TUI low deposit - August holiday

holidayheadache · 06/04/2020 23:45

Another holiday one - sorry!

I've got a long haul holiday booked for the end of August through TUI. So far I have only paid £250 but as this is part of the low deposit scheme, a second deposit payment is due at the end of the month of an additional £250.

I'm under no illusion that this holiday will go ahead unfortunately. Does anyone know what will happen if I don't pay this? I understand that they can go to small claims court but is this realistic under the circumstance?

It seems ridiculous for us to pay money for something we're highly unlikely to benefit from.

Thanks!

Anyone thinking about accepting the credit note rather than chasing for cash should price up for next year first. My exact holiday for the same dates next year is 1.5k more (family of 4 for 10 days)!

No way I'm paying the balance.

holidayheadache · 18/04/2020 20:29

@Cuddling57 thanks. Mines due next week so I'm interested to see what happens. No way I want to give them a penny. TUI are a mess!

@Cuddling57 please keep us in the loop and let us know if you hear anything from them.

mumofone2818 · 20/04/2020 09:36

I am the same and was to make a payment of £450 by the 8th April (my low deposit was £150), I never paid it because i'm waiting to see what happens & I haven't received anything from TUI yet about not paying it & it still shows my holiday is in so many days. We are definitely not going even if you are allowed to travel as we're worried it may still be around to catch, just waiting to see what they say!

mumofone2818 · 20/04/2020 16:54

I went onto the TUI app there & it let me change the booking to august 21, was an extra £250 all in but doesn't need to be paid now untill may 2021 with tbe rest of the deposit due april 2021. this way I now have plenty of time to pay it won't lose the deposit & if they do go bust like people are saying then will still get all my money back! Just incase other people might want to do this too though i'd update xx

Shortfeet · 20/04/2020 23:07

@holidayheadache

I am in exactly the same position as you.
Slightly different numbers.

Paid the low deposit in January, still owe £400 on the deposit - was meant to pay last month but didn’t.
Due to travel Early July

Got demand for final balance ( just over 2k ) Last Friday .
Was panicking exactly as you are. Wouldn’t mind paying it but was worried their refund promise was worthless if they go bust .

My solution was to move the holiday to late September this year. Same hotel , shorter trip - not ideal but also just over half the money and I don’t have to pay anything else for now.

Could this help you ?

Nearlyadoctor · 21/04/2020 06:00

@Shortfeet - did you have to pay a fee to move your holiday, bearing in mind it’s after the 30th June free amendment date they’re offering?

Shortfeet · 21/04/2020 08:36

@Nearlyadoctor
No.
No amendment fee.
Go to Manage my holiday page
Scroll down
There’s a ‘change your holiday ‘ button.
It was v simple.
The £ 100 I gave paid already comes off the total outstanding

Nearlyadoctor · 21/04/2020 09:03

Thanks @Shortfeet - I think I shall be doing the same.

holidayheadache · 21/04/2020 10:35

I've just looked at this... I haven't been brave enough to click through to complete as if I need to move to next year, I need to change some passenger details. Does it give you this option?

I've just gone to check ours and to rearrange for the exact same trip next year it's £500 extra. I think we'll pay our last installment and then look to use the credit note when it comes through for another trip next year as I'm not wild about going to the place we'd originally booked.

Out of interest is there anywhere anyone recommends that Tui fly to for February half term? We were tempted by NY at Christmas but it's about £1k cheaper than what we've paid so seems a bit of a waste when we could book through someone else plus no one knows what the situation will be like then.

Rollergirl11 · 21/04/2020 11:17

I’ve just had a reminder email from Tui saying that I haven’t paid the remaining deposit and to go to Manage my Booking online to do so. I still can’t access my booking either via the app or the Tui website so the only thing I can do is call them. But I’m not waiting in hold for hours to tell them I don’t want to pay anymore.

Not really sure what to do now.....

RingtheBells · 21/04/2020 11:44

I called them yesterday about 4pm as my card that my refund hopefully will go on was updated since paying, and I only had to wait about 25 minutes.

FizzyPink · 21/04/2020 13:05

Has anyone accepted the credit note with the 20% extra added? I’m wondering if there’s a catch to this but if not it could be a great way for us to rebook for next year

holidayheadache · 21/04/2020 14:01

I think the catch is that it's UP TO 20% so no guarantee @Turnedouttoes

@shortfeet I am trying to postpone my July holiday but get error that they can't find booking with these details. I think you were able to amend your booking because you were at the final payment stage, whereas our final payment if due early May. 🤞🏼I am able to amend the booking soon.

Shortfeet · 21/04/2020 23:09

@mommydragon
I’m not sure that’s the case as I am even able to amend my new booking which is not till September.
Check your booking ref number is correct and try again!

Rollergirl11 · 22/04/2020 11:07

It’s all kicked off in the press and on social media today after Which? has issued a report about travel companies illegally withholding consumers money with calls for the government to step in and help. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days....

holidayheadache · 22/04/2020 12:24

I've just seen the updated FAQs but they're not relevant to my situation!

OP posts:
Racheyg · 23/04/2020 14:19

We have just paid our balance for our holiday in July.

Feels weird knowing it won't happen though 😭

FizzyPink · 23/04/2020 15:11

I think we’ll be doing the same on Sunday. I don’t want to risk losing the money we’ve already paid by not paying but I’m also concerned it might go ahead but with everything closed or restrictions in place. So hard to know what to do!

CaptainMerica · 23/04/2020 15:22

Thanks @Shortfeet - I managed to change my July booking to 2021 with no amendment fee. The price had come down since last time I looked too, so it was a bit more but not too much, and I don't need to pay for a year.

I had been planning to cancel this weekend, and lose the deposit, so that's £800 (maybe, eventually) saved. Cheers!

holidayheadache · 23/04/2020 15:31

I've had a reminder that the rest of my deposit is due! Still don't know what to do!

OP posts:
Racheyg · 23/04/2020 19:18

@Turnedouttoes that's how we felt. We had paid £800. We are still going to go on holiday . We just don't know when

@CaptainMerica can I ask where your going? We checked our holiday same time nxt year and it's an extra grand 😭😭😭

Jedstre · 23/04/2020 19:49

The remaining deposit due on Saturday. I was just going to cancel and lose £200 but I’ve realised that was the low deposit and another £600 is the full deposit. Now, same as others I don’t know what to do!
