not being disingenuous honestly wondering, I can't find anything online

Cracked this week and took kids in car for a woodland walk. Tesco's was nicer atmos and people behaving more normally around each other (as in being polite and friendly despite keeping distance). I've got my mum onto making masks as she's a dab hand with sewing machine. I fully expect to be wearing one when lockdown lifted. I am supportive of lockdown til 11 May but then I'll be one of those people out and about more as long as figures hold up. Why? Because we run the risk of killing more people due to economic hardship and the biggest recession we have had since the 1930s if we don't start living with this thing rather than hiding from it.

Chocolatecakeandpinkcustard · 25/04/2020 15:59

and ive just read the death toll is up again over 800 so clearly this isnt working

Do you watch the daily briefings?

They've said several times that they expect the death toll to remain high for some time. They expect it to come down slowly in steps. There is also a lag in recording.

We will see variations day to day but should see a slight drop week on week.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2020 16:00

If this lockdown isn't working at all why reopen some of the shops?
It's scary that we could have a bigger wave because people are lifting the restrictions themselves then.
The govt needs to get a grip! It's either lifting or not!

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 16:01

Still very quiet here. Maybe a few more cars but same level of people and sirens (more).

But I’ve been in my sunny garden today and can only go by my street which isn’t far.

Quite honestly I feel like I'm being taken for a mug. I've been home for 5 weeks. Yesterday, watched neighbours a few doors down, a friend came to visit, empty handed, so not taking them essential shopping, and her husband came to pick her up a few hours later.

Neighbours opposite went away for the weekend, they have a house and business in London, so I am guessing that's where they went. They have also had several people visit. Then there are the videos of mass gatherings on London bridge on a Thursday night. I can't see the point anymore. Plus theres a chip van coming round here twice a week which people are queuing for!! How do they know he hasn't got coronavirus??
Meanwhile my self employed husband is unable to go to work!!! So we are expected to live on fresh air, as I can only claim for hours I work, and I haven't been required to work! There's only so much people can take!

Roads busy here
Lots of BBQ s may just be families but some noisy
Supermarket was rammed last pm as I drove home.
Have heard of local businesses opening back up next week and the 11th may being cited as a date when lots of stuff will resume.

People have had enough. There's no clear exit plan and people are getting fed up and deciding that they'd rather take their chances than be stuck in a seemingly never ending lockdown that just keeps getting extended with very low quality of life and for some, next to no income.

GabsAlot · 25/04/2020 16:02

oh fuck its priti patel

RingtheBells · 25/04/2020 16:03

At B&Q there are 23 people behind DH and 24 in front, mostly men over 55, why am I not surprised. DH is 59, an exciting afternoon out for them all. DH is getting wood to mend his outbuilding window, grow bags and possibly drill bits. Why do they always buy drill bits.

dontcallmelen · 25/04/2020 16:04

Yy haven’t we have enough to put up with without her being inflicted on us.

PilatesPeach · 25/04/2020 16:05

Around 300 of the deaths announced today were prior to last Tuesday 21st and some even from early March.

Homebase open - big queue. I also notice the 2 m gap is now about 1 metre/3 feet as I think about it. Walked past it just now with dog.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/04/2020 16:06

I'm in Scotland, no relaxing of powers here in fact more local car parks have been shut this week, Police article says that there are a core group who are getting fined multiple times. Seems to be mostly still the same few idiots round here, most folk still abiding by the lockdown measures same as they were 3 or 4 weeks ago. DH is an ambulance driver and out on the roads says it's a little busier, one local town doesn't seem to have bothered with lock down at all in contrast to everywhere else from what he can see. Higher levels of drug use etc in that place which might explain it a bit.

Inkpaperstars · 25/04/2020 16:07

BBC political correspondent said govt are worried about declining adherence.....so they have sent Priti Patel out to win people back round?!? WHAT are they thinkin? Sad

midgebabe · 25/04/2020 16:09

So break the rules now and drag the whole thing out. Or even worse, force the exit strategy to be one of repeated lockdowns , higher death rates and greatest possible economic damage

All because if you are talked to like adults , if you aren't being told how many sleeps till it's over , you don't feel able to carry on

Fortunately round here things are better. Perhaps they will end up doing regional releases after all

BeansOnToast4T · 25/04/2020 16:09

I live on the main road through a village, there has been significantly more traffic today. I went to the local Lidl earlier and for the first time in ages there was a queue of traffic at the junction out of the village - Lidl was quiet so they weren't all shopping, I don't understand where everyone was going.

loobyloo1234 · 25/04/2020 16:10

How can people be going back to normal when only food and DIY shops are open?

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/04/2020 16:14

Gabs Yes we've had the worst of both worlds really. Lockdown but not proper lockdown. Gone through it all for very little. Especially given it seems our government hasn't used the time wisely. They could've spent the past two months following Germany's lead. Organising mass testing, getting enough PPE for our staff, masks for the public.

SunshineCake Agreed. I think the fairest solution is those who want to "go back to normal", ignoring the fact there's a highly contagious virus circulating, should sign something confirming they consent to being at the back of the queue for any medical care if there's a second wave.

jay55 · 25/04/2020 16:14

The building site opposite where I live is still closed but when I went shopping in the week there was loads of construction going on. There is loads more traffic today and more people out walking.
It's given me more to look at out the window.

I do think people are getting bored and complacent.

I've a friend in Georgia, their state is beginning to reopen and his dating app has gone berserk the last few days, guys from other states wanting to travel in for sex, mental.

testing987654321 · 25/04/2020 16:18

It's Saturday today, so presumably a lot of people are off work, hence more cars/shopping and trips to the park.

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 16:18

How could anyone have gone back to normal when most places you'd go on a normal weekend?

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 16:18

are closed!!!

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 16:19

In terms of worst of both worlds I don’t mind this approach. We have more workers (going by list of key workers at schools) than some other countries. I wouldn’t unleash it all by opening it all up but by tweaking what we have now.

More non-essential businesses will restart as we’ve seen so gradually we’ll see change.

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 16:20

Treat the public like children and they'll act like children 🤷‍♀️

megletthesecond · 25/04/2020 16:20

Still quiet around here. Large town.
I've just been for a run and only had to cross the road to avoid other people a few times. Very few cars even on a dual carriageway roundabout.

GabsAlot · 25/04/2020 16:20
