Flights to resume from June 17th. Anyone looking forward to their flights?

Couple of airlines have announced that flights shall resume from June 17th.

www.dailypost.co.uk/whats-on/trips-breaks/tui-ryanair-jet2-announce-date-18068971.amp

I actually came across the article on Facebook and as I scrolled down the comments, I came across the magical September month brigade again.
Schools to resume in September maybe but flights as well? Wouldn't airlines go bust by then?
Also surprisingly I came across lots of comments from NHS workers(can see on their profile photo with their uniform and slogans)saying they are still looking forward to their holidays in June/July/August after all this.
Lots of keyworkers from other sectors as well were also among the ones who are still being optimistic to have break after this.

Personally I am looking forward to my flight in June. My parents live in another country and my father has a terminal disease and I would very much like to see him soon. I am also a citizen of the country and that country relies heavily on tourism, so most probably borders will be open ny June latest.

Anyone else still optimistic about their holidays/flying to your homecountry?

Tbh plane travel as it was i dont think will ever return to what it was and it shouldnt. Anyone else enjoying the birds again.

"Tbh plane travel as it was i dont think will ever return to what it was"

Why on earth wouldn't it? I can see that maybe business travel would decrease since working from home is probably going to be a bigger feature of business, but there is a growing middle class in most of the developing world. You're deluding yourself if you think that airlines won't rise to meet the demands of those people who want to travel as we in the west have become used to.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/04/2020 11:15

More scaremongering @londonrach

thewinkingprawn · 11/04/2020 11:20

I work in travel (still hanging on in there - just!). The Italian tourist board have indicated that August is most likely to open the borders to tourists based on the information they currently have.

Not really, more worried about whether DH will still have a job in few months.

londonrach · 11/04/2020 11:23

You both misunderstand me on purpose. Plane travel shouldnt return to what it was as the effect we had on the environment. Short plane travel shouldnt be allowed and people who can zoom meetings etc should do that rather than travel. Each time we get on a plane it should be heavily taxed so no cheap flights again. The world after lockdown is going to be interesting and i suspect better in alot of ways as people now appreciating the little things more and their health.

Shehz21 · 11/04/2020 11:27

@londonrach Not really and don't see why not
Confused

@MrsJBaptisme I hope he does. And I hope so for DB too.

@thewinkingprawn This is interesting.

Agreed, @londonrach.

@TheClootieDumplin That is so unbelievably sad and I am so so sorry for your loss.
Thank you for sharing this intimate piece of information about your life though.. It has given me newfound peaceSmile

I have been optimistically saying our family annual holiday abroad which is late June might go ahead - we will go if the Foreign Office advises it is safe so may be there is hope yet....oops saw the Italian comment - well as we are going to Italy then it sounds very unlikely they will let tourists back in June then. let us hope I can get my deposit back. No holiday for us then this year just not one penny of state financial help (sole trader over £50k profits) and masses of new taxes to look forward to next year. Better get back to work.....

LoveIsLovely · 11/04/2020 11:42

@londonrach Never going to happen I'm afraid.

thewinkingprawn · 11/04/2020 11:43

@Xenia - June does seem unlikely but as I say that was the Italian tourist offices best guess on a conference call the other day. Things do change all the time...

TheStuffedPenguin · 11/04/2020 11:55

I'm writing off the rest of 2020 as regards flying anywhere .

Rafflesway · 11/04/2020 12:23

@TheClootieDumplin. Can I just say your post really got to me.
How absolutely devastating for you.

However, have you perhaps considered the possibility that your mum allowed herself to pass whilst you had popped out for a short while?
I am an old bugger now and I could WELL understand someone in your mum’s position doing that to save you the sight of her taking her last breath.

Please be kind to yourself! You sound like a fantastic dd. Flowers

@thewinkingprawn I am recently retired travel industry -35 years - and am so keeping my fingers crossed for you. I have many friends still in the industry - many who are self employed homeworkers - and they are facing financial ruin very soon. ☹️

notimagain · 11/04/2020 12:26

So according to this citizens of the UK are not allowed into France currently?

That's very definitely not correct...but a UK citizen needs to have a very good reason for both entering France (e.g. their primary residence is in France) and a good reason for making that specific journey (e.g. essential worker travelling to/from place of work).

spatchcock · 11/04/2020 12:29

@LoveIsLovely

"Never going to happen I'm afraid."

I think it's foolish to speak in absolutes. No one knows what's going to happen from one day to the next. Airlines all over the world will go bust without govt intervention, and with other demands on economies it's difficult to tell how much of a priority passenger freight will be.

turnandfacethenamechange · 11/04/2020 12:30

Apparently we can fly home in June now. Dreading a bit TBH 🤪

LoveIsLovely · 11/04/2020 12:33

@spatchcock It is not speaking in absolutes to say that people are going to continue flying in much the way they do now. There is a demand and where there is a demand, it will be filled. That's capitalism. Some airlines might go bust and things will be quieter for a couple of years, but the market fulfills demands.

MrsWhites · 11/04/2020 12:37

@Mintychoc1

👏 👏 👏

I’m so glad someone else feels this way! I assume that some people on Mumsnet have direct line to Downing Street/The White House, as they seem extremely well informed that no world travel will take place until at least 2031! Never mind the economic impact!

Shehz21 · 11/04/2020 12:44

@turnandfacethenamechange where are you currently now and where would you be flying to if you dnt mind me asking?

@MrsWhites I wonder which brigade we would be referring to.... the "September magical month" or the "FULL LOCKDOWN UNTIL JANUARY 2021"Grin

We're in West Australia. There are a handful of direct flights that recently came up for sale in the next couple of weeks but we have so much stuff to sell before we go that isn't going to be an option. Direct flights start again in June. You can go in May via about three different airports but various legs seems to get cancelled a lot and as someone with a crippling fear of flying (and currently with a safe roof over my head) we're not in a mad rush!
