Why? Why oh why are people still coming here on holiday?

Devon. We have seen caravans and motorhomes and people obviously on holiday (canoe and suitcases etc on car roof, all that stuff; it's bloody obvious), bikes loaded with camping stuff....

We live 20 miles from the beach and none of us have seen a wave for weeks. DH spends half the day complaining because he can't go to the beach in this lovely weather as he normally does.

Thank goodness the market is not on, or we'd be over-run. Really worried as both dd and I are vulnerable (not extremely vulnerable) and dh freaks out every time he has to go out as our Designated Shopper that he'll bring it home to us.

Why are people such arseholes?

We're going to need road blocks!

I would like to know how they booked their holidays. If through any of the agencies I use, their holidays would have been cancelled anyway because the big agencies won't allow them to go ahead. I have had to block out three months on the instructions of one big agency. Another (whom I loathe, and only use in extremis) have also cancelled all my guests' bookings.

So how are these people actually managing to have holidays? Via private arrangement with owners? Or are they all second home owners?

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 09/04/2020 19:39

Air BNB?

Rosehip10 · 09/04/2020 19:40

Air BnB booking that had already been confirmed still stand - its was new bookings that were stopped until 18 april.

ChibiTotoro · 09/04/2020 19:41

@LockedinMadness this is not the fault of the police, purely the selfishness of people who apparently need more evidence than thousands of people dying each day as a reason to say at home.
Crime is still happening so the police still have that to deal with in amongst having to tell so called adults to go home.

Lynda07 · 09/04/2020 19:41

Airbnb have closed their rentals now, apparently.

Fatarseflanagan09 · 09/04/2020 19:43

People in rural areas should fill bins with cow shit and fling it at the dickheads who are selfish enough to think the rules don't apply to them.

andhessixfeetten · 09/04/2020 19:43

PoppliosBubble have you still got the note?

Movinghouseatlast · 09/04/2020 19:43

@Rosehip10 no they don't. Any old bookings are cancelled as all Air BnBs are closed. Everyone with a booking has been fully refunded. No new bookings are allowed either.

This has been the case for a few weeks now.

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 09/04/2020 19:44

Also West Country here (next county up from you) and I honestly don't understand why they haven't put roadblocks on the Avonmouth bridge and/or the A30/A39 yet. In both directions. If not at every junction of the M5 as a minimum. We had to go to Taunton earlier this week (genuinely - NHS related) and we made sure we had documents saying why we were travelling.

The eejits still insisting on heading south and west evidently haven't looked at just how many hospitals there aren't in this part of the world, nor at how many of them no longer have A&Es or only have part-time A&Es.....

AmelieTaylor · 09/04/2020 19:45

It's on the news now.

YinuCeatleAyru · 09/04/2020 19:45

Sykes cottages are refusing to refund anyone, so maybe all these holidaymakers have bookings with Sykes?

ReginaGeorgeous · 09/04/2020 19:46

People are so selfish. I live in the Midlands and saw one of my neighbours driving off towing a caravan this morning.

myidentitymycrisis · 09/04/2020 19:47

If I was living on one of these routes I would want to stand facing the oncoming traffic with a “GO HOME!” sign

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/04/2020 19:48

Blazing wicker men at the entrance to every town and village? I'd be infuriated by this. Selfish gits.

Viviennemary · 09/04/2020 19:48

Because they are selfish and don't think the rules apply to them. Like that Scottish Chief medical officer. Who should have been sacked immediately..

Rosehip10 · 09/04/2020 19:49

@Movinghouseatlast It was only last week that "instant book" etc was stopped so there will still be booking in the system.

andhessixfeetten · 09/04/2020 19:52

Booking.com seems to have plenty of places accepting booking for the Easter weekend in the Lake District.

Hotels are still open I think? Some people are engaged in essential travel.

marblesgoing · 09/04/2020 19:53

Same here. Live in a tourist area and can hear the traffic on the main road since very early this morning. Been busier today than any other day for cars and caravan movement here.
Fucking assholes

QuentinWinters · 09/04/2020 19:55

Errrrr maybe because it would fuck up loads of key workers using the motorway for their job? It's not all tossers on the roads you know.

Wolfgirrl · 09/04/2020 19:55

This made me laugh out loud 😂😂 I am from a small village in the SW, maybe we should all dig out our maypole outfits and flower crowns and treat them to our own version of Midsommar..? Grin

I'm fine with people moving here, holidaying here etc, but to come down here now when we have about 5 hospitals in the region is beyond arrogant and selfish.

Becca19962014 · 09/04/2020 19:56

Booking dot com here still have places to rent!! And yes we still have fuckers turning up. Supposedly, the rooms are for keyworkers. In which case why are they on that website? Nothing at all about needing evidence.

Fuckers are turning up here in the middle of the night to avoid road blocks.

I've been ripped to shreds on social media for posting about it because it's "impossible" and they must be "keyworkers".

I went shopping today and ended up sobbing at the queue (yes I know really embarrassing) and amount of food people were walking out with (think family of four each with a full trolley to flout the rules but staff could do nothing). The person who helped me was absolutely disgusted, it was shout midday and shelves were empty - no deliveries now until Tuesday because of being so rural and bank holidays. There are vulnerable people who now won't get their shop.

There's nothing open. NOTHING. All the touristy things, parks are locked, cemeteries (some are of historical significance so people visit for that as well as graves) locked and, 99% of shops are closed.

If caught walking by the beach you will be asked for ID proving where you live, outside a set distance you're warned, no proof you're warned, then fined.

Last time the fuckers turned up all you could hear was whining that nothing was open and how they wouldn't be back. The fact is rural places outside of tourist season barely have anything touristy running anyway, looking up where I live the one star type reviews are always from times everything is closed!

NettleTea · 09/04/2020 19:57

AirBnB are allowing people to cancel, but not cancelling automatically.
As a host Im thankful that people are cancelling, however until recently unless it was really close, they were not allowing hosts to cancel without penalty.
My kid is being shielded so I wanted to cancel all guests for the 12 weeks, but it would have cost me £50 per booking (and as they were weekends and only paying £200......
Also they will give us a small amount now towards the cancelled guests, this doesnt happen if we cancel them, so we have to wait and see if they do, or lose money.

So a host who doesnt care and a guest who has mamde a booking could, theoretically, still turn up. And until today they were allowing hosts to advertise their rural properties as coronovirus escapes - this is absolutel;y outrageous IMO and Im glad theyve slapped them down for that.

On the other hand we have been told that we have to close the cottage and glampingsite, but because we are on a farm and rated as agriculture, we cant access any of the grants made available for our industry, so I can see why someone who doesnt care might be tempted to take the money

Easilyanxious · 09/04/2020 19:57

Where are all these people staying are my holiday places closed . I'm in south west and not too far a drive from sea and we are normally there most weekends but we haven't obviously gone due to lockdown at moment

Becca19962014 · 09/04/2020 19:58

Hotels/caravan sites and b&b in Wales are legally supposed to be shut down. One hotel I looked at only had one room left...

AprilFloundering · 09/04/2020 19:59

We're all going to be confined for weeks and weeks because of this selfish arseholes.
