Flights to resume from June 17th. Anyone looking forward to their flights?

Couple of airlines have announced that flights shall resume from June 17th.

www.dailypost.co.uk/whats-on/trips-breaks/tui-ryanair-jet2-announce-date-18068971.amp

I actually came across the article on Facebook and as I scrolled down the comments, I came across the magical September month brigade again.
Schools to resume in September maybe but flights as well? Wouldn't airlines go bust by then?
Also surprisingly I came across lots of comments from NHS workers(can see on their profile photo with their uniform and slogans)saying they are still looking forward to their holidays in June/July/August after all this.
Lots of keyworkers from other sectors as well were also among the ones who are still being optimistic to have break after this.

Personally I am looking forward to my flight in June. My parents live in another country and my father has a terminal disease and I would very much like to see him soon. I am also a citizen of the country and that country relies heavily on tourism, so most probably borders will be open ny June latest.

Anyone else still optimistic about their holidays/flying to your homecountry?

@crazydiamond222 immunity passport sounds like a realistic solution especially since some countries rely so heavily on tourism! I hope they can do something about this.

@LoveIsLovely That is very true. I agree most people unlike myself cannot just quaratine on arrival due to time and money restrictions. I hope they find a solution to this soon such as immunity passport mentioned upthread.

@Harakeke Not New Zealand but I hope it doesn't have such a grime ending to so many business. It's heartbreaking to say the least. Well this situation is horrific in itself so I hope it doesn't leave too many negative lasting impact on your country.

@chocolatesaltyballs22 There is absolutely no judgement from most of us do not worry. And you have zero need to feel guilty. And hopefully travel will resume as soon as it's safe to do so. Like mentioned in my OP, I have read comments from many HCP and other key workers who really want a break after this nightmare ends and are still holding out hope for their upcoming holidays. No shame there.

CNN was reporting last month that "most airlines" will go bust by the middle of the year without government intervention.

I think we're living day by day at the moment, no one can possibly tell you what will be happening in May or June.

forrasee · 11/04/2020 09:32

Everyone saying it wont happen, there are airlines and flights still happening now. I've friends that have flown from the UK to within central Europe in the last week.

The more concerning thing is that they weren't asked why they were travelling, if they had symptoms, or to isolate once they arrived!

MrsJBaptiste · 11/04/2020 09:32

DH works for the of the airlines mentioned in this article so we were aware of this date a few days ago. I really wouldn't get too excited and pin your hopes on flying by mid June. I think every industry (airlines and others) are under pressure to give a timeline as to when things will be ok again but really it's just a possible time, e.g. as we're seeing with the return to school dates.

@Freefalling123 Honestly there will be nothing to worry about when flying after all this! The amount of checks on the grounded aircraft surprised me but the planes will be fine when they're good to fly again.

choc71 · 11/04/2020 09:33

I've got flights and a hotel booked in Turkey for October 1/2 term with my best friend, leaving DH and the children at home. Please please let it go ahead! If not, I'm going to camp out at her house, buy belly dancing dvds and Turkish coffee set.

HopelessLayout · 11/04/2020 09:33

@Shehz21 Have you checked with your home country's consulate in the UK? For my home country I am still allowed entry as a citizen with the condition that I quarantine for 14 days. There is one flight a day operating with the national carrier. Direct relatives of citizens of my country are also allowed entry under those circumstances. Bear in mind you will not be able to get travel insurance to cover CV-19.

LoveIsLovely · 11/04/2020 09:34

"it’s not that, it’s more that he doesn’t want to get stuck anywhere away from home."

Right, but the majority of people who that happened to were pretty foolhardy in travelling when they did. I feel bad for them but I don't understand the mentality of travelling when the advice is not to. It's not as though this came totally out of the blue and countries slammed the borders down.

People were still talking about travelling on here when several countries had closed their borders. Madness.

middleager · 11/04/2020 09:35

*Is this a joke? No one will let us in. Where do you think the virus is going to go????? No one will be going on holiday this summer get real.

Also if schools go back before summer there will be a mass refusal from teachers. It’s not safe. We have not even hit the peak yet s
Nor is there any plan on how to get rid of this.*

Well said.

Shehz21 · 11/04/2020 09:35

@Summersunandoranges my DB works as a flight attendant for Emirates as well and he hasn't flown yet(admittedly he is sick-not covid19)but he sent me a link of the outbound flights from Dubai.

My flight is for the 30th of June and have not had any information about cancellations yet from them?
My DB says there is a chance I might be able to fly. I hope he is not trying to just keep me optimistic so I am able to see dad.

I think there is a glimmer of hope, not for June but for after that. There are countries (Taiwan I think? Germany?) which have set up testing booths which can diagnose covid 19 very quickly even in asymptomatic people. As things calm down, if this can be set up in other countries then there is the possibility that people can fly having been tested. And if you add in testing for antibodies to see who has already had it, that improves things further. People like Valance are talking about this kind of mass testing as we move out of this stage of the virus. It is being planned for. The more other countries show this can be done successfully the more pressure will be on our government to do this. Germany has put everyone else to shame in particular with how they've done this.

I know this is all very uncertain and no one yet knows how things are going to go but I find people on MN far too quick to go 'we're all doomed. No one can ever leave their houses ever again.' It's not helpful. I don't think flights will be resuming in June but there will be a lot of people working to get the industry up and running again somehow, in some form, even if that's in a limited way for a good while. Personally although I desperately don't want people to suffer financially, I think something needed to happen to stop people flying. The planet couldn't take all the damage we were doing to it. Something needed to change. But I sincerely hope you get to see your father op. You must feel desperate to. It's not a straightforward issue.

maddy68 · 11/04/2020 09:37

That is the first date however it's still provisional and subject to change. Also it depends on other countries borders. I read an article yesterday saying that Spain is likely to ban resorts opening to allow nationals to be able to access beaches etc and social distance this summer They haven't been allowed out even for exercise there so that seems reasonable , they did suggest that remote inland areas might be open to tourists but it was under discussion

Summersunandoranges · 11/04/2020 09:37

@crazydiamond222 immunity passport sounds like a realistic solution especially since some countries rely so heavily on tourism! I hope they can do something about this

That’s sounds like a really bad idea. It would create a tier system of healthy and not healthy people, they would get treated like leper’s

Dongdingdong · 11/04/2020 09:37

And yet there were some posters on another MN thread recently trying to justify this by saying “the virus has spread everywhere now anyway”. Unbelievable Hmm

PaddyF0dder · 11/04/2020 09:38

Private companies will have to give some sort of date, but that doesn’t mean it’ll happen. And it is not really up to them.

I think it MIGHT make sense to have relaxed the lockdown WITHIN countries by mid June. But international travel seems foolish.

Shehz21 · 11/04/2020 09:38

@choc71 That made me chuckle! Turkey is such a beautiful country, I hope when things get back to 'normal' you are able to visit. I loved Antalya and Istanbul.

We had a holiday booked to France in early June. We have cancelled the accommodation and got a refund but the flights are with Ryanair. They just say if they cancel the flight we will get an email. I don’t want a credit note as we won’t be able to use it this year. Ryanair are totally unhelpful. Is anyone else in a similar position?
I don’t want to travel even if the flights go ahead until this is all over.

HopelessLayout · 11/04/2020 09:40

List of regulations for every country is published here:

Summersunandoranges · 11/04/2020 09:41

She fingers crossed for you! I know there are in and out bound flights but those at the moment are for stops and no one is entering Dubai. Lots of people going back to Hong Kong . Although I may be wrong!

Are you on family seats?

RosesandIris · 11/04/2020 09:43

So according to this citizens of the UK are not allowed into France currently?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/04/2020 09:44

I foolishly applied for a BA voucher for our May half term flights. I should've held out for a refund ... as I imagine prices will rocket for at least the next year

Well they've not rocketed for September at least; I've just moved flights and the prices were the same as for June, which follows their usual pattern

I find people on MN far too quick to go 'we're all doomed. No one can ever leave their houses ever again.' It's not helpful

Shehz21 · 11/04/2020 09:45

@Noooblerooble Yes desperate is the wordSad
And your post is very reasonable.

@HopelessLayout
They have advised to wait until another 3 weeks before they can give out any kind of advice and everything reported is still being subjected to change.

@Summersunandoranges I didn't quite think about it this way. This is true. I do hope they find a solution though. The booths being set up to diagnose covid19 as mentioned by Nooble seems the most reasonable solution I've come across so far.

billybagpuss · 11/04/2020 09:47

We have a big family holiday booked to the states in July balance due next week, I’ve been trying desperately to cancel it at a loss of quite big deposit because whilst I know if I pay I may get the money back I don’t want to run the risk of having to go. Can you imagine trying to do social distancing in Vegas!

TheClootieDumplin · 11/04/2020 09:47

How are airlines going to deal with grounded flights say until the virus is 'eradicated'?

They just do. Its very expensive to keep them grounded, its costs more to have them mothballed than it does to have them flying, but they'll stay parked until its safe to take passengers again.

My not who are flight deck crew and an engineer know they won't be taking to the skies anytime soon unless its to bring medical equipment etc from abroad.

Mintychoc1 · 11/04/2020 09:47

OP I would avoid posting these questions on mumsnet. There are mumsnetters who are seemingly waiting, 24-7, so pounce on threads like this and destroy any hope you might be feeling. They get a weird perverse pleasure from telling others that NOTHING is going to resume for a VERY long time, certainly not this year, possibly not even this century!

Hope and positivity is all we have at the moment. We have no definite answers. No one has inside knowledge, because there’s no “inside knowledge “ available.
A lot can change in a few weeks, and all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and follow the lockdown rules.
And stay away from the Coronavirus threads because the harbingers of doom will drain any joy you may have in your life! It’s what they do.
