So we are predicted to have the highest death toll in Europe, due to systemic errors made by this government. Do you trust the government to get us out of lock down safely?

I don't. They've f**d up too much. NHS managers are begging for PPE, NHS workers are dying.

This government have really really let us down.

We are predicted to have 40,000 deaths by the end of this.

The only silver lining is is that Labour might get its act together now Keir Starmer is in charge. Things can't get any worse.

And if any tory bots start saying 'at least it's not Corbyn'.. Well save your breath. No one could have made a bigger mess than Boris and Co.

I don't think the government acted quickly enough

When should the gov had acted?

Devlesko · 17/04/2020 16:16

Only 40,000 I read 66,000.
Yes, it's a shower of shite from the government.
They tried to balance the economy/ loss of life and got it wrong.
Then tried the sympathy vote.
People love good old heroic Boris though, whatever he proposes post virus, will be popular.

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 17/04/2020 16:17

I dont know about comparisons to other countries as we never tested but it seems likely we have had maybe a million infections?

If we have had a million infections then 14,000 deaths isn't really that many proportionally is it?

PicsInRed · 17/04/2020 16:17

Momentum Labour are awful. Thank fuck they weren't in power when Covid19 hit our shores.

Honestly, some of these Labour posters are more religious than the Tudors.

justanotherneighinparadise · 17/04/2020 16:18

Op you’re bitching about a virus that caught EVERYONE by surprise. China is currently hoarding PPE so it’s a global issue trying to access it. From what I’ve read the UK did fuck up by not getting in on a large European PPE order but I didn’t read all the specifics to know if it was Brexit related or a different bureaucratic reason.

China could absolutely have helped by not covering this up in the early stages. But I’d also accept that even then I don’t think many countries would have reacted quickly as the last few potential pandemics have petered our.

Lastly the reason I talked about developing countries is that whilst our death toll might end up being the worst in Europe, it’s going to be nothing by comparison to the suffering that’s going to happen elsewhere. Africa has Coronavirus on their doorstep and also a devastating locust problem that could see all their crops be decimated. People stand a very real risk of starving to death whilst still battling a virus on top of Malaria and other terrible diseases.

I for one feel extremely grateful to be living in the UK.

Neonyellow · 17/04/2020 16:18

Absolutely no trust whatsoever in this government, hence why took matters in to my own hands before being told what to do.

Sadly very little trust in a lot of the British public's behaviour too.

It's fucking depressing.

tontie · 17/04/2020 16:19

Their plan is still to infect all young people and school children so hundreds of them will die.

Really that's the plan?

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 17/04/2020 16:20

You said we were predicted 40000 deaths. Which, let's be honest, wouldn't be too bad considering the last bad flu season we had around 35000 people died.

A leading oncologist has said that there could be up to 60,000 excess deaths from cancer if we lockdown for too long as well.

Also, people seem to forget that all of the government advisors would have been the same whichever government was in power.

Bool · 17/04/2020 16:21

Oh FFS OP

tontie · 17/04/2020 16:21

They tried to balance the economy/ loss of life and got it wrong.

What is the number of deaths that's acceptable to you?

Greysparkles · 17/04/2020 16:23

I wish people screaming for longer harder lockdowns would engage their brains to things like this 😔

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/04/2020 16:23

We locked down at a similar stage as Italy. I am pretty disappointed with the handling of this crisis and the herd immunity theory. Due to population density in England, it wouldn’t be surprising if we are the worst hit. That said it’s far far to early to tell. This is only the first wave unfortunately.

Northernsoullover · 17/04/2020 16:24

@tontie probably a week sooner..I'm not calling for the governments blood. I have friends in Spain, Sweden, France and Italy. Every government is under scrutiny. PPE is in shortage worldwide.
I also acknowledge in my post that some people were and are lacking in personal responsibility.

Tattiebee · 17/04/2020 16:25

Africa has Coronavirus on their doorstep and also a devastating locust problem that could see all their crops be decimated. People stand a very real risk of starving to death whilst still battling a virus on top of Malaria and other terrible diseases.

Unfortunately most people are oblivious in their privelege and don't give a crap. Also those who wanted an earlier lockdown have no idea of the toll it's taking and will continue to take here.

Bool · 17/04/2020 16:26

@Mummyoflittledragon herd immunity is not a ‘theory’. It will simply happen whether we like it or not.

Baaaahhhhh · 17/04/2020 16:28

This is pure conjecture at this time. France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Spain et al all have similar death rates. Honestly there was not that much difference between what any of them did, and at what point we all locked down. We locked down at the same time as everyone else did in their curve, yes, we could've locked down sooner, but I don't think it would have made much difference.

Look at what is happening in Japan now. 5th largest economy in the world, fantastic health system, well funded, they are asking people to donate raincoats for PPE. This is a pandemic of epic proportions OP, I would like to have seen you do better or different.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 17/04/2020 16:29

Yes.

Bool · 17/04/2020 16:29

@Northernsoullover There is zero reason for locking down sooner. The only reason we are locked down is to sloooooow this thing down so we don’t overwhelm the NHS. The NHS isn’t overwhelmed so there is no reason we should have locked down sooner.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/04/2020 16:29

Greysparkles
Alternatively we could have learnt from other countries, taken a radical approach, locked down early and traced infections. This would have contained the and allowed cancer patients to keep getting treatment.

Idk if the public would have supported it. We definitely would need a rather more persuasive and committed leader at the helm. My understanding is countries led by women or with women in highly influencing roles have fared far better. Boris otoh sees women as a potential shag... or unshaggable.

Baaaahhhhh · 17/04/2020 16:30

FFS - What utter nonsense.

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 17/04/2020 16:31

herd immunity is not a ‘theory’. It will simply happen whether we like it or not.

Exactly.

And the more people who are infected and then gain immunity, the slower the transmission will become.

Which is why I don't understand countries who locked down really early before the virus had any chance to spread at all, because it means that when they lift their lockdown there will be very little immunity in the population and therefore the virus will once again have the chance to rip through the country?

The balancing act is not just about the economy but also about managing the spread of the virus.

Boulshired · 17/04/2020 16:31

We are also probably amongst the unhealthiest countries in Europe. There are so many variables yet to be examined in the aftermath.

Newgirls · 17/04/2020 16:33

I don’t trust or like BJ and husband cabinet.

I do trust whitty and Vallance.

The uk is a transport and business hub and honestly I think the figs could be worse - the nhs is remarkable.

Of a population of 66 mil there are just a few thousand ‘rule’ breakers - amazing compared to USA for example.

Pros and cons.

Newgirls · 17/04/2020 16:33

His not husband!!

Northernsoullover · 17/04/2020 16:33

Isn't Germany about to lift restrictions? I'm wondering how they will keep a lid on it.
