Protesting against the lockdown! What is wrong with them? Apparently they are finding it too hard!

OP posts:
MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:16

Or they want to be treated like adults and manage their own risks?

Perhaps some realise that lockdown will cost more life’s in the long run than the virus?

midgebabe · 19/04/2020 14:18

Will it? Can you give any evidence to support that?

MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:20

A Whitehall report circulating last week (as reported by several broad sheet estimated the number of indirect deaths in the UK will be 150,000
You can google it.....

Buddyelf · 19/04/2020 14:20

Perhaps some realise that lockdown will cost more life’s in the long run than the virus?

How so?

Doyoumind · 19/04/2020 14:21

Life's what?

Greysparkles · 19/04/2020 14:21

Poverty.

ememem84 · 19/04/2020 14:23

Perhaps some realise that lockdown will cost more life’s in the long run than the virus?

Mental health issues exacerbated
More suicides potentially
More murder (potentially)
People not seeking treatment for other illnesses because drs are unable to give appointments

I said to dh the other day that I suspect there’ll be more injuries too - people taking up exercise (cycling and running) could lead to accidents.

I’ve started couch to 5k. Have tripped once already....

GreenTulips · 19/04/2020 14:25

There have been reports that either you slow down the spread so the NHS can cope or you let the virus lose and lose more lives due to lack of hospital space but the economy continues.

The thought is these people will die anyway but the economy will be good

It’s a choice.

grumpyfuckerr · 19/04/2020 14:27

US don’t exactly have the social security system of most countries. If people don’t go to work they starve.

Bagelsandbrie · 19/04/2020 14:28

It’s a balance between letting the health service cope and not ruining the economy. It’s not about directly saving lives. As soon as lockdown is lifted more people will get the virus and more people will die. The virus isn’t going away because we are in lockdown. Lots of people in the USA think lockdown is pointless.

midgebabe · 19/04/2020 14:28

So Indirect deaths predicted to be about 1/6 of the deaths that would occur without lockdown.

Yeah, what was your point again?!?

Bagelsandbrie · 19/04/2020 14:28

I am in the UK by the way and agree with the current measures but my family is in the USA. The queues for food banks are apocalyptic at the moment. They don’t have the welfare systems we do.

MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:30

Midgebabe

Any evidence that covid deaths will be 900,000 people in the uk?

Astoatora54 · 19/04/2020 14:31

Or they want to be treated like adults and manage their own risks?

Which would be fine if it were only themselves they were putting at risk but it's not, is it? Why do you think it's ok to kill other people?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 14:32

Thank heavens you don’t live in the US, we have enough sheep willing to blindly follow the government without questioning illogical decisions.

What we need is more people willing to look past teddy bear media stories and challenge why are leaders aren’t using the science and data to guide their decisions, and why they are willing to destroy our economy while hospitals are laying off medical personnel and not at full capacity, and why they are sacrificing the health of some people for the health of others as they are not allowed non-Covid treatment.

So please do stay in your own country... we don’t need nor want you in the US.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 14:34

Oh dammit.... *our

MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:35

Astoatora54

Where did I say it was ok to kill other people?

WatcherintheRye · 19/04/2020 14:35

I’ve started couch to 5k. Have tripped once already....

Grin Was that getting off the couch? Sorry - made me lol! Not laughing at you, but with you....I'm still on the couch, unfortunately!

midwesteaster · 19/04/2020 14:36

These are a very small group of people.
They are often well funded by the far right.
The Americans I know think they are idiots.

But you have to understand that some US stay at home orders are stricter than the UK one, in addition support packages are much weaker. If you add to that the issues that healthcare access is often tied to work and benefit packages much lower. Then it is possible to see why people want to work.

It is also worth noting that stay at home orders often cover a whole state and it can be hard for the rural low population areas to feel the need for same safety levels as the densely populated urban areas in their states.

There are plenty of people on Mumsnet who want the UK lockdown to finish. In my view neither of these groups are focusing on science enough but I can understand their concerns.

MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:37

Emenem84

Well done on starting couch to 5k! You may suffer the odd trip but running will be great for your health

Astoatora54 · 19/04/2020 14:38

You said that adults can manage their own risks but seem completely unaware that it is not just your own health that you risk if you flout lockdown (especially if you are young and healthy) but other vulnerable members of society. Why should people who don't want to stay at home be allowed to put others at risk?

Astoatora54 · 19/04/2020 14:39

number of indirect deaths in the UK will be 150,000
You can google it.....

I did. It seems to be based on "sources" and published in The Spectator. Really objective.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 14:44

@astoatora54

The question many of us are asking is, why don’t we allow the ones with less risk get on with life which will allow us to shield the more vulnerable longer and more effectively.

A stronger economy will put more money into the system which will fund safety nets longer and more effectively, it will keep more people healthy with non-Covid treatment keeping them out of risk groups.

Nobody, even those protesting, are saying pull grandma out of her house...they understand and agree with some measures. But they don’t agree with total closure.

thecatisginger · 19/04/2020 14:44

Thank heavens I don't live in the USA

And you don't think that similar protests will soon begin to occur here in the UK? It's only a matter of time.
