Neighbour abusing vulnerable delivery slots - what to do?

Doeeys · 14/04/2020 12:26

Need advice on what I should do...since the lockdown began, my neighbour receives on average 3-4 large online deliveries from Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco, this usually occur on consecutive day's - this week she has had them Sunday (Sainsbury's), Monday (Tesco) and today (Asda). She is in her mid 40s and has asthma and has been classed vulnerable, however she often goes out during the week to do top up shops as I see her unloading shopping from her car. She has also contacted the local volunteer group to also get 3 large 6pints of milk when she only has herself and one 7yr old. What is concerning me is that there are really vulnerable and elderly people out there that can't even get one delivery slot and she has had 10plus deliveries since the lockdown and it appears she is abusing the system. I have a small 6mth old baby and I am still going out as I know there are people out there that are truly vulnerable and need these extra priority services. What are your views on this and what would you do?

If so great. But does she need four deliveries a week?

Well, that'd depend on how many you are shopping for and how many are in the households, surely.
She could be a FB group volunteer for all we know - some people collect lots of stuff to distribute and donate to vulnerable families for example.
Why do some always jump straight to conclusions of "greedy pig hogging all the slots s'not fair?"
I just don't get the mentality lol and I'm really glad I don't.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 14/04/2020 14:27

She may not be abusing the system. The rules for slots change so fast that some of them may have been set up weeks ago, whereas now forward slots are much more restricted.

If you were lucky enough to have got delivery slots, with all the talk of people not being able to get them now plus the future being uncertain, wouldn't you stock up a bit? Also, you never know what will be out of stock or missing from a delivery. Maybe she's just hedging her bets to make sure she gets what she needs.

There's loads of free online courses you can take at the moment. Why don't you do that instead of spending your time spying on the neighbour and reporting their activities.

jimmyhill · 14/04/2020 14:31

Sainsbury's slots have not been limited to vulnerable people for weeks. We're not vulnerable and we've been getting deliveries for several weeks.

RuffleCrow · 14/04/2020 14:32

To be fair she may have a whole extended family of vulnerable people she's shopping for.

Even if she hasn't, by doing nothing you'll be allowing Karma to do its work. A house full of expired and rotting food is it's own 'reward'. And life lesson.

......
What a wonderful suggestion! Spot on, Joliany.

MintyMabel · 14/04/2020 14:33

because if they could get out of the house in the first place to get food, they wouldn't need your neighbour to get it from them in the first place, they'd just go out and get it themselves, surely?

Getting in your car, going to one house to pick up a load of shopping is entirely less risky than being exposed to a queue full of people for an hour then wandering round a store where people are not sticking to the 2m advice.

My parents are vulnerable but not shielding. They can get there but I wouldn’t have them anywhere near a supermarket. I’d be ok with them picking up shopping from a relative who was following the advice.

MintyMabel · 14/04/2020 14:34

Sainsbury's slots have not been limited to vulnerable people for weeks.

I tried on Thursday. Got the same message as always, you need to register as vulnerable.

LastTrainEast · 14/04/2020 14:36

"If so great. But does she need four deliveries a week?" well tesco has an 80 item limit and a limit of 3 of many items. Also they run out of things (getting better now)
80 isn't a lot when 3 carrots counts as 3 items.

LastTrainEast · 14/04/2020 14:37

just checked and Sainsbury is still off limits to me.

AngryRedhead · 14/04/2020 14:39

She’s a Mogwai. Don’t let her eat after midnight!!!

ChipotleBlessing · 14/04/2020 14:40

Yeah, that’s not happening.

andyoldlabour · 14/04/2020 14:41

We have a neighbour who is doing a very similar thing - two big supermarket deliveries a week, they are in their fifties, just a couple, no children, do not leave the house to give food to relatives.
Last week they put out five black bags of rubbish compared to our half bag.
We have been unable to get any online deliveries and have to risk going to the local shop - we wait outside for it to empty then one of us goes in.
There is so much food waste at the moment, due to greedy, selfish people.

jimmyhill · 14/04/2020 14:42

Sainsbury's deliveries reopened for us on 27 March! Not many slots available, and they can only be booked at 2-3 days notice. Also, can only book them via the website, and not via the app.

CherryBakebadly · 14/04/2020 14:42

We are booking on the Sainsbury’s app. Might be a regional thing.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 14/04/2020 14:45

I find the whole inconsistency between regions/supermarkets etc etc very very frustrating. Sainsburys not open to non vulnerable for us and no hope whatsoever of a click & collect slot either.

Branleuse · 14/04/2020 14:45

She's clearly shopping for other people too. Leave her alone and mind your own business

MagnoliaJustice · 14/04/2020 14:48

You need to go and sit in the back garden, with a good book. Stop spying on your neighbour! You have NO idea of whether she's stockpiling, binge-eating or (most likely) shopping for others.

MintyMabel · 14/04/2020 14:52

There is so much food waste at the moment, due to greedy, selfish people.

There really isn’t. That’s an urban myth.

You appear to suggest your neighbours have bought tons of food and are happily throwing it away. Highly unlikely unless they have some kind of mental illness.

We have 8 bags full of rubbish generated this week. We’ve cleared the loft, the garage and our spare room. Our food waste is less than usual because we are eating leftovers and have time to plan and cook meals much better than usual. We didn’t generally waste much but e.g a pack of ham would be opened for sandwiches at the weekend and not finished before it had to go out as we’re not great at taking sandwiches to work.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/04/2020 14:53

Ive had a few deliveries myself, hope my neighbours are not judging me

They may not be - but I certainly am vodka.

Nat6999 · 14/04/2020 14:53

Neighbours would think we are having excessive deliveries, we had Sainsburys & Morrison's in a week, we have been at my mum's since Christmas as I have been very poorly, my mum is 81 & gets a priority slot from Sainsbury's, I have fallen lucky & been able to get a slot at Morrison's, whatever doesn't come from one delivery, we order on the next.

andyoldlabour · 14/04/2020 14:57

"You appear to suggest your neighbours have bought tons of food and are happily throwing it away. Highly unlikely unless they have some kind of mental illness."

How do you explain the five black bags of non recyclable rubbish then?
It is impossible for a couple to use that much food in one week.
Are you by any chance my next door neighbour Grin

Snowflakes1122 · 14/04/2020 14:58

Wow. OP, I think you need to step away from your curtains. It’s a bit disturbing you know everything they a have done this week. It’s on par with stalking this obsession. Shock

MamaBearLockdown · 14/04/2020 15:01

How do you explain the five black bags of non recyclable rubbish then

the same way you can explain the piles of rubbish everywhere in the country. Tips are closed, and half the country is on a massive spring clean mode.

Hoggleludo · 14/04/2020 15:03

I have an invisible illness. To be fair I'm not getting that much shopping. But I've been given the vulnerable slots on sainsbury and Asda. (Asda has been amazing to be fair)

I have told all my neighbours if they need anything to let me know. I get 1 shop a week. My neighbour gets me some milk and fruit occasionally
However we only have a few houses on my road. We are all pretty close. We have parties 4 times a year. So it isn't a problem for me

She is probably shopping for others.
