Protesting against the lockdown! What is wrong with them? Apparently they are finding it too hard!

@GabsAlot Texas is starting their reopening process next week by opening State Parks but people need to maintain Social Distancing rules there. Where parks even closed in the UK? Dont assume that when a state starts to "reopen" that they are just throwing away ALL the rules. States are opening on slow basis here. A few things open for a few weeks, if the numbers dont jump, a few more things get to open. I keep reading on here people thinking that England is going to reopen in 3 weeks, is that true? What does that entail?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 17:41

@B1rdbra1n

I think your ‘sub-country’ statement is very accurate and not at all insulting.

somebodyelseinstead · 19/04/2020 17:45

It is rather frightening to see that some people genuinely believe that they can make any problem go away if they shout loudly and aggressively enough, deny that the problem exists, and wave a gun at anybody who disagrees with them.

Yeah, that'll work. Not.

GabsAlot · 19/04/2020 17:48

thanks rootbeer-some werent closed no which i disagrree with-glad its being done gradually there

i have no idea if we'll start in 3 weeks its meant to be reviewd then so we'll find out-my money is on another 3 weeks personally

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 17:49

Sigh....that is not what they are doing...the vast majority of the protesters understand there is real risk. They just don’t agree with the way the risk is being handled. They want a plan to responsibly reopen their states.

B1rdbra1n · 19/04/2020 17:56

I feel that everything about the USA now tends to be filtered through the lens of Trump, he has tried to make America into a thing that works for his benefit when he is supposed to work for the benefit of the American people.
Now his vast bottom is wedged into the throne that he has fashioned for himself and he cant be shoe horned out of it:(

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 19/04/2020 17:56

@saltinesandcoffeecups not ALL protestors understand the real risk. Sadly there are some that still believe this is a "hoax" or "no worse then the flu". In my State we had protestors (being a small state it did not receive any attention other then here). It was put together by a group of "Free-Staters" from the Libertarian Party. The amount of people at the protest was not HUGE, but I'll still be curious to see what happens to my states numbers in about 2 weeks. Thankfully most people in my State think our Governor is doing a great job and dont agree with those few crazy people.

GabsAlot · 19/04/2020 17:57

doesnt help when its all differnt states with different ideas and trump just being useless about it all

tiredmedic · 19/04/2020 17:59

Saltine we're in agreement here, believe it, there are a LOT of UK citizens who want sensible restrictions in this country and yes, we also need to give thought to the economy which is going to be a bit bad when this is over. Understand that I'm not decrying all Americans, far from it, just those who are so hidebound in their belief that the UK way of socialising healthcare and a safety net for the not so lucky is just pinko scum commie bastard liberalism and despite the evidence to the contrary.....go on believing it. Got no time for them or the ones who go on about their taxes being used for blah, blah, blah. No one complained back in the 30's when FDR used taxes to drag the economy out of the depression, so why bitch now? I just don't understand it.

MissConductUS · 19/04/2020 18:01

@saltinesandcoffeecups - in Michigan you can't buy garden supplies or paint but you can buy cannabis.

I'm in New York, where the restrictions are fairly sensible.

Hanamuslim · 19/04/2020 18:03

Given the USA is bigger than the UK, they are crippling with deaths and infected. The lockdown will help them, they just got to stick it out like we have.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 18:06

My state had a protest yesterday (and more planned for the coming weeks).

In the Facebook planning page there are your share of crazy people, but the vast majority are people who are very reasonable and from both sides of the political aisle.

The interesting bit this morning, the day after the first protest, are the pictures and video from folks proving our local paper ran a picture with a confederate flag photoshopped into it. There have been allegations of photos from other protests being exaggerated or blatantly wrong.

tiredmedic · 19/04/2020 18:06

PS, when people are dying from disease, war or just starvation, somebody has to step in and give help.....that means taxes. And before you start about how big your tax bill is, try living here with VAT (equivalent of state and/or federal purchase tax at 20%) and petrol (gas) at $5.50 a gallon equivalent......but you don't get bankrupted by a medical bill, or screwed by unaffordable health insurance over here....because we pay higher taxes. Sure we grumble about prices here but the American alternative is not and never will be, acceptable.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 18:11

@tiredmedic

If you’ll notice I have made no comment on how other countries do things. For sure I have my opinions, but would never presume to pontificate upon them to the citizens and taxpayers of those countries.

I’m sure we do have many of the same views as I am of the opinion that most people are intelligent and reasonable.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 19/04/2020 18:11

@saltinesandcoffeecups what state are you in?

JudyCoolibar · 19/04/2020 18:14

Or they want to be treated like adults and manage their own risks?

How are those people flocking onto the beaches in Florida managing any risk? And if they are prepared to take the risk, how do they guarantee no spreading it to other people who don't want to, not least health workers.?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 18:15

@Hanamuslim

Please share your sources to back up your statement.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/04/2020 18:15

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 19/04/2020 18:16

@Hanamuslim

You do realize that the UK has a larger death rate per 100,000 population then the USA. If we are "crippling" from it, what does that mean for the UK?

RosesandIris · 19/04/2020 18:17

Not to mention the many elderly people who will just fade away due to isolation loneliness and poor nutrition.

mitsyblue · 19/04/2020 18:17

What @MH1111 said - why can't we manage our own risk in this country?

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 19/04/2020 18:18

'Life's' is wrong on so many levels. It is either life or lives.

Amotherof6 · 19/04/2020 18:18

From what I understand the USA don't have the same benefits/welfare help we have here. The healthcare is completely different here. Maybe the people protesting don't realise that the lock down is to slow the thread to help the more vulnerable in society/maybe they don't care or maybe they are very poor and cannot afford to not work.
Perhaps, they don't like to be told, even if the evidence suggests less will die if a lock down occurs... who knows but they do have the right to protest as we also.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 19/04/2020 18:20

@saltinesandcoffeecups I dont know a lot about Wisconsins numbers. I'm in New Hampshire. Our biggest problem is we are on the Massachusetts border, our southern tier is getting hit much harder then our northern tier. That being said, considering we ARE right next to Mass, we are doing a pretty good job. I think if we were not next to Mass we could start slowly opening, but we have the fear that if we start opening things people from Mass will start flocking here. They were already doing that, which is why our Governor closed Hotels/Motels/AirBnbs.

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/04/2020 18:20

I said to dh the other day that I suspect there’ll be more injuries too - people taking up exercise (cycling and running) could lead to accidents.
Completely the opposite is true.
