Protesting against the lockdown! What is wrong with them? Apparently they are finding it too hard!

OP posts:
MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:44

Vulnerable members of society should stay at home. Absolutely no question.

Non vulnerable members of society should not be lockdown but follow sensible social distancing guidelines, we need to allow the virus to spread in as controlled way as possible

LastTrainEast · 19/04/2020 14:46

ememem84 "People not seeking treatment for other illnesses because drs are unable to give appointments " you understand that if we let it spread unchecked there won't be any doctors treating you anyway as all will be dead or busy.

midwesteaster · 19/04/2020 14:47

Also in terms of being grateful you don't live in the USA.
Don't feel too sorry for me, I've been on a stricter lockdown for longer than the UK, our curve is flattening.
We know schools aren't going back this year so can plan that.
We aren't running out of PPE.
We aren't finding out State policy from secret briefings on the front pages of newspapers.
The Governor has been clear that our exit strategy will be science led and clearly announced at public briefings.
Nowhere is managing this perfectly but I wouldn't swap with UK family at the moment.

LastTrainEast · 19/04/2020 14:48

MH1111 letting everyone out at once will not "allow the virus to spread in as controlled way as possible" that's the point.

Letting some out as we are now is still killing 850+ a day and increasing.

midgebabe · 19/04/2020 14:50

The death rate estimate is from 0.5 to 5% just from the virus with with higher rates associated with a health service that can't cope, which is close to happening even through infection is now controlled through lockdown. Oh and higher rates of death due to other problems such as cancer from a failed health service

Up to 80% infection required for it to die out naturally. Uk,population about 67 million?

So clearly somewhat more than your 150,000.

MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:53

Where’s your evidence that we are killing 850 a day and it’s increasing?

In three weeks time even the UK
Lockdown will be relaxed to a degree (as Italy and Spain have)
The point of the lockdown was ensure the NHS was not overwhelmed which it hasn’t been.

peppermintcapsules · 19/04/2020 14:54

US don’t exactly have the social security system of most countries. If people don’t go to work they starve.

Outside of the West, few countries, not 'most', have extensive welfare systems.

Astoatora54 · 19/04/2020 14:55

Lockdown will be relaxed to a degree (as Italy and Spain have)

Italy still has a far stricter lockdown than the UK has so I am not sure how that supports your argument.

MH1111 · 19/04/2020 14:57

Midgebabe

The UK currently has 16000 deaths the government (currently) believes it could be around 50,000 in the end.

Mortality rates are very difficult to apply as we do not know how many people have the virus

redwoodmazza · 19/04/2020 14:57

I fear for the US.
No similar health system to the UK and so many obese people. Obesity is an underlying condition for Covid-19 due to the breathing difficulties obesity causes.
Sad

PickAChew · 19/04/2020 14:57

There's protests in states with less strict lockdowns than than ours but the lack of welfare is a valid point. There is no furlough support over there and, each week, millions of new claims for unemployment are being made, via a system so ancient it's not fit for purpose.

You just need to take one look at the President and the drivel that pours out of his mouth to see how easy it is for right wing groups to get people stirred up.

PickAChew · 19/04/2020 15:02

Non vulnerable members of society should not be lockdown but follow sensible social distancing guidelines, we need to allow the virus to spread in as controlled way as possible

We had that and everyone went to the fucking beach. All at once. We're not all chained to our beds under the current system. We're following social distancing.

feelingverylazytoday · 19/04/2020 15:03

redwoodmazza the UK isn't too far behind the US as far as obesity rates go.

RideaCockHorseOfCourse · 19/04/2020 15:04

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 15:05

@PickAChew

People here don’t want unemployment they want to work and to run their businesses.

How is that hard to understand?

Reports are coming out that 50% of bars and restaurants in my state will close for good if the restrictions aren’t lifted in a matter of weeks. Those businesses employ real people and they will not have a job to go back to.

PickAChew · 19/04/2020 15:12

Where did I say that people wanted unemployment? Crikey.

Astoatora54 · 19/04/2020 15:16

Did anyone else see this on Twitter? Food for thought! Wink

twitter.com/chrisnoessel/status/1251392814333587457

I think there is going to have to be some compromise on lockdown but arguably the US is in one of the worst positions to open up to a partial lockdown as so many people cannot access healthcare or testing.

LilMissRe · 19/04/2020 15:17

I have family in the US; Florida- and I wouldn't want to swap places with them, not if you pay me. I think on the whole the American people are kind natured and whilst some are completely deluded, they are a minority.

The Americans deserve a leader who leads, leads with integrity and transparency, who sees the value in human life. They deserve opportunities to achieve a standard of living without fearing redundancy and discrimination. Everyone there should have a chance at achieving whatever American Dream they believe exists. However, Trump and his administration has not and never will offer the Americans this, and I truly believe they deserve better than this.

It is the Wild West, with embarrassingly tragic lack of rights for a wealthy nation and so these protests do not surprise me.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 15:18

Here’s what you said...

There's protests in states with less strict lockdowns than than ours but the lack of welfare is a valid point. There is no furlough support over there and, each week, millions of new claims for unemployment are being made, via a system so ancient it's not fit for purpose.

Indicating that if welfare were readily available people wouldn’t be protesting. To which I state most people do not want unemployment or welfare, they want to earn their pay.

TealWater · 19/04/2020 15:23

I have to agree with the OP, but I also see the point people make about the lack of health care. It's a travesty that America is so backward they don't even have proper health care. Supposedly a superpower and a 'free' country yet many people cannot afford health care there. It is really a 3rd world/developing country in that area. All other western first world countries have a proper universal health care system. When will America stop being so barbaric and backward and come into this century with the rest of us first world countries?

TealWater · 19/04/2020 15:26

most people do not want unemployment or welfare, they want to earn their pay.

I think you'll find that is true for ANY country. It is not a value unique to only America. Yet only America is having these demonstrations. So it is something fundamentally wrong in the fibre of American society.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 15:37

@tealwater

Or something right? Probably more accurate is ‘something different”

I think it’s just one of those things that unless you’ve been a part of it won’t ever be understood.

user1468953505 · 19/04/2020 15:43

Has anyone seen the movie Contagion? It's about a virus pandemic.

The US would have 2.1 million deaths without measures to stop it. The number in the movie was similar and what it should was the breakdown in society as people started panicking when that many people die at once.

I think that keeping order is also part of keeping people alive (even though it has knock on effects - it's nothing like the damage that chaos does).

MH1111 · 19/04/2020 15:44

There are protests in Germany too, but this is not being widely reported. The authorities tried to ban the protests but the courts would not support this

ememem84 · 19/04/2020 15:45

@MH1111 thanks! I’m already feeling the benefits! Aside from the tripping...!

@WatcherintheRye haha! No. But I do prefer the couch to running.

@LastTrainEast oh I get that if things just let go and lockdown is lifted too soon it’ll be absolute hospital chaos.

Where I am all non essential appointments (including in some cases chemo treatment) have been cancelled indefinetly.
