Sainsbury’s - disgusting unsanitary delivery for vulnerable customers

Hi All - on hold to Sainsbury’s and want to make you aware of their unsanitary delivery to vulnerable shielded customers

I’ve just come back from sanitising a grocery delivery for a vulnerable person (on lung transplant waiting list). Sainsbury’s delivered shopping without bags and left in a common hallway that various people walk on: including loose unbagged fruit and vegetables (melon, onions etc)

Making you aware in case it’s your parents and other loved ones on the receiving end of this great customer service

But it wasn't left on the pavement. How did the food get into the hallway? Did the driver post it through the letterbox?

Twickerhun · 18/04/2020 13:50

Was it not in crates? Onions get peeled and melons can be washed. Hand washing and not touching your face will help stop the spread. I can’t see the major drama myself

Sennetti · 18/04/2020 13:51

lol its not likely to be the bloody drivers fault....he doesn't pick/pack does he!!

the crates delivered in will also have been in several peoples homes, never washed just re-used

people need to take some responsibility for their own stuff.....next you'll be wanting them to sanitise the packaging!!

viques · 18/04/2020 13:52

Onions, carrots, potatoes and other roots/tubers grow in the ground. In soil. Hot line to god needed I think.

hm246 · 18/04/2020 13:53

@Witchend I thought that too. If it was a communal hall it could of been someone passing to see what they could take.

Truist · 18/04/2020 13:54

My DH is shielding ATM and we have had excellent service from Sainsbury's online (when we can get a slot!)- all order in free bags now, driver rings to say here, leaves in porch then knock on the door and they won't drive off until we acknowledge them - plus drivers have gloves etc. We still discinfect the shopping. Sounds as if something's gone awry after delivery or someone else has rustled through the shopping?

Orangeblossom78 · 18/04/2020 13:55

I'm getting delivery from Asda for same reason and notice it said something about not using bags too and need to use own bags as would be left un-bagged

have not had it yet though but wondered when it said this

It said only using bags for click and collect- bit strange. will see when it comes

myrtleWilson · 18/04/2020 13:55

So the shielded person saw the shopping was unbagged and was able to take the licence plate of the driver - but not yell at them to ask why they'd left unbagged shopping outside their door..?

And why would customer services need the licence plate anyway - surely the store would know which van was delivering to which property?

ChipotleBlessing · 18/04/2020 13:55

Can you explain how it happened? Did your relative ask for contactless delivery and let the driver in to the communal hallway? And then the driver just emptied the crates on to the floor there?

ScarfLadysBag · 18/04/2020 13:57

'Disgusting' is a bit strong. It's not like the delivery driver shat on it.

SisterAgatha · 18/04/2020 13:57

I believe you, I don’t shop with sainsburys ever again after awful experiences on at least occasions. They won’t care even if you can get through to customer services either.

SisterAgatha · 18/04/2020 13:57

4 occasions

TemoraryUsername · 18/04/2020 13:58

For goodness sake. They probably ran out of bags at the shop and that's nothing to do with the driver. We've been getting deliveries (vulnerable household) and the first week or two were bagless - we left washing baskets, empty boxes and crates outside for them to leave them in - still do, but then sainsburys updated policy to use bags again so the bags go in our boxes and baskets for ease. A piece of loose ginger ended up half way down our driveway in a flower bed randomly 🤣 but I just washed it with soapy water like I do with all the delivery at the moment, especially loose fruit and veg.

They aren't eating melon rind or onion skin, (and think of the places they grow and how many grubby customers have picked them up and put them back on the shelf before you pick them up normally anyway) - they're not supposed to be washed and sanitary, that's your job. The whole point of deliveries for the vulnerable is no contact, and the drivers are busy doing as many deliveries as they can so that you CAN get a delivery slot at all.

I have so much love and time for sainsburys delivery drivers and all the unsung heroes behind the scenes.

Just tell your parents to leave boxes, crates or whatever they have outside the door just before the delivery slot next time.

Sargass0 · 18/04/2020 13:58

Cynical ploy to get people not to use Sainsbury's so OP gets all the best slots?

NCforthisMarch · 18/04/2020 13:58

Driver just threw from crate onto floor it seems

For clarity:
I did not go to sanitise this because of it being on the ground, I sanitise everything going in the door due to this shielded person’s high vulnerability (ie taking responsibility to protect my loved ones). Was shocked to see shopping unbagged and alerted Sainsbury’s when I eventually got through (as received bagged orders normally)

My concern is : what would happen if I wasn’t there (plenty of shielded people don’t have local friends/family to do things for them), and if they are doing this, what other unsanitary practices are going on.

It was Hendon store and I’ve been told they will be in touch: hoping they will speak to the driver of course

Agree with others about the communal hall/neighbour theory.

One of mine has taken to opening my post and deliveries. When I asked him why on earth he thought it was ok to do that, he said he was 'only being nosey'.

Wolfiefan · 18/04/2020 14:00

If you weren’t there? Then I’m guessing the vulnerable person would bring the shopping in, sanitise it and then wash their hands. You’re being really OTT.

NCforthisMarch · 18/04/2020 14:01

Sainsbury’s Customer service tracked the licence plate & we will be trying another supermarket in future :(

ViciousJackdaw · 18/04/2020 14:01

@ScarfLadysBag Grin I needed that laugh, thanks Flowers

bringbacksideburns · 18/04/2020 14:01

How did they get into the communal hall? Did they not ring the doorbell to say the delivery was there?

Did you not arrange for someone to meet it at the other end? They would not have been able to leave the pallets there as they were using them for other orders and are on a strict time limit.
They wouldn't be able to go closer so what else were they supposed to do?

TheGreatWave · 18/04/2020 14:02

How did you get the license plate number? You don't get sent that like with Ocado?

OneHanded · 18/04/2020 14:03

It’s not unsanitary.. I don’t think you realise how things are stored before they reach the shelves

Carolduckingbaskin · 18/04/2020 14:03

@NCforthisMarch am sure they’re very sorry to lose you Hmm

Wannabangbang · 18/04/2020 14:04

I have had deliveries from Tesco and waitrose and it's all bagged for the publics safety and the drivers safety. Not having it bagged is a big risk for both the customer and the driver as it takes longer to offload, meaning coming into closer proximity and also too much touching of the products and to then put them in a communal area even worse. I know the items will be sanitised usually by the recepient, as clean all products but the the fact it's been on the floor is plain disgusting and also risky for driver spending more of his time unloading into property. I would definitely complain

enjoyingSun · 18/04/2020 14:04

I'm getting delivery from Asda for same reason and notice it said something about not using bags too and need to use own bags as would be left un-bagged

Our order said the same from Asda - and then came in bags anyway. I think it makes the deliveries quicker.
