Why? Why oh why are people still coming here on holiday?

Devon. We have seen caravans and motorhomes and people obviously on holiday (canoe and suitcases etc on car roof, all that stuff; it's bloody obvious), bikes loaded with camping stuff....

We live 20 miles from the beach and none of us have seen a wave for weeks. DH spends half the day complaining because he can't go to the beach in this lovely weather as he normally does.

Thank goodness the market is not on, or we'd be over-run. Really worried as both dd and I are vulnerable (not extremely vulnerable) and dh freaks out every time he has to go out as our Designated Shopper that he'll bring it home to us.

Why are people such arseholes?

We're going to need road blocks!

Supposedly places are being opened for keyworkers ...

Chochito · 09/04/2020 20:08

Why are there no road blocks?

Here in Spain people have been imprisoned for unessential travel.

itsgettingweird · 09/04/2020 20:08

Let down the tyres on their caravans and motorhomes WinkGrin

Although that just means they'll stay longer but they won't be able to travel about the town infecting everyone.

I love Devon. Ds and I would be going to Devon on a spontaneous camping trip during weather like this any other year.
We aren't even going to our beach 10 minutes drive away!

Ds has out his 1 man tent up in his room to camp in there instead Grin

Start building a wicker man?

Snoodleberry · 09/04/2020 20:24

Visit Cornwall issued a press release this week saying that they had visited any campsite, self catering etc that was still accepting guests, with a police officer, to suggest (enforce) and immediate closure. They were working on a list provided by local residents about any second homes etc, and apparently had great success. They still have the Gordon Ramsey problem though....!

yellowbluebell · 09/04/2020 20:25

Anyone who has packed up their car as if going on holiday is selfish beyond belief. And thick as pig shit. Entitled twats need to fuck off home.

Enough4me · 09/04/2020 20:30

No conscience that's why. They don't care that by coming to 'holiday' places they could bring the virus to us (I'm in Devon), don't care that locals are being careful and have not driven to beaches as these people are selfish fuckers.

I bet the Scottish Chief Medical Officer has a cushy job lined up with her rich mates lined up and will be back on a beach soon. We'd get fines, they get a bit of a talking to.

koshkatt · 09/04/2020 20:37

It’s mutated!!

It’s now Caravanovirus

Dreadful disease

This gave me a laugh!

MagnoliaJustice · 09/04/2020 20:41

How come Gordon Ramsey and family have been permitted to decamp to Cornwall and the Beckhams are nicely snug in the Cotswolds? Why do the rules not apply to them? I wouldn't wish anyone ill, but FFS this is serious business.

I live on the North Wales coast and have witnessed the police stopping cars and turning people away. I am also an NHS nurse, so am seeing first hand how devastating the virus can be.

Stay at home. Wales, Devon, Cornwall, Scotland, the Lakes, the Dales, the beautiful North East - it will all still be here in a few months. Let's get through this pandemic and safely out the other side before even thinking about holidays and day trips.

FenellaVelour · 09/04/2020 20:47

West Country (it’s not a bloody holiday)

1forsorrow · 09/04/2020 20:52

I'm in South Devon and it seems quiet, not that I've been out, but I can see the ring road from the bedrooms at the back of the house and it is quiet.

Think they will be disappointed if they come, everything shut except supermarkets, beach car parks locked, police checking them for crowds. Not worth the journey.

Pericombobulations · 09/04/2020 20:57

I despair too. We were booked for Cornwall this week but spoke to the agency before lockdown who offered us the move our booking to next year, so responsible firms are doing this. I have been watching webcams and the weather has looked lovely too.

However I have heard of one Cornish firm who are refusing to refund or move the bookings. People like me will remember and make a note to never use them as they clearly dont care about their staff or customers.

I thought after seeing a caravan had crashed this morning on the M5 that the police were stopping any obvious holiday makers but that most were avoiding the police if possible.

Its shocking and I sympathise with those of you in areas they are flocking to, but they clearly think the rules dont apply to them or they are clearly invulnerable to this, and they wont need the intensive care dept in the local hospitals!

PoppliosBubble · 09/04/2020 21:00

The people that have arrived on my street are all second home owners. I think one house is occasionally also lent to friends but mostly it seems to be the same people who turn up (and moan about my bins). My neighbours who do actually live here all year overheard one of the families having a strop because the marina wouldn’t let them access their boat. They’d driven all the way from Kent and wouldn’t have bothered if they’d known Grin. There’s certainly a lot of ill feeling about it at the moment, I think particularly as most of the second home owners seem to be 60+ so even more likely to get seriously ill.

Most of the caravan parks here are now closed. The ones that aren’t are mostly people who live in their caravans. Apparently they are kicking people out who don’t live in their caravans.

Jellykat · 09/04/2020 21:01

Have just read in my local paper there's police checks on main routes into my county (Pembrokeshire)..
Plus if any holiday makers/ caravaners/ 2nd home owners try to get supplies from my local shops or garage, they're will get a mouthful from what im hearing!

itsgettingweird · 09/04/2020 21:02

The Beckham were already in their Cotwolds home when lockdown started?

Srictlybakeoff · 09/04/2020 21:03

I hope they close all the snow gates on Scottish roads . It’s unbelievable. There should be massive fines for this

GCAcademic · 09/04/2020 21:08

My parents live in a touristy Cotswold village, and the police are having to turn away / issue warnings to families who have driven from over an hour away in some cases "for a day out". The village has a high proportion of elderly and vulnerable people. The selfishness is astounding. Some people really are carrying on like this is a fucking holiday.

Etinox · 09/04/2020 21:12

@PoppliosBubble you have the patience of a saint. Empty your bins in their garden. Fuckers.

I do wonder who disobeys rules so blatantly. Anyone on my street would be lynched if they went away. It’s a almost stasiesqie. In a good way Wink

fuckweasel · 09/04/2020 21:16

I live on an island that is a popular tourist destination. Thank fuck the ferry company now requires proof of permanent residence to buy a ferry ticket (obviously essential deliveries and key workers are allowed on).

eaglejulesk · 09/04/2020 21:17

People in camper vans are heading off to holiday spots here (NZ) - until the police stop them and make them turn back Smile

Really, you have to wonder about some people!

alltripe · 09/04/2020 21:21

The police were sat watching on one of the bridges over the A380 when I went to work this morning. Hopefully they were looking for obvious holidaymakers.

HighNetGirth · 09/04/2020 21:24

We had a delivery yesterday. The guy who came has been all over the country since the lockdown started. He said in areas where police are less prevalent, mostly rural towns etc. the lockdown is being widely ignored.

Maybe some people can’t see the risks because there are, as yet, few cases where they live. There could be a rude awakening for them come summer.

HeIenaDove · 09/04/2020 21:26

Its bloody selfish If we get a stricter lockdown because of the behaviour of selfish fuckwits like this...........they should be made to give up their online shopping slots to the people who have done nothing wrong but who will suffer as a result!

lljkk · 09/04/2020 21:26

20 miles from the beach sounds really far to me :)
