www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/apr/24/coronavirus-detected-particles-air-pollution

Okay, just doing a quick catch up on the Guardian and found the above.....

No firm conclusions have been drawn and more research is needed, but this, if proven, would open a really, really big can of worms.

On one hand, environmentally, it would force huge changes to manufacturing and transport etc, which would be a positive in some ways and pleae the climate concerned. But, implementing those changes would mean huge economic upheaval, and until changes were made, we couldn't restart the world economy and would have to shut down more of it, with extended lockdowns until the potential for harm was reduced massively.

My other thought, is that although I am in favour of transparency and the public being informed of confirmed risk, I can't help but feel releasing this information before a conclusion has been properly drawn and the whole issue peer reviewed and tested could lead to a bit of panic. I really am conflicted.

EmMac7 · 24/04/2020 15:43

There is a clear correlation between levels of nitrous oxide pollution and epicentres: Lombardy, Madrid, London, Belgium, The Netherlands, New York, heck even Ecuador. So I could believe it. It might even explain why my home county of Kent is faring so badly.

Spikeyball · 24/04/2020 15:45

"But why would recent dates be complete? Surely they are likely to increase in coming days."

But not by much. The bulk of 'today's' are from 2 days ago with a smaller number yesterday and then increasingly smaller for up to around 5 days ago. It is unlikely the total for 2 days ago will go much beyond 400 and yesterday is likely to be similar.
If you look at the graph each day you can see it.

Spikeyball · 24/04/2020 15:48

So meant to say the data is for England but I would expect the others to have a similar pattern.

HeIenaDove · 24/04/2020 16:15

The cynic in me thinks that the radio silence in the Daily Briefings about the antics on Westminster Bridge two weeks on the trot is so people think "well they arent observing the rules so i wont either" then its easier for them to shift the blame.

Frompcat · 24/04/2020 16:17

Surely if people were infected via pollution particles then we'd have even more cases? I live just off the south circular in SE London which is insanely polluted. I haven't had it and nor has anyone I know.

Have people seen this latest NHS / Paediatric advice, really useful

Sorry let's try again:

https://www.rcpch.ac.uk/sites/default/files/2020-04/covid19adviceeforparentsswhenchilddunwellorrinjured_poster.pdf

Interesting to note that it says if your child is unwell, it's unlikely to be Coronavirus, hadn't seen / heard that anywhere else.

RigaBalsam · 24/04/2020 16:56

The link isn't working for me strawberry

RigaBalsam · 24/04/2020 16:57

I am interested in the insect repellent being handed to troops. Really interesting

StrawberryJam200 · 24/04/2020 16:58

@RigaBalsam yes sorry, my second go at it seems OK.

RigaBalsam · 24/04/2020 16:58

Thank you

SistemaAddict · 24/04/2020 17:06

Ok, so they don't seem to have noticed the people who aren't abiding by the lockdown.

Why are the deaths being reported as 600+ when it was 700+ earlier?

EmMac7 · 24/04/2020 17:09

The government seems to be choosing the additional deaths reported by Wales. Guess they aren’t people. 😐

EmMac7 · 24/04/2020 17:09

*choosing not to count

SistemaAddict · 24/04/2020 17:20

Ah, they have mentioned the 2-3% increase in travel.

NettleTea · 24/04/2020 18:05

Ive definately noticed that there is ALOT more traffic on the road. Ive been driving to and from my work at not particularly rush hour times - around 11 am and coming home about 5.15, and there is tons more traffic on both journeys

You can tell your friend she's really weird when she has AIDS

Frenchdoors1 · 24/04/2020 18:42

@Butterer

What!!
Do some people really think it couldn't happen to them Confused

Humphriescushion · 24/04/2020 19:31

@EmMac7 what happened? Did they leave them out? Missed the update on the tv.today. I could not fathom the figures from sky news today though, they did not seem to add up.

Focusanddetermination · 24/04/2020 19:52

I don't think so Derby. Young couple around 20, with baby maybe 8-10 months. Almost always 1-2 cars outside not theirs. It will be someone who looks like an aunt arriving, mum and baby go out with her, come back, while they're away dad goes in/out his mum's house opposite, mum returns and her friends arrives, stays for half hour but aunt leaves... I've seen quieter train stations.

mac12 · 24/04/2020 19:59

Re air pollution, this study from Cambridge links area of high air pollution with increased cases & fatality - but it’s more along the lines of lung inflammation as result of air pollution increasing the Severity of disease
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/environment/2020/apr/21/preliminary-study-links-air-pollution-to-coronavirus-deaths-in-england

EmMac7 · 24/04/2020 20:31

@Humphriescushion

One health board in Wales reported 84 deaths that hadn’t been previously counted. For whatever reason they didn’t opt to include that in the daily U.K. count.
