823 deaths in England and 47 in Scotland it's absolutely grim and being reported in such a matter of fact way, it feels as if we've become desensitised to death.

refraction · 11/04/2020 14:29

Agree with that Charlie.

I remember getting upset when Italy were at 133.

CharlieTangoBanana · 11/04/2020 14:33

Final total is 917 for the UK one of them just 11 years old.

I feel paralysed by stress today, can't do anything useful, can't concentrate on anything, didn't sleep last night it's a total fucking nightmare

Mittens030869 · 11/04/2020 14:34

I agree too. And the numbers don't include deaths in the community or in nursing homes. It's so horrific. Sad

EmeraldShamrock · 11/04/2020 14:49

There doesn't seem to be the same outcry over the UK at all in comparison to Italy. People are definitely desensitized in the mindset awh well it is just the elderly. Sad

TheCanterburyWhales · 11/04/2020 15:13

I saw a FB post earlier asking how come when Italy reported 950 deaths the redtops went for the jugular saying what a disaster the Italian measures were proving to be (this coincided with Boris going on about Mother's Day) and now the UK has reached those numbers the same redtops are saying it's evidence that the govt's strategy is working.

Reastie · 11/04/2020 15:23

I totally agree with desensitised comments to the figures. There was a huge outcry when Spain and Italy were showing similar numbers and here they’re just reporting them in a matter of fact way. We were hearing so many stories from Italy of doctors and nurses at breaking point, not enough beds etc etc, it seemed so dire and scary. Here all I hear is the problems about protective items for workers and that the nhs is working hard and hasn’t yet reached capacity. Is this actually the case? Are the nhs truly doing better then Italy and Spain, or are we just not hearing about it? Surely we can’t actually have spare beds at a time Italy was at breaking point? There was a man who worked at the London nightingale hospital on the radio yesterday. He didn’t say anything of what was going on in there as said he wasn’t allowed, but was in tears saying people have to stay home. The media sometimes seem to distanced from the U.K. figures I wonder if they’ve been asked to report it like that.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/04/2020 15:30

Today's chart. 917 deaths today in the UK, bringing the total deaths to 9,875.

@CrunchyCarrot that table is very scary. Why is there not being more of a deal made of how our death figures are that much worse than Italy’s? And Italy’s lockdown was stricter than ours too, if lockdowns help why aren’t we doing more?!

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2020 15:47

I've had her DH on the phone now, he's said he will make it very uncomfortable for me to live next door to him if I don't turn a blind eye.

That's intimidation and worthy of reporting in its own right especially since another neighbour has reported them.

We've had two police helicopters fly over head today. Not a terribly unusual sight round here, but we they are almost certainly looking for gatherings rather than traffic problems or car thieves.

CharlieTangoBanana · 11/04/2020 15:59

@RedToothBrush He is an arrogant twat at the best of times, thinks he's better than anybody else on our road and doesn't give a fuck about anyone else. It turns out that six people reported him which made me feel better. They've also been named and shamed on the village spotted fb page.

refraction · 11/04/2020 16:06

*Sky are doing that again today with their
' inside the red zone report'

As interesting(sad)as it is in a way. Surely we have it as bad here but its not reported the same way.*

boatyardblues · 11/04/2020 16:07

Glad to hear the police intervened, Charlie, but consider logging what your neighbour said now in case of trouble down the line.

The government graph starts at 50 deaths. Makes Uk not look at steep as Italy. Though it's getting close.

CharlieTangoBanana · 11/04/2020 16:10

I've been pondering all day about the Nightingale hospitals and if the government believes we are at or near the peak why are they forging ahead and building more.

These hospitals represent a huge investment for the government and they seem to be bringing more and more online.

My theory is that they intend to relax the rules knowing that it will cause numbers to rise again and that the Nightingale's will become the covid dying rooms allowing our hospitals to resume their work to treat the non covid sick and injured.

They will allow the general population out of lockdown on a voluntary basis ( no comeback) but in doing so it allows the economy to begin to rebuild. It will be the less well off who will be most at risk followed by the old and sick. The wealthy will be able to continue to isolate themselves until there is a vaccine.

refraction · 11/04/2020 16:12

Holby City has donated Ventilators to NHS according to the BBC.

You couldn't make it up.

MollyButton · 11/04/2020 16:16

The Nightingales are there because even if we are "just about coping now" and this is the peak. As people need to stay in hospital for 10+ days after being admitted, then the capacity is needed for all those recovering cases.
So if we have X cases today, of which Y are new cases. If people just keep getting ill and need hospital at the same rate. Then tomorrow we will need X+Y beds, the day after X+2Y , and so on until 10 days when we need X+ 9Y.
And that is assuming a lot of things.

CharlieTangoBanana · 11/04/2020 16:16

@boatyardblues I have logged it and have a recording of the call. He's away a lot and although we're not best friends I've been friends with her for over 20 years, regular coffees, have keys for their house and always do lights bins etc when they're away. Drinks at Christmas etc, it's sad because that all ended today because they were prepared to put their own family at risk.

justchecking1 · 11/04/2020 16:17

If we use the government graph it puts us next to Italy's 10,023 so not much better even doing that

CrunchyCarrot · 11/04/2020 16:17

OMG it's Priti Smirking Patel giving the coronavirus update today.

I know, I had a WTF moment there. As long as they don't donate their 'doctors' as well!

SistemaAddict · 11/04/2020 16:19

Oh god, who let Pritti Snitti out of hiding?

Eeyoresstickhouse · 11/04/2020 16:20

Have you heard a more heartfelt speech as the PP is currently doing Hmm

God I just can't stand her. She has a resting smirking bitch face, and just no compassion or empathy.

refraction · 11/04/2020 16:20

Agree it did for a week or so though.

justchecking1 · 11/04/2020 16:20

We will still need the Nightingale hospitals. At the moment we are doing virtually nothing except Covid in our main hospitals. No elective procedures, no routine care. We can't keep doing that or people will start dying exponentially of non-Covid related illness.

We will end up having normal hospitals and separate Covid hospitals sooner or later so that we can get back to treating everyone else safely
