TUI low deposit - August holiday

Another holiday one - sorry!

I've got a long haul holiday booked for the end of August through TUI. So far I have only paid £250 but as this is part of the low deposit scheme, a second deposit payment is due at the end of the month of an additional £250.

I'm under no illusion that this holiday will go ahead unfortunately. Does anyone know what will happen if I don't pay this? I understand that they can go to small claims court but is this realistic under the circumstance?

It seems ridiculous for us to pay money for something we're highly unlikely to benefit from.

Thanks!

Were not paying our balance. I don’t trust this company and won’t be going with them again. They just want your money now to pay the refunds of those who have already had their holidays cancelled. They have this ridiculous deadline of the 30th June so if you are going in July or August you can’t change for free. The government have facilitated this. They and Tui know that no one is going on holiday on 1 July!

CaptainMerica · 23/04/2020 20:19

@Racheyg it is to Greece. I looked last week and it was 1.5k more, but this week it was roughly the same.

CaptainMerica · 23/04/2020 20:21

@Hairyfairy78 have you tried amending the booking through the website? I didn't expect it to work, but it did it with zero fees.

FizzyPink · 23/04/2020 20:51

I've just been trying through the website but it's having technical problems. Does anyone know what happens if the new holiday you change to is less, do you get the extra back?
And as we're due to fly on 19th July does this mean we can't change to next year for free?
I've just read some news reports today saying Greece isn't as hard hit and they expect to open up in July but as DP is self-employed and not able to work currently, he's not happy to take a full 10 days off to go on holiday so soon after he'll be back at work so we're keen not to go this year anyway.

HappyKatieA · 23/04/2020 22:18

I'm in the same position, we've just been able to amend without the fee.
We haven't done it yet though, it's another £400, which in the scheme of things isn't massive, but we're going to think about it.
Our balance of £4,200 is due 6th May, I don't want them (TUI) to have our money for a year.
We'll have a think over the next few days, but it's quite comforting to know we can amend it.

FizzyPink · 23/04/2020 22:21

When are you due to fly @HappyKatieA

HappyKatieA · 23/04/2020 22:28

@turnedouttoes we're due to go on 28th July, you?

HappyKatieA · 23/04/2020 22:29

Sorry, @Turnedouttoes

FizzyPink · 23/04/2020 22:34

Oh we’re 19th July so hopefully we can also change without paying a fee. The website won’t work at the moment for some reason but hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to do it without having to call then

Moondust001 · 23/04/2020 22:34

I really think that instead of asking random strangers on MN, half of whom are giving either incorrect or really dubious "legal advice" about contracts here, people should go to Martin Lewis's MSE site, which has verified factual information and not best guesses by a bunch of people who know next to nothing.

bigbadoldbag · 23/04/2020 22:45

I get that this thread is mostly about TUI but I just wanted to let you know how fantastic OnTheBeach were...we were due to go earlier this month and they gave us a full cash refund, no quibbles at all, before we were due to fly. Obviously the flight was cancelled but I didn't have to chase them at all, communication was fantastic and they reassured us at every stage and said they would never offer vouchers. Worth bearing in mind if you want to rebook.

FizzyPink · 23/04/2020 22:57

I’ve heard that a lot @bigbadoldbag as well as Jet2 being fantastic so will be rethinking any future trips with them

CaptainMerica · 24/04/2020 06:02

@HappyKatieA

When I changed my travel dates, the payment due date also changed to next year.

HappyKatieA · 24/04/2020 06:04

@CaptainMerica, yes, we had that too. At least it would give us breathing room...

ILookLikeAMonster · 24/04/2020 08:25

Yeah, I would never book with Tui again, had an email on 13 March stating cash refund in 3-5 days, still waiting..............................

FizzyPink · 24/04/2020 11:14

I just spoke to TUI on the phone after a 70 minute wait. The guy I spoke to said he could change our trip but it would be a £50pp fee as we're not flying until July. He said they're expecting to have an update for July bookings in the next couple of weeks which might include being able to amend for free so he advised the best thing to do would be to add an extra two weeks to our final payment deadline and then reassess then which is what I've done so we've now got until 10th May to pay when we'll hopefully have more of an idea of what's going on

Nearlyadoctor · 24/04/2020 11:38

@Turnedouttoes - I went on the website to play about re next year this morning and I can amend our booking to next year with no amendment charge as per a pp. We’re due to go to Florida on 24th August so we’ll past their current dates.
Albeit the cost of the holiday is £1400 more expensive Hmm

dingit · 24/04/2020 12:13

Inlooklikeamonster, it looks like refunds are starting to trickle through from the middle of March. We've just had our excursion money refunded, but not our holiday (7/4)

mommydragon · 24/04/2020 18:52

@Turnedouttoes I have the same issue... on app and website it says they can't find the booking number. Do you get the same error?

FizzyPink · 24/04/2020 19:01

Oh no @mommydragon my error just says there’s been a technical difficulty and to go back to the previous page. I can get the whole way through changing it until the final page and then can’t confirm it

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 25/04/2020 10:27

I’ve got £600 left of our low deposit to pay on the 27th. We was due to fly out on the 2nd Sep but I managed to amend it to the following September with luckily only £100 difference.

I’m still wary about sending another £600 to them incase they go bust etc, and also because I am on a payment holiday to my credit card so I can’t pay through that for the extra protection.

I keep swinging from just paying it and seeing how everything is into next year or cancelling it and rebooking when we know what’s what. (Whenever that will be)

Nearlyadoctor · 25/04/2020 10:47

@GingerFoxInAT0phat do you not now pay the rest of the low deposit in 12 months? That’s what I was hoping?

Inspiralcarpetry · 25/04/2020 10:55

I was on this thread feeling frustrated/worried about a Tui cruise refund (due to go 3rd April.)
Happy to confirm we have now had a full refund, phew.
I do feel so sorry for people having the dilemma now of paying for a holiday unlikely to happen and then waiting ages for a credit note/refund. Good luck all.

mommydragon · 25/04/2020 11:45

Our balance deposit is due on 27th for holiday end of July. I am getting this error when I am trying to go into Manage my Booking. Is anyone else experiencing the same? I am pretty sure I am entering the right details as I was able to log into the App with those details.

TUI low deposit - August holiday
GingerFoxInAT0phat · 25/04/2020 12:18

@Nearlyadoctor no I was hoping the same thing but they still want the rest of the low deposit this April. I have messaged them on fb because I couldn’t find an email address and don’t fancy ringing.
