According to the ONS, 52 people between 15 and 44 died up to 3 April.

Between 3 April and yesterday, deaths increased from 3,600 to 16,000.... Assuming deaths of 15 to 44 year olds have increased proportionately, 232 would have died. Assuming that 4% of the UK has been infected (which circa Imperial’s latest estimates), that’s c.1.3 million under 40s who’ve been infected. That’s 17 per 100,000.... which is likely to be an underestimate as many thousands of those who are currently infected and haven’t dead, Will sadly die in the coming weeks, so figure is probably more like 20-30 per 100,000.

“ I wonder if the fairest thing when starting to ease lockdown is to initially have it entirely on a voluntary basis? ”

Yes, though I’d argue any response to any easing is voluntary.

Derbygerbil · 20/04/2020 16:08

I wonder if the fairest thing when starting to ease lockdown is to initially have it entirely on a voluntary basis?

Unless you’re literally going to force people into their local cafe or cinema, any easing has to be voluntary!

Derbygerbil · 20/04/2020 16:12

immunity certificates

Awful idea... It will:

a) give false assurance to those who have had it when we don’t know how immune people are/will remain,
b) encourage those without a certificate to take their chances and get CV,
c) spawn a black market making them not worth the paper they’re printed on

Still been lurking on this thread. 3 friends have now lost an elderly parent. All over the country as well, 1 was in a care home locally. So sad.

baublegirl454 · 20/04/2020 16:33

Am a longtime lurker of these threads. Has anyone kept the comparison of deaths with Italy chart up to date? Are we still tracking them?

Focusanddetermination · 20/04/2020 16:35

Lifting of lockdown can never be voluntary because of the schools. Schools closed means employers have no choice but to say people can work from home. Schools open and every employer will expect all or most staff back.

changedmind · 20/04/2020 17:45

I hope you all will behave like good girls, and take the children to school and go back to work when we say so

justchecking1 · 20/04/2020 18:10

It won't be truly voluntary though will it? I imagine it would come with a stop to any government funded help, so those with no savings will have no choice but to go back to work, even if they think it's a terrible idea. It'll be somewhat coerced rather than voluntary

EducatingArti · 20/04/2020 20:36

I was told you could go direct to A and E by a senior hospital doctor.

LilacTree1 · 20/04/2020 20:39

Educating perhaps she means go to the A&E isolation booth. All hospitals near me have those. It’s unlikely to mean “ just walk through the door to A&E.” hospitals are surrounded by security.

EducatingArti · 20/04/2020 20:49

She might do but she did say you didn't need to go through 111 and that you would go through the red area of a and e. Perhaps different hospitals are different?

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/04/2020 21:22

Italy had its predicted "zero infection" dates published today, region by region. Lombardia won't be until 27/6. Where I am 7/5. Obviously if, all things considered, things progress as the models think.

Oakmaiden · 20/04/2020 21:46

Italy had its predicted "zero infection" dates published today, region by region.

Is that assuming the lockdown continues in its current form? Or with lockdown ending?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3886452-The-hospital-I-work-in-is-so-quiet

This thread about hospitals being really quiet is eye-opening.

RigaBalsam · 20/04/2020 22:03

I had an email today from a friend in London she said her hospital is crazy busy. ICU are working with non trained ICU nurses.

Maybe does depend on where in London.

RedToothBrush · 20/04/2020 23:00

We are behind Italy. London has a density of population which is higher which will be a problem.

Realistically I think we will have some lockdown restrictions lifted before June, but I still think it unlikely to be earlier than late May at this point.

Those figures really underline my feelings on that too.

Economically the end of June is also our cut off. The treasury calculations are based on that.

But the hospitality and leisure industries are going to be restricted for longer than that. Which is going to devastate them.

People have not yet fully grasped this reality and the extent of this problem.

I am wondering when the penny will drop on that.

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/04/2020 23:13

Oak- lockdown in its present form will continue until 4/5 nationally. Word is, then restrictions will begin to be relaxed. Probably region by region.

Ezira · 20/04/2020 23:18

It’s unlikely to mean “ just walk through the door to A&E”
I would be fucking furious if I had been isolating then had to go to A&E due to an accident and someone wandered in with CV! There are likely to be vulnerable and elderly people in A&E, you’re a selfish twat if you even think about going there with CV symptoms! Thankfully they are stopping people at the door.

pocketem · 20/04/2020 23:28

In the United States, Tennessee and Georgia states are ending their lockdown.

Gyms, hair salons, bowling alleys and tattoo parlors are among businesses that may reopen Friday — as long as owners follow strict social distancing and hygiene requirements. By Monday, movie theaters may resume selling tickets and restaurants limited to takeout orders can go back to limited dine-in service.

babychange12 · 21/04/2020 00:06

How would you be able to have social distancing in a hairdresser or tattoo parlour???

ToffeeYoghurt · 21/04/2020 00:20

I saw that thread. It was interesting as the OP said most of the Covid patients were over 70. I've seen so many reports of the Covid wards being full of younger patients (partly because older patients are sometimes not being admitted to hospital). I wonder if she's in central London. I remember looking at the number of cases (and deaths) by area the other day. I noticed outer London seemed to be worse hit. Fewer people live full-time in central London perhaps?

I assumed people did realise how awful it is for the hospitality and leisure industries? I certainly do. I think it's more people know there's nothing much that can be done to make it ok. Either way things are bad for those sectors. Premature end to lockdown would see huge numbers of ill and dying people. Disruption either way for those industries. The best we can hope for is containing the spread so that a proper recovery can then be aimed for. It will be slow but it's a sector that will always be in demand. Longer-term.

Are there many cases in the American states that are ending lockdown? I wonder if the US closing it's borders to Europe and some other countries is starting to have an effect on reducing the spread?

pocketem · 21/04/2020 06:04

South Carolina opening back up too now

pocketem · 21/04/2020 06:06

Another doctor dies. This time an A+E consultant in Derby
