Why? Why oh why are people still coming here on holiday?

Devon. We have seen caravans and motorhomes and people obviously on holiday (canoe and suitcases etc on car roof, all that stuff; it's bloody obvious), bikes loaded with camping stuff....

We live 20 miles from the beach and none of us have seen a wave for weeks. DH spends half the day complaining because he can't go to the beach in this lovely weather as he normally does.

Thank goodness the market is not on, or we'd be over-run. Really worried as both dd and I are vulnerable (not extremely vulnerable) and dh freaks out every time he has to go out as our Designated Shopper that he'll bring it home to us.

Why are people such arseholes?

We're going to need road blocks!

If you are all staying at home I'm wondering how you are seeing all these hordes of tourists.

As for "reporting" second home owners, some of them may have gone there before the lockdown or even before 16 March when the earlier restrictions were put in place. And I've said this before on here, contrary to popular opinion most Londoners aren't loaded and they don't have second homes. So the vast majority will be in London and staying put.

There should be zero need for anyone to be on the road anywhere with a caravan or motorhome though - they're a very easy target for the police.

Movinghouseatlast · 10/04/2020 09:15

@Rosehip10 do you have property on Air BnB? You seem to know an awful lot about it so I assume you must also be seeing the communications from them.

It is my livelihood and I have lost it. My entire income. So I can only assume this has happened to you too. Its shit isn't it, losing everything you have worked so hard for? But I'm sure you, like me, have refunded people for their missed holidays.

But in case you don't have a property on Air BnB-

All bookings up to 18th April booked before 14th March have been fully refunded by Air BnB, ie me.

If people cancel later dates after 18th April.they still get a full refund from Air BnB, ie me.

The rules of the lockdown are very clear. No travel unless essential. If anyone had tried to book I would have refused.

@cologne4711

If you are all staying at home I'm wondering how you are seeing all these hordes of tourists absolutely agreed!

I live in Cornwall in a beautiful touristy town - there’s no way for me to witness the influx of tourists because I walk locally only.

11 shiny 4x4s with roofboxes in local supermarket car park yesterday. One parked near me with a Hammersmith parking permit on the windscreen.

Tonyaster · 10/04/2020 09:37

And shiny blonde women with Veja trainers who I don't know in the supermarket itself! Unheard of!

If you are all staying at home I'm wondering how you are seeing all these hordes of tourists Well I'm staying at home as much as possible but had to go out to get meds this morning, I've had one lot delivered for DH but local pharmacy couldn't deliver this one. Having said that I didn't see any tourists as far as I know. In fact my seaside town was like a ghost town although the local supermarket did seem to have alot of cars in the car park but I have no idea who they belong to.

Boredinthehouse · 10/04/2020 09:43

@Tonyaster Grin no wonder my DH was stared at in our local supermarket last week. We bought the car out of the county so the Reg isn’t local and we keep a roof box on the car too.

Most of my neighbours have shiny big cars, roof boxes and bike racks. Or VW campers as their main vehicle GrinGrin

Tonyaster · 10/04/2020 09:47

We don't see many roofboxes other than at holiday time! It's very wasteful in petrol to keep one on your car all the time.

If Stanley Johnson can pop to his second home in Devon the I expect lots of other will follow his example Has he? If he has he should be made an example of. Remember him saying if he wanted to go to the pub he would, wonder if he had any regrets when he realised how sick his son was, probably not if he has decamped to Devon.

I'm a bit concerned this morning. I had been relying on the fact that my parents (late 80s) are on a Scottish island and only residents are supposed to be able to get on the ferry. But this morning I've seen a post on Twitter from a resident of one of the other villages on the island saying that the island's second homes are all filling up fast. I suppose if you have utility bills for the second home that's been taken as proof of resident status and Calmac have had to let them on the ferry. Incredibly selfish. There's one small cottage hospital on the island and lots of the resident population are elderly and vulnerable. I'd like to think the Co-op would refuse to serve them, given that food supplies are precarious with the reduced ferry service. But I expect a lot of them have brought food with them.

Davespecifico · 10/04/2020 09:54

Popplios - you can report holiday makers to the police. They shouldn’t be there. Your bins story is outrageous.

tinytemper66 · 10/04/2020 09:58

I live by the sea...I live on the mountain and see the sea from my house. However I would have to drive 5 mins to access it so I haven't been down since lockdown.

PoppliosBubble · 10/04/2020 10:07

I can see the hordes of tourists as I can look out at my street and see how many cars there are. I live in an old fishing town, incredibly limited parking in the harbour bowl where I live and normally only one other permanent family on my street. We also have no garden so I’m taking the kids out for a walk every other day. To be fair though, most of the second home owners in my town are from the midlands or a few from the Home Counties. Certainly none on my street from London although may be different in other streets.

They have been reported, police go and give them a telling off but they know they can’t leave as they’d then be making another non-essential journey.

My boys are currently chalking our front doorstep which will inevitably piss off the bin complainers Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/04/2020 10:07

Sounds wonderful, tinytemper66. What wonderful views you must have. I love the sea.

Becca19962014 · 10/04/2020 10:25

I can see them coming in from my window. Almost everywhere has closed here for Easter (pharmacy and local shop being open one hour a day being the exception). All locals know this. So there's no reason at all for all the people queuing to get into where I live. The very hot weather we've been having here isn't helping nor it being on the news as that's attracting people as well.

Utility bills aren't recognised as proof of residency here - it's council tax bill only as second home owners get a different bill to everyone else - I don't know how it differs exactly, I think it's a different colour.

tinytemper66 · 10/04/2020 10:27

@Gaspode only if you don't look left and see the steelworks! 😂

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/04/2020 10:30

CodenameVillanelle · 10/04/2020 10:41

@Movinghouseatlast I have an Airbnb listing (my spare room)
The email say clearly that guests can request a full refund and that no new bookings will be allowed but existing bookings can go ahead if the host and guest both agree.

Obviously nobody is travelling and if anyone wanted to come I would be asking them nicely to cancel but it's not automatic

MinesaBottle · 10/04/2020 10:54

www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/moment-couple-staying-snowdonia-airbnb-18069561

A couple staying in an Airbnb in Penmachno (v pretty, small touristy village in Snowdonia) we’re confronted by a local. The owner of the house, who lives in France, claimed she was helping them out because they’d lost their accommodation...in Oxford.

champagneandfromage50 · 10/04/2020 10:57

They lost there accommodation? Yeah right

ivykaty44 · 10/04/2020 11:02

Council tax bills would have billing address alongside the house address - possibly, depends what information was given by the owner.

Gilead · 10/04/2020 11:05

I can see the increase in traffic over the pennines from my window.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 10/04/2020 11:21

I live next to a small campsite (yurts) near the New Forest.

Two weeks ago owner rocked up. A few days later the yurt man arrived to erect 2 more yurts. Man with kids arrived last week, and yesterday the owner’s son with his kids.

So nice the rules don’t apply to them. They had a bonfire yesterday and a bbq.

I guess we don’t have the problems here that places like Devon and Cornwall have. In terms of hospital beds (big hospitals nearby here)

It annoys me but I think that may be petty of me

Portulaca · 10/04/2020 11:26

Just adding this thought - people who are travellers normally are struggling to find permanent places they can see out the lockdown. Some of the caravans on the road might be because they have nowhere to go and are desperately trying to find sonewhere open to be safe Sad

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/04/2020 13:14

Plus if any holiday makers/ caravaners/ 2nd home owners try to get supplies from my local shops or garage, they're will get a mouthful from what im hearing!

"These are local shops for local people . . . " Grin

I'm surprised that small shopkeepers haven't been doing this from the start. TBH.
