Hi All - on hold to Sainsbury’s and want to make you aware of their unsanitary delivery to vulnerable shielded customers

I’ve just come back from sanitising a grocery delivery for a vulnerable person (on lung transplant waiting list). Sainsbury’s delivered shopping without bags and left in a common hallway that various people walk on: including loose unbagged fruit and vegetables (melon, onions etc)

Making you aware in case it’s your parents and other loved ones on the receiving end of this great customer service

did OP name the other items, I was expecting mushrooms or lettuce, at least.

Fruit and veg is not grown or stored in sterile conditions prior to delivery anyway... The shop and delivery van will probably be just as grubby as a communal hallway so I doubt it makes a difference...

Since this all started, if I'm expecting a delivery I leave boxes and/or big reusable bags open outside of my door so if the store have ran out of bags to send my shopping in then they can just transfer my shopping into the boxes/bags on my door step.

If Sainsbury's ran out of delivery bags and the customer hasn't placed anything outside of their door for their shopping to be placed into, what other choice does the delivery driver have but to leave shopping on the floor? Hmm

I don't think the driver should be blamed here. They are keyworkers too, risking their lifes to bring food to you all. I would blame the actual supermarket and their rules on bags.

If it happened, I'm not getting the big deal. The food was never going to be anything less than washed/bleached and whatever else the cool kids are doing these days. Or are you saying it may not have been washed had it not been left on the ground? Not a chance!

I've had brilliant service from Sainsbury, until 2 days ago.

I opened the door expecting to see the carrier bags on the step, and the delivery person halfway down the drive, waving. I was greeted with 3 crates of shopping, some bagged, some not. I was told that I needed to unpack it myself, fair enough I thought, I'll wash well afterwards.

However, each time I emptied a crate the driver removed the empty one, coming right up to me. I should have said something but was too surprised at the time, he seemed a bit bad tempered.

It was quite upsetting really, and nothing like the normal service. I do think that after 5 weeks of totally self isolating though that I may be over reacting a bit.

I'm getting delivery from Asda for same reason and notice it said something about not using bags too and need to use own bags as would be left un-bagged

The order comes in bags for life at the moment. the driver will just leave them at your front door. They just dont appear to have updated their website. Same as is says to give unsuitable substitutions back to the driver but at the moment they arent taking returns.

I know that Asda delivery had stopped using bags in general, but they are using them again for the duration of COVID.

Part of the issue is the driver arguably shouldn'tve been let into the communal hallway and then unpacked the stuff without seeing anyone (if a neighbour let him in they could've done something with it.) Is the communal hallway not locked? :/

If your friend needs someone to deal with the delivery when it arrives, ideally it needs a friend/family to wait for the delivery when it arrives of course, or what is the driver supposed to do in general?

But he shouldn'tve done that unless maybe the delivery details by the customer were that he leave it in the hall.

Either way, it sounds like the driver was a bit crap- I expect that Sainsbury's would usually be using bags for the duration like the other supermarkets. So IDK what happened there. I'm surprised it left the depot unbagged, I'dve thought it would be bagged there.

Either way, not good- I hope you get a decent resolution.

OP you are massively, hugely overreacting. I realise these are stressful times but really? Really? Chill out.

If this is all genuine then really, it’s annoying. It’s not disgusting or unsanitary. Do you not peek your onions?

Make your mind up - was it in a common hallway or on the pavement outside the house?

Did it really happen at all as you seem unable to remember simple facts?

It would have taken a driver far longer to have delivered food without bags..Communal Hallways are a big risk for tampering/theft.
Especially id open to the street...My friend who lives in a converted into flats old house has found strangers going through the post...
Drivers are delivering late into the evening, and everything is surely washed before eating anyway.. ??

No. I always had Ocado for years and the drivers never bring the crates.
They just got about 4-5 bags in each hand, drop it on my door step or even inside my half way( before this they would even offer to bring into my kitchen) but I never wanted them to walk in so doorstep is perfect.
However yesterday Tesco driver just stacked up the crates and watched me to empty them.
I even had to move the crates myself.
The last one had 6 bottles of water( heavy) so I had to get DH to lift it for me out of the crate.

I had a delivery from Tesco recently, and nothing was bagged.

Lesson learnt - I'm going to leave some bags/boxes outside my door next time so the delivery person can effectively repack them when taking out of his crates.

Removing the option to select bagged deliveries where I live was supposed to help the environment, but it only really worked when they used to come into your home and put the food onto the kitchen table etc.

Onions and melons are already 'wrapped' in their skins. Loose fruit and vegetables where you eat the skins I wouldn't like on a communal floor personally, even though I wash them. Most of these, like tomatoes for example, come in a bag or you have an option of buying a bag or buying them loose though. Anything in a packet is fine.

Sounds like they just ran out of bags and if there was no box or bags left at the front door then I don't see what other options they had, maybe knock, step back and request a receptacle, but they may be told just to knock and leave groceries for vulnerable people, rather than expect them to come to the door?

I had one Tesco delivery in crates which I had to unpack quickly on the doorstep and one from Asda delivered in bags.

What you describe is not ideal, but as you washed it all anyway, it doesn’t really matter.

So what? The best thing is to leave a big box or a couple of boxes for the delivery people to put goods in.

Most of us will sanitise anything we buy anyway and I doubt the un-bagged Sainsbury's goods are different to that of any other company. Some of the things will be in packages already., eg sausages, minced beef, chicken portions. A carrier bag makes little difference apart from being useful to put rubbish in.

Not rude, just disagreeing with you. I've not used Sainsburys online for a while but they were excellent when we did.

You're making a huge fuss about something, that has clearly gone wrong, but is not the norm.

Wouldn't just the phone call to customer services have been sufficient?

The orders I've had from Asda have also been loose, but the driver has at least waited and allowed us to empty the crates into our waiting shopping bags, although I didn't realise they do this so the 1st time I used them (at the start of this pandemic) I didn't have any bags available and I had to unload everything on to my hallway floor as he couldn't wait.

Not sure what they'd do if we didn't answer the door quick enough.

Its a strange time and some supermarkets do it differently to others. I would be grateful to get my shopping tbh. Lots of orders have been cancelled due to lack of staff.

My Mum is shielding. The Sainsbo's delivery driver apologised for the lack of bags as they are apparently running out of them. So, to the doubters, not everything comes in bags all the time.

It's a bit odd they didn't have bags but you'd be washing the fruit and veg anyway so it doesn't really matter.
I love that in the middle of a pandemic, people are still complaining about the delivery drivers who are actually enabling the vulnerable to be able to stay at home. Sometimes I despair.

If the shopping was left in a communal hallway I would assume that the person lives in a block of flats. Given that the drivers aren't allowed to come into your property I don't see where else they could have left it. The trick with fruit and veg is to buy / order those which are already bagged then it's not an issue .
