Flights to resume from June 17th. Anyone looking forward to their flights?

Couple of airlines have announced that flights shall resume from June 17th.

www.dailypost.co.uk/whats-on/trips-breaks/tui-ryanair-jet2-announce-date-18068971.amp

I actually came across the article on Facebook and as I scrolled down the comments, I came across the magical September month brigade again.
Schools to resume in September maybe but flights as well? Wouldn't airlines go bust by then?
Also surprisingly I came across lots of comments from NHS workers(can see on their profile photo with their uniform and slogans)saying they are still looking forward to their holidays in June/July/August after all this.
Lots of keyworkers from other sectors as well were also among the ones who are still being optimistic to have break after this.

Personally I am looking forward to my flight in June. My parents live in another country and my father has a terminal disease and I would very much like to see him soon. I am also a citizen of the country and that country relies heavily on tourism, so most probably borders will be open ny June latest.

Anyone else still optimistic about their holidays/flying to your homecountry?

I just want to go and see my mother. And my family. That’s the first thing I’ll do when we’re allowed to fly again. I really, really wish I had gone before the borders closed.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/04/2020 09:50

Well said @Mintychoc1

sonjadog · 11/04/2020 09:50

I am hoping that there will be an ease of restrictions by the summer, and that people will be able to fly if they can prove that they will self-quarantine for two weeks when they arrive (i.e. that they aren't just tourists). I am hoping that my mother will be able to visit me this summer following these rules. But whether or not it happens remains to be seen, of course.

Splodgetastic · 11/04/2020 09:50

I would have thought that for many countries you might need a health certificate to enter, like you need for some visas.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/04/2020 09:51

Again, well said Mintychoc1 Smile

TheClootieDumplin · 11/04/2020 09:51

I’m not getting on a plane until I can be sure they’ve all flown a few times first! Imagine being first on a plane that’s been sat grounded for months.
Ps. Don’t like flying, not scared or nervous, just don’t like it.
—misses point of thread—

For gods sake. Really. What do you think is happening to the planes when they're sat on the ground?

Did it ever occur to you that maintenance is still done?

BarbaraofSeville · 11/04/2020 09:57

They've worded it badly as it implies a certainty that no-one has at this point.

It would have been better to say 'all flights cancelled until 16 June at the earliest, we will review the situation for flights after that date nearer the time' because I suspect that is what they mean.

MadisonAvenue · 11/04/2020 09:58

@Bagelsandbrie We’re in the same position with Virgin. We’ve got a holiday in LA booked for late May and I’m holding out for a refund, and I’m feeling quite stressed about it. I know that currently they’re offering to rearrange for a later date but the dates which I know we could do next year, including the same date next year, are almost double what we’ve paid.

Our son had two holidays booked with Jet2, one in May and one in June, and the May one was cancelled by Jet2 and refunded the middle of last month and the June one last week so he’s now waiting for the refund for that.

mummymeister · 11/04/2020 10:00

I can really understand that some people feel so desperate at the situation for whatever reason that they cling to the "all over by June" or whenever type reports. but the reality is that this pandemic is following the course that you can expect from a pandemic. the virus doesnt spread, people spread it. thats people all congregating in a busy airport, squashed in together in a plane with recycled air that cant possibly be properly cleaned between flights, travelling from areas of high disease to low or vice versa. International travel is how the disease spread in the first place and it needs to be - NEEDs to be - the very last thing that we open up. Otherwise we enter into an endless cycle of disease and lockdown. There is no getting back to normal. We need to get our heads around this and start planning for how to live our lives going forward. I refuse to sugar coat this for people who arent resilient because that leads to false hopes, expectations and lies. Look at the various papers and books written on pandemics, all the info we need is out there. And yes its shit but its our shit and we have to start dealing with it not doing the "all over by June" lie.

Shehz21 · 11/04/2020 10:01

@Mintychoc1 That is so very true unfortunately Sad.
Fortunately there is still some voice of reason.

@Hellokittymania I feel the same.. I didn't want to let my colleagues down as they are much more senior in age than me and with health complications. They were still working despite the crisis, it didn't feel right for me to leave at the time. In hindsight I wonder if I took the right decision....

I don't even know if this is the right thing to tell you but I will in the hope it helps you somehow with the decision you had to make.

I sat with my mum for days before she passed away and when her time did come I missed it because I went to the bathroom. I was away from her bed for no more than 6 or 7 minutes and in that time she passed away. I still say to myself - I shouldn't have gone to the loo. But of course I had to go.

ilovebrie8 · 11/04/2020 10:10

@Mintychoc1 spot on and well said...so many on here want to do that and bring people down ...Confused

billybagpuss · 11/04/2020 10:20

@MadisonAvenue having spent most of this week on the phone to virgin I think you’ll be ok they’re currently working towards some point in June, it’s impossible to phone them as they’ve changed their phone system so it cuts you off if you’re not travelling in the next 72 hours but they are monitoring the text line as I had one from them.

Lelophants · 11/04/2020 10:24

And here comes the second wave Hmm

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 11/04/2020 10:27

We were planning to go to Dubai in November - I am sceptical that is going to happen. Get ready for a very dumbed-down Christmas, everyone!

PineappleDanish · 11/04/2020 10:28

Reading comprehension seriously lacking in some posters. "Couple of airlines have announced that flights shall resume from June 17th."

No they haven't. they have just announced cancellations up to that date, decision about what happens after mid-June with flights is as yet undecided. That's not the same thing at ALL as flights restarting.

We are supposed to be flying long distance in August. I'm still very 50:50 about whether we will. On the plus side, we are all recovering from coronavirus so in theory should be immune. But that's not certainly yet. Also need to think about what happens w my parents if they catch it whilst we're away.

DogInATent · 11/04/2020 10:40

The issue is not whether airlines want t fly, or whether they'll be allowed to fly, it's the conditions that the Arrival country will place on passengers landing there.

If you're a dual national of the country you'll be landing in you have an advantage, but several countries are making it a requirement to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival. So a quick visit to catch-up with family doesn't make sense until those types of restrictions are lifted.

I don't see many European carriers starting up regular services before Q3 for non-essential travel. I'm not sure many destination countries are going to trust UK visitors for quite a while due to the comparative weakness/ineffectiveness of our control measures.

worriedwellworrier · 11/04/2020 10:42

Out of interest I tried to book a return flight to New York with BA next week and it was allowing me to pay, nothing at any point to say they weren’t flying. Scary

bananaskinsnomnom · 11/04/2020 10:42

Me and a group of friends had a booking at a UK holiday park for July - we have made the decision ourselves to not go (even if they are open, it’s way to soon , we wouldn’t want to be sharing mass facilities and staying in a house where we don’t truly know how clean it is) - thankfully we have been able to move it to next year, same week, at no additional cost.

The big one I have is a 10 day trip to the states booked with a friend at the end of October. Way to soon to call it. Thankfully the balance isn’t due till the first week of September so there is plenty of time to see what the hell happens.

I go back and forth, hopeful then dismissing the whole idea. If it’s safe to you, I will go. If I can go but will have to spend time in quarantine either side I will not go. It’s something I’ve looked forward to for so long. I don’t think there harm in people hanging onto something positive in this mess.

17th June is around when the the 12 weeks for the shielding group is up. That could be where the date has been pulled from. I still don’t think people will be going away in June or July though.

This will not see a decline in people flying. It will be back to normal levels at some point. You can’t put the genie back in the lamp. Too many people are used to flying, too many people and countries rely on flying, it’s too big a part of how the world functions these days for it to slow down.
I would love us to keep it slowing down - we can see the positive effects for our planet already. It’s fixing itself. But we wont keep it like that.
Not just because people want to keep their bargain two week all inclusive to Majorca an option. But because we are nearly all far to dependent on it.
New Zealand was discussed. They rely heavily on tourism. How else can you get to New Zealand? Not very easily at all. So many countries depend on tourists to keep afloat. Companies require international travel. People’s jobs are dependent on international travel. We all rely on imports that come from international travel - and no one will say we can change that, because the price of everything will rocket and we can’t deal with that.

So those saying it won’t return to normal, it will. Seriously, of course it will. It’s just a question of when.

Porcupineinwaiting · 11/04/2020 10:44

@DogInATent good point. It will be interesting to see whether insurance companies take that into account when deciding whether to issue refunds.

DogInATent · 11/04/2020 10:49

@Porcupineinwaiting
Insurance companies don't issue refunds, holiday companies do that. Insurance issues compensation. There was a lot of confusion over this when it all started, people putting in insurance claims before they'd asked the holiday company for a refund.

Rosesandiris

There are still ferries going from Dover to France and back again, although if you go onto the P&O site, it states that you have to have some business or have a residence in France to go there.
This shows all the up to date crossings, all around the World. The Straights of Dover are looking pretty busy at the moment.

Never going to happen. How do they even know the countries will accept inbound flights by then?

I wouldn't be booking or paying for anything!
