I had my results back and as suspected negative. A bit disappointed as would have been good to get it over and done with!

Re the rich/poor divide, this piece makes for some pretty sober reading: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/may/01/covid-19-coronavirus-newham-london-uk-worst-affected-area

MollyButton · 02/05/2020 08:59

I'm not sure if this is the same link as up thread but https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/deathsinvolvingcovid19bylocalareasanddeprivation/deathsoccurringbetween1marchand17april has an amazing interactive map, and you can get down to a very local level. For example I saw that my town has a very low death rate and my "area" of town has zero deaths. Which probably partly explains why I haven't heard of anyone dying.

quertyuiop100 · 02/05/2020 09:04

We live in a HA house and I had a knock on the door a week or so ago. Opened it, to find the gas engineer there wanting to come in and do the annual check. We'd not been told at all so I turned him away. They've now written to say they are coming on 11th. I'm still not happy about it, but guess we will have to let them do it.

Sebastian Payne@SebastianEPayne
Senior Tories are worried Britons are too fearful to return to work. @IpsosMORI suggests we’re one of the counties most scared by coronavirus.

“Our comms have been the best in Europe. We scared everyone shitless, but now we have to undo some of that.”

Johnson seeks more sophisticated slogan to exit lockdown

Can anyone explain WHY the uk is more scared of covid-19 than other countries?

Its a complete mystery to me.

WhyNotMe40 · 02/05/2020 10:18

The UK is more scared because people have absolutely no confidence in the government to keep them safe - herd immunity, the science that kept changing, PPE rules that kept changing to what was available, the lockdown that isn't a lockdown, testing is useless now testing is most important.... What have I missed??

Oh yes the fact that at the beginning they said it's only a flu for most people, no need to worry, then we see all the people dying.... That lack of confidence?

WhyNotMe40 · 02/05/2020 10:19

Or was it a rhetorical question? Grin

"Our comms have been the best in Europe. We scared everyone shitless, but now we have to undo some of that.”

They really do think that we're just mindless idiots, don't they. Full stop for statement, not a rhetorical question Smile

SistemaAddict · 02/05/2020 10:58

I'll email my letting agents and explain I'm
Shielded.

Does anyone else think that the daily briefings are unnecessary now? Could they just issue a statement instead? The only people who watch are likely to be the ones who are compliant and interested. The ones who are doing more or less as they please don't care and won't be interested. A segment at the start of the 6 o clock news would be better and other news sources can do it as well. Maybe reduce to once a week with additional ones if there's anything
new to report? I think people have become a little numb to it all now. It would free up time for the government to work on a solution too.

Keepdistance · 02/05/2020 11:08

And now they are talking about removing the 2m rule. So they can get schools and work places back.

Yes they have everyones interests at heart while parliament still cower at home.

Rich vs poor
Surely tower blocks with no gardens no vit d
Closer together.
Less likely to do online shopping
Jobs as key workers fewer office jobs
Retirement older so more 60+ working
Private schools where parents could have removed without fines.
Public transport vs cars
I think in some ways as more poorer people might drink and smoke more they are less worried about dying young and have less enjoyable retirement years to look forward to so havent changed behaviour much.

Reading on another thread how many jobs have been forced to still go in was rather shocking. Really at mercy of gov and your bosses

Where's the removal of the 2m distance being discussed, @Keepdistance? A bit of a Google search, plus a read of the BBC's daily briefing hasn't revealed it to me.

StrawberryJam200 · 02/05/2020 11:41

@NoWordForFluffy it was mentioned on Radio 4 this morning, how it's more than WHO guidance (1m) and more than one country's who have eased lockdown (1.5m), I think. Having seen a graphic of how the droplets from a cough can spread in a supermarket I'm happier with 2m personally!

NoWordForFluffy · 02/05/2020 11:44

Ah, that would be why I've not come across it! Bearing in mind 2m isn't really enough, I don't know how much difference 1-1.5m would make? Is there any scientific analysis about any difference it would make?

I do think that people are now so conditioned to 2m that they wouldn't want less of a distance though.

Freethefrogs · 02/05/2020 11:46

The 2m isn't practical imo. Where I live in London it is impossible to stay 2 m away from people unless you walk down the middle of the road.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/05/2020 11:52

Ah, weirdly adding 'Radio 4' to my search brought up this article from The Independent which refers to it in scant detail re commuting. I'd seen the headline of the 'commuters to take temperature' story but hadn't seen it in conjunction with relaxing the distance.

On most / all public transport you have to nigh on sit on top of the people next to and opposite you, so you're way closer than even 1m distance. I hope they keep insisting on WFH for those of us who can, as the trains I go on are also filthy!

woodencoffeetable · 02/05/2020 12:04

wrt to children passing in covid-19, christian droste camevto the conclusion that they do. but about a third less than adults.
when my dc goes back to school in 2 week's time only the teachers & cleaning staff are allowed at the building. teachers will have a plastic sheet curtain between themselves and the pupils.
no school lunches
one way system in school corridors

and: parents are not allowed within 50 m of school entrance.

Wehttam · 02/05/2020 12:13

Relaxing the 2m is probably down to economic pressure rather than scientific guidance. The airlines, retail, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, public transport etc etc all rely on us being in close proximity in order to maximise profitability. Thankfully we are behind the countries loosening their restrictions so hopefully any sudden spikes they have we can learn from.

Air conditioning needs strong clinical research on its ability to spread the virus though. Queueing in a supermarket under a blower above the door or being a staff member working under it could be fairly dangerous.

mrshoho · 02/05/2020 12:34

thanks for that link @MollyButton. My town had 155 covid deaths per 100000 people. The total population is est 250000 very diverse both in ethnicity and socioeconomically. The deaths I personally know of have been in healthcare, retail, police, carehome resident, retired accountant, retired teacher.

pocketem · 02/05/2020 13:19

Sorry for the daily fail link, but it's good to see Europe starting to open up again. This is Barcelona this morning

EmeraldShamrock · 02/05/2020 13:27

@pocketem Oh god those pictures terrify me. I'm not sure I'll be comfortable around so many people ever again.
Do you think pubs and bars will return packed like before Covid19.

pocketem · 02/05/2020 13:45

I'm not sure I'll be comfortable around so many people ever again.
I can empathize. Strange how our cultural attitudes can have changed so much seemingly permanently in just a couple of months. Austria has reopened stores like IKEA - I can't imagine being willing to go there even though I would go at least once a month before lockdown

I don't like being physically close to people at the best of times but I definitely don't want people outside of my children and mum anywhere near me now. I can't imagine wanting to go shopping anywhere busy.
